About Helen de Carles and Robin Burdfield

We moved to West Blackdown Cottage 2002 with our 3 children. Our home dates back to the late 18th century, and nestles on the edge of Dartmoor near the small village of Brentor. On our doorstep are the wilds of Dartmoor National Park, the well-known and much photographed church of St. Michaels on Brent tor, and the bustling market town of Tavistock, with its many attractions. We love welcoming our guests and doing all we can to help them enjoy their stay here. We are close to the premises most of the time to attend to any needs or problems. We look forward to welcoming you.

Helen de Carles and Robin Burdfield purchased this cottage in 1998

Wonderful and quiet

  • 5 of 5

I’m always a little sceptical about reviews that make something sound perfect. However, in this instance the reviews are 100% correct.

The cottage is lovely and well equipped and the location makes it so quiet and this makes for a restful holiday. The view from the front door is the moor, what a wonderful backdrop.

The owners are very friendly but don’t intrude and it’s so nice to see cows wandering around.

We spent 2 days exploring Cornwall, 1 in Somerset and the other days in Devon including 1 in and around Dartmoor and so lucky with the weather.

Would love to go back to the cottage, it’s a home from home.

Perfect For Exploring Dartmoor

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this cosy cottage with views of the moors and Brent Tor. Very friendly owners and overall a very nice stay. The only complaint being that a week is not long enough here. The cottage is good for walkers and for touring around the area.

Lovely cottage in a peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

Despite some changeable weather, we had a lovely stay. Such a peaceful location on the edge of Dartmoor, giving us easy access for walking. We also enjoyed meeting the locals, (Sheep, Cows and Ponies).

The cottage is well supplied with everything we needed. We would certainly consider staying again in the future.

Perfect New Year's getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place to get away from the pace and stress of London for the new year break. My girlfriend and I drove down from London on New Year's Eve and although the roads were dark and we did mistake another cottage for this one, once we had arrived we knew we had booked the right accommodation for our long weekend.

The cottage was the perfect size for the two of us and could comfortably fit a small family. The bed was huge and very comfortable and warmed up nicely on those cold winter nights. The bathroom is reached via the bedroom and we had no problems at all. The kitchen also comes fully fitted, with glassware, cookware and utensils.

In the living room, there is a TV and DVD player with a selection of DVDs and a small choice of puzzles and board games, which are perfect for couples and families as well as some books.

One thing I would advise is to bring slippers as the living room and kitchen floors are stone so do get cold in the winter.

The location of the cottage was extremely practical, with the main road from Tavistock to Okehampton close by. The cottage sits on its own is totally peaceful. Animals do come and go as mentioned in the listing. It is also a great location to drive or walk further into the park. However, a lot of the walks mentioned on the internet do fall further south and east of the cottage. This should not be much of a problem if one has a car.

We spent a day and a half walking the moors and as inexperienced walkers, we were lucky to have a wonderful day of sunshine and clear skies to tackle one of the easier walks from Princetown. We also took a day trip to Cornwall, with Land's End a two hour drive away, on another gloriously sunny day and this is also a perfect option for those who wish to see a different type of beauty on their trip.

The hosts, Helen and Robin, were friendly but not intrusive. The welcome pack of biscuits were much appreciated. Finally, my girlfriend and I must thank them once again for helping us to jump start our car after a particularly cold night.

I would highly recommend anyone thinking of a break in this part of the country to seriously consider this listing. It is a cosy retreat in acres of space. Again, the perfect getaway for two city dwellers to escape from it all.

HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

  • 5 of 5

A gorgeous location on the southern edge of stunning Dartmoor. Perfect accommodations, bright and exceedingly comfortable, right down to one the most superlative mattresses I've ever slept on. Easy day trips to ancient market towns in Devon and spectacular hikes on the Cornish coast. What more could a traveler ask for?
