About Sarah McBride
Simon and I bought the land and built the house finally moving in spring 2010. We lived there all year round until the call of our first grandson lead us to make the decision to spend part of the year in England so we could be more 'hands on'. So we now rent a house in Bristol and let our guests live in our home in Italy for much of the summer months. It suits our lifestyle well and means we happily enjoy the two different ways of life. Nothing gives us more pleasure than to know our guests are as happy in Casa Sillara as we are.
Sarah McBride purchased this House in 2005
Why Sarah McBride chose Bagnone
Simon is a freelance photographer and has spent much time in Italy photographing houses and gardens for a number of books and magazines. He found Lunigiana was a wonderful mix of mountains, rivers, woods plus the proximity of the Mediterranean coast which was why we came to this are for somewhere to buy.
What makes this House unique
The house is very quiet and private with far-reaching views of the mountains and yet it has easy access not only to local amenities but also the autostrada, railway and four airports within reasonable disdance

Super September Stay
The house was very well equipped with lovely view, pool and accommodation. Instructions given by the owner were excellent for our travel and plenty of useful information in the blue book for suggestions for places to visit and to eat.
All in all we had a lovely time and can recommend this property wholeheartedly.
Thank you for your review, I am delighted you enjoyed your stay
This house was a lovely house with beautiful views. Unfortunately we found the bedrooms without air conditioning too warm at night, it states in the details that there are dyson coolers but these are just dyson fans which push the warm air around. I did email the owners about this and they replied stating that they are hoping to put air conditioning in at some point. We had a couple of delicious dinners in La Torre.
Excellent location, amenities and property. The local villages of Bagnone, Villafranca and the Castle are a joy to explore. Very peaceful, very restful and a perfect location for a family holiday. Simon and Sarah make excellent hosts and gave us great tips on what to do. Their suggestions on local restaurants were spot on.
We definitely hope to get back one day.
Lovely villa in a beautiful, tranquil location.
We had a lovely week in this beautiful villa. It is spacious and well maintained with everything we needed. The pool is spotlessly clean in amongst the vast gardens and was cared for during the week by the very helpful Ana. We enjoyed meals on the terrace every day. It is very tempting to return next year.
I don't think I've ever felt so relaxed
We spent a glorious two weeks at this lovely house and used it as a base to explore Tuscany. We visited Pisa, Pontremoli, La Spezia and the Cinque Terre. The house really is as wonderful as all the reviews suggest. Very clean and well maintained. The mountain views are spectacular. The weather was glorious during our stay but we did get to witness an electric storm in the distance over the mountains one night which was magical. The house is really well equipped but as other reviewers have said the pool really is the highlight and none of us could wait to dive in as soon as we got back from a day out. We didn't get to see much of the local wildlife other than one fallow deer who jumped out of the road as we drove down towards the castle at Malgrate. Certainly no wild boar other than on our plate in a couple of the local restaurants. There is a folder that Simon and Sarah leave in the house which is a mine of useful information. Our favourite meal out was definitely Thursday night grill night at the Gavarini restaurant which is only a five minute drive away and we'd recommend that to anyone. Although we did stay in a few evenings, cooking dinner ourselves and eating out on the terrace and watching the sunset over the mountains with a glass of wine. Having Dave on hand to help us book restaurants and give us the benefit of his local knowledge was a real bonus. We all came away saying that we'd never before felt so relaxed as we did during our two weeks at this house. Dave, Debbie, Amy, Jack and Tom - Leigh on Sea, Essex
That is a lovely review and we're so pleased you enjoyed yourselves so much. I'm suprised you didn't see the wild boar making mischief at the bottom of the land but have to say secretly rather pleased!
Thank you for your kind words
We just got back and if I’m honest it’s the first holiday that I’ve been on for many years where I wasn’t gagging to get back to work after the first 7 days. I actually needed another 7!
We loved the home! It was beautiful and in such a stunning piece of countryside. The only downside was that it was like Chinese torture every night trying to get the kids out of the pool.
Lisa’s parents stayed in a local hotel but were so impressed came to spend most days with us by the pool. They also loved the home. We ended up eating twice at the restaurant at the bottom of the hill by the Castle that Sarah booked us into. It was so rustic, the food and local wine was terrirfic and we loved eating there so we went back!
Dave was super helpful and on his recommendation we spent the day at Lericci on the coast without the kids! Lisa’s parents took care of them for the day.
Needless to say, we intend to return next year and will probably bring the in-laws. They can stay in the 3rd en-suite bedroom downstairs, which is pretty much self-contained and very private.
We kept a watch out for the wild boar and were disappointed only to hear and not see them but maybe next time round.
I can't recommend this home enough - staying in, which we did or going out - it's the perfect base! It has everything and we treated it like a home from home.
Thank you Mark for a great review, you would certainly be very welcome to visit our house again and I'm sure we could lay on some wildlife for you!
There are many different beaches to choose on the Mediterranean coast of Tuscany and Liguria which is about 30mins away. Swimming is good in clear, clean water. Many beaches have bars and restaurants. Boat trips are available to visit the delightful sea front towns of the Cinqueterra. All from 30 - 45 mins by car.
Airports of Pisa and Genova are both just over an hour away. Milan about 2 1/2hrs
There are express trains to Florence and Rome from nearby Aulla or local trains to Florence, Parma, Lucca etc from Villafranca which is 10mins away.
The autostrada system is also convenient with an exit at Aulla and Pontremoli just 15 - 20mins to the house.
Bagnone a charming medieval town is 20 mins by foot or 5 mins by car.
Pontremoli with its beautiful cathedral and castle 15 mins by car.
Parma, Lucca Pisa Genova are all near for a day trip, while the many empty roads into the Apuan mountains can afford delightful days out.
There is information on the many places of interest, events and good local restaurants in the house and our local representative will be available to help guide and answer any questions at the time of the visit
