About Simon McBride

Simon and I bought the land and built the house finally moving in spring 2010. We lived there all year round until the call of our first grandson lead us to make the decision to spend part of the year in England so we could be more 'hands on'. So we now rent a house in Bath and let our guests live in our home in Italy for much of the summer months. It suits our lifestyle well and means we happily enjoy the two different ways of life. Nothing gives us more pleasure than to know our guests are as happy in casa Sillara as we are.

Simon McBride purchased this house in 2005

Why Simon McBride chose Massa Carrara

Simon is a freelance photographer and has spent much time in Italy photographing houses and gardens for a number of books and magazines. He found Lunigiana was a wonderful mix of mountains, rivers, woods plus the proximity of the Mediterranean coast which was why we came to this are for somewhere to buy.

What makes this house unique

The house is very quiet and private with far-reaching views of the mountains and yet it has easy access not only to local amenities but also the autostra, railway and four airports within reasonable disdance

Wonderful property - highly recommended!

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a week at Casa Sillara and wow...what a fabulous house! This is the first time in many years that we've rented a property and I'm glad to say we definitely chose the right place for our family. The whole house has been very well thought out, nicely furnished and was very clean on arrival. A nice touch was leaving us some beers and a bottle of prosecco for our arrival.

The kitchen is fully equipped a with everything you could want. We all loved the pool and the great loungers... so much so we found it hard to tear ourselves away from it! There's plenty of places to explore locally and you're also not too far away from Lucca and Pisa.

For a true, authentic italian experience ask to be booked into the local restaurant, the owner's daughter speaks good english and helped us make the right meal choices (don't expect a menu) - wonderful food and reasonably priced. David and his wife Ana are there for any emergencies and were a great source of information. Great communication with Sarah the owner and all our questions were answered quickly.

Don't hesitate in booking this truly wonderful house. Thanks Sarah and we'll definitely book again in the future.

The setting of this property is simply stunning; the property itself is modern and has amazing views

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this property. The whole property was modern and really comfortable, with a glass frontage which meant views over the mountains from wherever you stood. It was like stepping into someone's home - and so had all those 'extras' that make all the difference ... like herbs and spices, and washing powder! When we tired of pizzerias (which we did, as we felt that they get a bit repetitive) there was everything we needed to cook at home. Although there was air conditioning in the main parts of the house, there wasn't any in the bedrooms - we were staying at the beginning of September but one of the bedrooms was still too hot for a comfortable night's sleep, despite there being very modern fans provided. The setting of the property was stunning. We were blown away by just how quiet it was - the noise made by the insects in the garden far exceeded any noise made by other humans. The pool was lovely, with the best sun beds ever. We drove to Lucca and to the coast, and took the train from La Spezia to Cinque Terre - all within an hour's drive. But the best time was spent at the villa, lazing around in the sun by the pool, with the mountains as a backdrop. We had one or two 'hiccups' (couldn't get the pool lights to come on, and some lights bulbs needed replacing) but a phone call to Dave always brought a prompt response - and there's a lot to be said for this! And the wifi really did work - which was very important for our teenage guests (no complaining!!) All in all - a fantastic property, and an even more fantastic setting.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. Sorry about the lights failing, something it's difficult to foresee but I know Dave will have helped you with this. We are arranging for air conditioning in the bedroom in May 2017 and this should sole the problem

Wonderfull villa in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

My wife and two teenage children stayed for a week in mid-July.The villa was very well equipped and has been designed to maximise the stunning views. If anything the pictures do not do justice to this wonderful location. On our first day we saw deer wondering through the extensive gardens and every day we heard wild boar crashing around, although we only actually saw one. The villa is very comfortable with the feel of a modern home rather than a holiday rental. Dave was very helpful and gave us some really useful tips on on restaurants in the surrounding area and where to visit on the Italian Riviera. I would love to come back one day.

Mountain Idyll

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely house for a week at the end of July after a couple of nights in Florence with our three teenage sons. What a place. The location is quiet but spectacular, the house is large, modern, beautifully designed and exceptionally well equipped - the garden is terraced as you might expect with the pool (...12m long with exciting underwater lighting) a couple of terraces down. Three large double bedrooms, each with its own bathroom - there's an outdoor table tennis table, sun / BBQ terrace with views to die for - and occasional visits from a large family of wild boar. We've stayed in a few holiday villas over the years and this one, no question - was the best.

Owner's Response: Thank you for a great review, I'm so glad our house suited you so weel. I think you had rose coloured specs when you were there as the pool was in fact 9m long and not 12m but happy you enjoyed it. Sarah

Hillside hideaway luxury

  • 5 of 5

An absolute gem of a place to relax , unwind and explore this unspoilt, beautiful area of Italy. The house is clean, bright and modern with everything you would need for a hassle free stay. The views from the terrace are " to die for" . The pool certainly did not disappoint , swimming was an absolute delight.

We were a party of three mature couples and found the house very spacious and private.

Dave and Ana are available in case of emergency, and are hot on tourist information!

Bring your phrase book when visiting local restaurants!

A wonderful time was had by all .

What an incredible place to stay. Absolute paradise for us, we were 4 people staying here for one week, and if you are looking for a Villa in an idyllic setting this is the perfect place. It is an extremely comfortable home with all the necessary modern amenities. Fabulous views, fantastic pool and close to the charming village of Bagnone. Thanks to Sarah, the owner and David at the Villa for making this a perfect holiday for us. We love to come back.
