We are a retired couple who dreamt about owning the perfect weekend cottage. We think we found it in CASTLEGATE COTTAGE.
Doreen Kaberry purchased this cottage in 2013
Situated in CASTLEGATE Helmsley just minutes away from the Market Square - Shop and Restaurants.
The perfect cottage in the perfect market town. Never been to North Yorkshire before so had no idea what to expect but both the cottage and the area were amazing. No expense has been spared to make the cottage smart and comfortable, the king size bed is like floating on air. The garden is so pretty that we often ate in it on a night which is easy as there are great deli's in Helmsley We have already booked for an Autumn break. Bob and Chris -Nottingham UK
Beautiful, comfortable, stylish, beams, candles, garden, what else can we say
We'll be back soon Mr and Mrs Perry - Manchester
An Amazingly comfortable base for our walking holiday in North Yorkshire, so nice to come back to style and comfort rather than basic. Lots of great eating places in Helmsley so don't even have to cook. A sun trap garden area to sit and read in too. Gerry and Claire - London
Helmsley was recommended to us by friends and we struck lucky by finding this gorgeous cottage first visit.Tom and Pat Lee UK
We were in Helmsley on a very wet Autumn week-end so it was so lovely after walking to come back to a warm, well appointed cottage. Esy to eat in too as nearby at the entrance to the Castle is Auntie Anne's bakery where everything is home made,we became addicted to the Steak pies and took some home to feed the freezer. Also, walking in the grounds of Duncombe Park is a joy, even in the rain! We will be back. Dave and Chris Bond - Leeds.
We spent three nights in this beautiful cottage and cannot say how impressed we were! It was beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean, with everything you could wish for and even what you hadn't even thought of. The cottage has lots of character and is ideally placed in the village.
Helmsley is a lovely place - atmospheric, with a good selection of shops, places to eat and drink, and even a market on Fridays. It's well placed for walking in the countryside - there's a circular walk, which takes in Rievaulx, and is well worth doing.
Doreen was particularly thoughtful in offering us alternative dates when the weather forecast wasn't too good. As it turned out, the weather was better than expected and the trip was perfect.
We would highly recommend 34 Castlegate.

We have stayed in this property now for 3 years in a row and love the place. You can sit out in the lovely garden and relax in the sunshine or visit the local shops. Simple Helmsley is such a lovely place to stay. The cottage itself is perfectly clean and always has everything you need, Doreen really thinks of everything. One thing personally I like is cleaning products which not every place we have stayed in supplies. It's nice just to be able to have a wipe around before you leave. Helmsley is a good central location and we always tend to visit Scarborough which is only 30 miles away. As far as eating goes, Scotts Fish & Chips in Helmsley never disappoints. We also had a lovely take away from Gepetto's Italian Restaurant as the restaurant was fully booked up. The Sugared Butterfly Cafe in the Market Place also does a lovely breakfast should you like one and a great selection of home made cakes...yum! No doubt we will definitely be back there again next year.
What a picture-perfect, cosy cottage, it exceeded all expectations. Helmsley is a real gem and number 34 was the perfect base to explore from. We looked forward to coming home every day and we've already recommended it to friends and family. The cottage is very well proportioned. Even though it is a 1 bedroomed cottage, it is light, airy and very spacious with a lovely garden. It is very well equipped, the owners have thought of everything (including an excellent selection of DVDs for a rainy afternoon in!).
We will definitely be returning, it was magical.
What a delightful find this lovely cottage is. Situated right on one of Helmsley's quaint streets running alongside the village stream and only 2 minutes walk to the log fired pubs and quality restaurants. There's everything you need from parking to wi-Fi and a lovely private sunny garden for the summer months. The cottage is within a stones throw of Helmsley castle and numerous local rambles or longer country walks around the Dunscombe Estate. There are cafe bars and Barrie's if you don't want to leave the market town as well. Whilst there are plenty of places to visit within a short drive... Malton, Pickering, Castle Howard.. we stayed at the cottage itself sometimes for the entire day before walking up to Helmsley's famous outdoor swimming pool!! So quaint.
