About Sarah Burgess

The Burgess family have owned the property since 2006 and have put a lot of time and care into renovating it to make a lovely family home and business. We hope that you will love the house and area as much as we do.

We would love to share our knowledge of the surrounding area with you and hope to be able to make your stay something memorable.

Why Sarah Burgess chose Hounoux

When we first moved into the property we couldn't believe how peaceful it was, having come from a busy city it was amazing to be able sit outside with a glass of wine surrounded by practical silence - only interrupted occasionally by some birdsong! We feel that Domaine de la Barre gives you the best of both worlds, it offers peace and tranquillity whilst being within easy reach of so many interesting and lovely sites.

What makes this cottage unique

The country side surrounding the property is beautiful, with vines and sunflowers surrounding us, all our guests feel completely relaxed here. Spend the day exploring then come back here and relax by the pool or read a book on your terrace whilst watching the sun go down. Domaine de la barre gives you the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind and enjoy the beautiful French countryside.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lovely location, with fantastic pool area. Lots of great things to see and do nearby, would definitely recommend.

Very friendly family, made to feel very welcome. Lovely accommodation in a lovely setting. Many relaxing days spent by the pool and we loved Carcassonne and Mirepoix. We were staying during the medieval festival at Mirepoix which was fantastic.

A perfect spot for a relaxing holiday surrounded by beautiful countryside!

  • 5 of 5

Domaine de la Barre was just wonderful! The owners, Sarah and Kevin were very discreet giving us our privacy and yet extremely friendly and helpful when asked for any information. The facilities were immaculate, all the equipment within the apartment was easy to use and in excellent condition. The outside patio area was a very relaxing place to enjoy a glass of wine, whilst the large and well maintained pool was the perfect place to cool down. The covered area next to the pool was ideal to lie back on a comfortable sun lounger and indulge in a good book away from the midday sun. We also loved cooking in the outdoor kitchen, the BBQ was very impressive!

The Languedoc region has plenty of fantastic places to visit within easy driving range of the property, Carcassonne Cite being our favourite closely followed by a stunning drive through the Pyrenees starting at Ax Les Thermes and winding our way through the mountains back to Domaine de la Barre. The market at Mirepoix was also brilliant. For anyone who has read the Kate Mosse books then a visit to Rennes les Chateau is must, we loved it there! I will be recommending Domaine de la Barre to my friends and family, thank you Sarah and Kevin for ensuring our holiday was just great!

Perfect gite, perfect hosts, perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fabulous 2 week holiday at Domaine de la Barre. The property was super in every way and we are very picky holidaymakers! The gite is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need and more. There is a beautiful view from the large terrace where you can eat, relax and watch the night sky and the added benefit of the summer kitchen is a real asset. The pool is stunning and is exactly as it looks in the pictures.

The gite is quiet and rural with the gorgeous town of Mirepoix only 20 minutes away which has a fantastic market and cafes and restaurants for people watching. During our stay we cycled down the Canal du Midi, kayaked on the Aude, visited Carcassonne, Narbonne, Limoux, Rennes les Chateau, Rennes les Bains and swam in the Mediterranean and lots of rivers and lakes not to mention a stunning day and firework display in Collioure near Spain. There are still lots of places that we never got to see such as the Pyrenees and other historical sites. Our children aged 14 and 11 were never bored and loved the area as much as us.

Sarah, Kevin and the boys are wonderful hosts. As others have said, they are perfectly discreet but there if you need them and have some top tips if you ask. The added bonus of enjoying some home grown peppers, beetroot and cucumbers was utterly delicious.

We cannot recommend this little spot of paradise more highly. This is a gem of a property in a gem of an area of France.

Peaceful and relaxing with ideal location

  • 5 of 5

We spent an enjoyable late April break here and can highly recommend the gite as a place to stay and as a location for touring the area.

Everything about the site is as described … a lovely balcony area for relaxing / sunbathing / BBQing. A fully equipped kitchen, good shower room, comfortable bedrooms and a living area if you are spending the evening indoors. All modern and spotlessly clean.

The pool area looks fabulous and although open in late April only our brave teenagers took the plunge. We can only imagine how wonderful it is when everything has warmed up. There’s plenty of shade by the pool too for those hot days.

Domaine De La Barre is in a great location. We came into Toulouse via Easyjet and that’s about 75 mins in the car via the not expensive toll motorway. As we flew in with only so much luggage allowed, it was good to see little extras like picnic blanket and cool bag in the gite.

It's not far to so many places you’ll want to visit like Mirepoix, Carcassonne and Montsegur. You can even jump on the railway at Bram if you want to avoid car park hassles at Carcassone.

Completely chilled out for two weeks

  • 5 of 5

This is the first time we have written a review, but having stayed in many properties in lots of varied locations we found the Gite to be exceptional. We would recommend it to anybody visiting this web page.

The Gite is as advertised and well finished and all necessary amenities have been catered for. We are two ancients and enjoyed the peace, but the property is also well suited for a young family with children. The pool is large, clean and in excellent condition. The view from the terrace is wonderful and we enjoyed many al fresco meals.

Although set in a rural location there are plenty of places to visit and things to do. As you would expect in France restaurants abound. Mirepoix the nearest town and has a good supermarket but definitely warrants a visit in it's own right. We were lucky enough to see the Tour de France go through the town - a great experience.

Sarah and Kevin are discreet hosts, but when asked have an extensive knowledge of the area and give helpful tips and advice.

All in all a great holiday.

Relaxing Gite with wonderful views in quiet locale

  • 5 of 5

The gite is beautifully situated in a very quiet area of rural Aude. A short drive from the old towns of Fanjeaux and Mirepoix it is only 30 minutes from Carcassonne airport. The Gite is set apart from the owners house, the outdoor space providing superb open views across the rolling countryside. Inside the modern facilities were clean and well kept. As well as the TV (UK channels) a supply of DVDs and games were on hand (but not required).

The owners are great hosts, discrete but helpful when needed and we had as much privacy as needed, we didn't take up the chance to use the large al-fresco entertaining area with it's Pizza oven and barbeque, but we did 'borrow' Tinkie the cat for some extra company.

It's about 15 minutes to drive to Mirepoix which aside from being an historic medieval town has some nice places to sit and eat or drink. The folder in the cottage has some other great suggestions which are well worth looking out for. The canal du midi area is about 20 minutes to the North and only slightly further afield to the South are the Pyrenees.

We hope to go back to soon to explore further.

Great gite in a lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely gite in a great rural setting. The terrace is a great spot to eat or relax on the loungers and if it gets too hot the summer kitchen offers some welcome shade to enjoy the produce from the local markets. The pool is warm (unlike some gites we've stayed in) so was well used and the poolside shelter was useful on the hotter days, particularly for our boys. The nearest bakery was only 10 minutes away or you can arrange home delivery 3 times a week through Sarah! As others have said there is a lot to explore in the area, our boys really enjoyed the old Cite at Carcassone and the hot thermal pool in Rennes-les-Bains. To anyone thinking of staying here it offers great value for money, Sarah and Kevin are excellent hosts - discreet, friendly and always there if you need help or advice.

Map

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

The Mediterranean coast is within an hours drive away. Other beaches include Valras plage, Leucate plage, Argeles plus many more depending on what you are looking for. For fish lovers out there the seafood is excellent at the coast.

Travel:

Carcassonne airport is just 25 minutes drive away, you have Toulouse airport just an hour away and both Perpignan and Beziers within easy access.

Distances:

Carcassonne is just 25 minutes drive away. The lovely medieval town of Mirepoix is only 15 minutes away while Limoux is 20 minutes drive. The Mediterranean coast is just an hour away.

Further Details:

There are two small villages just 10 minutes drive from the property which provide all the basic amenities including, a shop, a bakers, a cafe , a pharmacy and a restaurant. The nearest supermarket is in Mirepoix, you will also find banks and other shops here. Limoux, Carcassonne and Castelnaudry all have excellent shopping facilities as well.

Fresh bread and croissants are delivered three times a week by our local baker.

Local attractions and places to visit:

We believe the property is ideally located as we're just an hour from the coast, an hour from the pyrenees and an hour from Toulouse. The change in scenery within a very short distance is spectacular from alpine chalets to coastal resorts to the beautiful wine regions of the Minervois. There is something on offer for everyone whether you're fascinated by the history of the region and the many incredible Cathar castles within easy distance or you prefer a more action packed holiday. You can explore the region on the bikes we have for hire or spend a day canoeing down the local rivers. We have a couple of good equestrian centers nearby that can offer excellent days out exploring the area. You can go weight boarding on a local lake or explore the trees on zip wires and ropes - the list is endless!

For those wanting a slightly slower pace of life there are some truly lovely villages nearby that really immerse you into the lovely laid back French way of life. Several of the villages have natural springs running through them so you can pamper yourself at a local spa - highly recommended!

A trip here would not be complete without visiting the stunning old city at Carcassonne, steeped in history you can imagine how they lived all those hundreds of years ago. If like me you're a fan of the Kate Mosse series of books based on the area then a trip here is even more of a must. During July and August they put on jousting contests which a well worth a visit especially if you've got kids.

Heading towards Foix and beyond you've got a handful of caves that are fascinating especially if you consider the the Cathars hid in many of them all those hundreds of years ago to avoid persecution.

No visit to France would be complete with out a visit to a market, one of our favourites is Mirepoix but there are many to choose from and during July and August there are also several night markets in local villages which make for a really great evening out.

We are sure that you would have a wonderful time here as we believe this region offers something for everyone and a recurring comment from our guests has always been ' we didn't have enough time!'
