About Ruth Quilter
Richard and I live in the Midlands, but have always loved the sea and Devon in particular. We have visited South Hams every year and never tire of this part of the world.
Ruth Quilter purchased this Apartment in 2012
Why Ruth Quilter chose Stoke Fleming
We have been visiting this beautiful area of Devon since we first met and have enjoyed so many great holidays with our son, family and friends. Over the years we have spent days on the local beaches, ridden on the steam train, enjoyed ferry trips and walks. We have also eaten our share of pasties, teas and restaurant meals! So finally we have bought Driftwood, our cosy apartment and are thrilled with it. There is so much to see and do in this area and if you are a water baby you will enjoy the fabulous sea and beaches. Walkers will love walking the coastal path and the rural walkways with great views. And on days when the weather isn't so good, you can visit Stately Homes, catch the bus to the local towns such as Totnes, go to the cinema in Dartmouth, Kingsbridge or Plymouth.
What makes this Apartment unique
Driftwood is ideally situated, tucked away from the coastal road, but a minute from the bus stop or local shop. We are pleased to have a secluded garden where we can sit and read or eat a meal but if we want to go out there is the local pub which serves food or the local restaurant which has proved very popular with our guests. The restaurant on the beach, 10 minutes away, is a great place to eat and enjoy sea views or you can catch the bus to Dartmouth or go west along the coastal road where there are many beaches and villages to visit.

Great apartment, location and holiday
We had such a good holiday in Devon helped by a comfortable, welcoming apartment and good weather. Driftwood provided an excellent base and so easy to get to Dartmouth and other wonderful places nearby. We ate out on some days and enjoyed eating in Driftwood on other evenings where we relaxed so easily. All in all a great holiday and so pleased we stayed in Ruth and Richard's bijou holiday residence. Not our first visit and definitely not the last. Thank you.
We are so pleased you had a good holiday and enjoyed staying at Driftwood. Your combination of eating out at some of the local eateries and cooking at Driftwood works really well and we often do the same. One of the restaurants we have visited recently is Rockfish which is down on the seafront at Dartmouth. The fish is so fresh and it is a treat to eat really good fish and chips, so maybe try it ( they do offer vegetarian options as well).
The area always has something to offer whatever the weather so we would be delighted if you return,
best wishes, Ruth
Lovely property. Central to where we wanted to be, bright, sunny, warm and clean
Parking wasn't directly outside the property but I have come to expect this in Devon and Cornwall. Parking was easy to find and we parked outside to unload.
The directions to the property, map of where to park and communication from Ruth was fantastic.
We did decide to eat in most evenings although the pub up the road has fantastic pies on pie night (weds).
We would have liked a potato masher. Weird I know!
Heating was brilliant, the hot water was great. Kitchen is bijoux but fully functioning.
Couldn't have asked for me. Except Wifi :)
If you are happy to be completely cut off this in the property for you but with no mobile phone signal or WiFi we did feel a little cut off.
As the tv signal was very intermittent, it might be an idea to consider having a dvd player and some dvds. Our children were fine most of the time as we played games with them. But for us to have a break I would have liked some DVDs or WiFi so they could watch a film.
But we still had a great time.
Hello Kara, thanks for taking the time to write a review. I am pleased you had a good time and enjoyed staying at Driftwood. We will take on board your suggestions.
I think mobile signal depends on provider as I get a signal with O2 and others guests can access Wifi with FON. There are also lots of places - local pub, Venus cafe, local libraries - where Wifi is free and accessible. However we do plan to set up Wifi for next season.
Glad you enjoyed the local area and hope you will return.
best wishes, Ruth
A nice little bolt-hole
A very pleasant property in a convenient location near to Dartmouth, comfortable and well fitted out.
Parking is a hundred yards uphill, which is a bit of a pest, but that seems to be common for most in-town properties in this area and many seem much more inconvenient. We never had any bother.
Easy to reach any of the local sites/villages/towns once you are used to the narrow roads, plus the Kingsbridge-Dartmouth (and beyond) bus passes within yards every hour. Plenty of nice places to eat at reasonable prices; Wednesday pie night at the local pub is a treat.
So pleased you enjoyed your holiday here at Driftwood. We never tire of all the places to visit in the area.
We are lucky there is plenty of parking nearby. The bus is easy and makes a change from driving and the views from the top deck means you get to see more too!
Lots of guests enjoy the local pub and 'pie night' seems to be a favourite!
Thanks for looking after Driftwood.
Lovely little apartment in a peaceful setting
Loved the apartment. Very clean, tastefully decorated and well equipped. In a lovely little village with a nice old pub called the Green Dragon. The surrounding area is beautiful.
Wow, that was quick! Thanks for your lovely comments and we are pleased you liked Driftwood.
I think Autumn is a great time to visit and the colours are lovely and we still get nice days.
Glad you enjoyed Pie Night at the Green Dragon - lots more pies to choose, so we hope you'll return,
best wishes Ruth
Beautifully decorated, cosy and well equipped.
Thankyou Laura for your review. So pleased you enjoyed your stay at Driftwood.
We redecorated it in June so I'm pleased our efforts weren't in vain!!
We find it is a very relaxing apartment as it is so bright and cheerful.
We hope you will come a stay again,
best wishes, Ruth
Comfortable, cosy, bright apartment in an idyllic village location
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Driftwood. Ruth's communication was excellent, as were the directions to the apartment, and the recommendations of places/pubs to try out. Driftwood is quite a quirky home in quite a quirky area (it didn't help that we arrived after midnight!), but Ruth's directions properly conveyed its whereabouts and where to park the car. It's minutes from the well stocked village shop, and the really lovely pub, The Green Dragon, which did great food as well as nice wine. The pub has wifi (the kids were delighted!), an excellent climbing frame and a great, lawned beer garden.
Driftwood is flooded with light, and it was a pleasure to open the windows and hear the birds and the church bells. It's a short, downhill (fairly steep) walk down to Blackpool Sands, which really is a stunning, shingle beach. My boys played for hours, before we had a pit stop in the Venus cafe. We also drove down one day, parking at the beach. It cost £5 and was only 5-10 minutes drive away.
Driftwood is also a couple of miles from the Park and Ride service at Sainsburys. It cost £5 per car (or £3 after 2pm) to leave your car all day and take the bus to Dartmouth - again, this journey was only a matter of minutes long. From Dartmouth, we took a ferry to Kingswear, then the steam train to Greenhalt, to visit Greenway, Agatha Christie's home now run by the National Trust. It was a fantastic day out.
Returning to Driftwood was a pleasure - it was very clean upon arrival, with an entrance/utility area downstairs, handy for stacking boots, hanging coats and stashing buckets and spades, etc. Upstairs (the stairs are quite steep but Ruth offered a stair gate, and it was fine for us anyway), there's a small open plan kitchen and a small step up to a sunny sitting room. The 2 bedrooms are off the sitting room and are clean and comfortable. My husband cooked a Sunday lunch in the kitchen as well as other meals so the kitchen was perfectly well equipped for easy lunches, etc.
We're planning our next visit already because we enjoyed staying there so much. It's a great little place in great location. Well worth trying out.
What a very thorough review Caroline! Lots of useful information for future guests which is useful when folk are new to the area.
I am so pleased you all enjoyed your holiday and found Driftwood comfortable and sunny.
I agree the trip to Greenway is a must as the journey and setting is so beautiful. We took friends there recently and they loved it.
Information on park and ride is helpful and it is a good service.
We look forward to your return and hopefully you will be able to stay for longer next time.
Thanks for taking the time to review your stay, best wishes, Ruth
