family holiday

  • 3 of 5

cottage itself was lovely 2 spacious bedrooms 1 small, constant bad reception on telly for my teenagers, disappointed that we didn't get greeted on arrival in fact we didn't see owners at all. the fish ponds seemed empty of fish, covered in surface pond weed and very low on water my husband fished for a couple of hours and not even a bite which was a big let down as we had picked this property specifically for the fishing and had to find alternative fishing at kilkhampton which came with a charge but was well worth it we caught some beautiful fish. Swallow cottage is also very remote no pubs or shops within walking distance and the walk down to the bay is not for the faint hearted

Special interest holidays:

There is coarse fishing on the farm's Lake. Great for walkers being set amidst the Nat Trust Coombe Valley with footpath walks (under 2 miles) down to the lovely good size sandy beach at Duckpool. The farm's woodland walks. This is the renowned Coombe Valley, a favourite with walkers who are in the know. Footpath walks, particularly leading from the farm down the valley to the coast at Duckpool (Duckpool beach). Duckpool probably derives its name from church baptism in the large pool where the stream meets the beach. Stunning cliff walks, lovely sandy beaches leading all the way into Bude at low tide (when all the beaches for about 3 miles join up). Can also take the cliff walks into Bude. At Bude swim in the huge and free open air swimming pool on the main beach (probably largest in the country). Bude is a beach resort with usual amenities; also rowing up Bude Canal (boat hire) etc. Visit impressive (not expensive to visit) privately owned country house Hartland Abbey.

Coast/Beach:

5 miles to Bude beaches, North Cornwall. Under 2 miles by road and footpath to Coombe Valley Duck Pool beauty spot with sandy beach. A lovely National Trust footpath walk leading from farm, through Coombe Valley, to Duck Pool beach.

Distances:

About 3 miles into Kilkhampton village with shop and country Inns (good food). 5 miles into Bude beaches (a free open air swimming pool on the main beach-probably largest in England).

Further Details:

Enjoy walks or fishing on this traditional working farm. Wildlife is attracted to the farms ponds and woods and there is the opportunity to spot different varieties of animals and birds such as woodpeckers, kingfishers and even perhaps the occasional badger or fox. A short stroll from your holiday cottage is the ancient carp pond used by monks in the12th cent (one of the oldest such ponds in the country & featured on a T.V. programme). It is now set aside as a nature pond and there are often ducks and the occasional heron. Second pond with Coarse Fishing. Beautiful Coombe Valley so great for walkers. take the footpath/lane from the farm woods and circular walks, linking up with local footpaths. The lane leading from the farm takes one down a picturesque walk through the Coombe Valley and to the beach at Duckpool. A great favourite with ramblers and walkers. Beautiful walks along the valley with stream, leading to the stream fed ‘duck pool’ at the entrance to the beach. A pleasant walk (under 2 miles) down the country lane to duckpool beach; passing thatch cottages, a quaint tiny ford (with footbridge) and finishing at duckpool beach. Or drive instead; free parking and usually plenty of room. can walk along the cliffs or along the beach at low tide, all the way along into Bude- probably a 3 miles walk. Can enjoy the stunning cliff walks in either direction.
