Perched on a mountainside above the banks of the Azzaden River Valley in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains (at the entry to Toubkal National Park, Ouirgane area), Kasbah Africa can be reached in little over an hour from Marrakech. Offering a high degree of exclusivity Kasbah Africa has just eight stone-built suites, all with panoramic mountain and river views.
Each suite has 40 square metres of living space and is furnished with hand-crafted walnut furniture with either two large singles or a super king size bed, wood burner, Berber rugs, a sofa and lounge chairs, spacious bathroom and private roof terrace offering spectacular and panoramic views – perfect for star-gazing. Facilities include a large swimming pool and lawn, Berber tent, extensive landscaped terraced gardens with abundant fruit and olive trees, a bar, lounge and restaurant with log fires, and of course panoramic river and mountain views.
Born into a family hotel business, I'm originally from East Yorkshire and have spent my life working in the travel and hospitality business - as an adventure tour guide in Africa and Asia, a rental property owner, tour operator and hotelier. I've been lucky enough to travel all over the world but now choose to spend much of my time in Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains.
Nick Anstead purchased this hotel in 2013
Only a 3 hour low-cost flight away, Marrakech is the closest exotic African city to the UK. It is also a convenient gateway for easy access to the Atlas Mountains. After a few days in the city I am always keen to escape the bustling medina, traffic and noise. The Atlas Mountains rising above the city offer an irresistible lure. After hearing about this property in a remote valley location away from the crowds that visit the overdeveloped Imlil area I was hooked. With a scenic drive from Marrakech and with sweeping views of the Azzaden Valley against a backdrop of High Atlas peaks, the opportunity to take over Kasbah Africa was one not to be missed. This is an untouched part of the Atlas Mountains - very peaceful - with a colourful, hospitable local community of Berbers.
For those seeking escape and relaxation Kasbah Africa provides an antidote to the stresses of modern life. The Kasbah offers a wide range of local activities, day trips and tours including guided walks to nearby Berber villages, Atlas treks, Toubkal climbs, nature trails, mule treks, cooking courses, and 4×4 trips to remote mountain villages and beyond. Day trips are available to Marrakech, Ourika Valley, Agafay Desert, Tin Mal Mosque and the Ouirgane Valley. If you enjoy yoga or painting - this is the place for you!
For my birthday a group of friends treated me to a 3 day stay at Kasbah Africa....itwas the big 50 after all. We are all keen walkers but you cannot go to Marrakech and not explore it a bit first. Chaos, colour, vibrant the works. Nice to stay near the centre at Riad Africa who looked after everything we needed but we couldn't wait to get to the mountains.
Kasbah Africa was all it promised and more. Unbeknown to me my riends had rented the whole place so it was our private gettaway. Great rooms, fab food and a cold drink by the pool but it was the scenery and the walking that stole the show. Abdul the guide was knowledgable, courteous and everything was no problem. Picnics were taken with great views, tea was drunk in villages and views have burnt themselves forever into my memory.
Back at Kasbah a hot shower, good meal and comfy place to sleep and we were a very happy group and were sad to leave. We booked the whole package through Kasbah and were glad we did as all the sections; transport, accomadation and guides all connected perfectly.
Kasbah Africa offers Moroccan cookery courses and is an ideal venue for yoga holidays, honeymooners, painting, small business conferences / getaways. Walking and biking are the most popular activities.
Kasbah Africa offers a range of day walks with a choice of short self-guided trails or day walks accompanied by a local Berber guide. These can be arranged upon your arrival at Kasbah Africa.
Longer overnight or multi-day treks in the High Atlas Mountains can be arranged through our Atlas trekking base at nearby Dar Tassa.
These can include stays in traditional Berber villages inhabited by friendly local people who live a life that has changed little over hundreds of years.
Moroccan holiday packages which include Kasbah Africa, multi-centre Morocco holidays and adventure tours can be arranged through our tour company, Specialist Morocco.
Combine Kasbah Africa with Riad Africa or Maison Africa in Marrakech for a wonderful two-centre holiday. Enquire direct for details.
The nearest beaches are either Agadir or Essaouira on the Atlantic Coast (4-5 hours driving).
The 64 km drive normally takes around 70 minutes from Marrakech. The first part of the journey follows a generally straight road (R203) to the town of Tahanoute before slowly winding up through the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Pass through the lively Berber town of Asni and continue on the R203 road which leads to the Tizi n’Test Pass and Taroudant. At Marigha turn left onto a dirt / gravel road (accessible to hire cars). We arrange private transfers.
