About Alex Di Re
My name is Alex Di Re, originally Italian but living in the UK since 35 years, in London and Bournemouth now. I am an Account Manager for a software company and recently purchased this house as a retirement "escape route". I had the house refurbished in 2013 to a high specification so discerning people can enjoy a wonderful stay. I visit twice a year with my family to eat like a king and bathe in the slow pace of this little known corner of Italy. I have two kids, 16 and 13 yrs of age who love it there...why wouldn't they; you can buy pizza by the metre, the ice cream is awesome, the sea is like a swimming pool! My favourite non-beachy places nearby are Lecce, Otranto and the cathedral in Galantina (don't google it, just go there, trust me, you will be amazed..Unesco thinks so too).
Alex Di Re purchased this House in 2013
Why Alex Di Re chose Bagnolo del Salento
I was on holiday in Bagnolo in 2012 and fell in love with the simplicity of the village, the beauty of the area and the genuine, discreet friendliness of the people which is known across Italy. I am not religious but it's humbling to see people cross themselves as they walk or drive past the Church. Salento is a large region with the very touristy Brindisi and Bari areas already well known at a European level. Personally I prefer the area south of Lecce (a baroque gem) where my house is because the coast is more varied compared to the rather boring beaches further north. I love how in a maximum of 25 minutes you can drive to a different amazing beach every day! In July and August all the villages compete to offer religious and food festivals, there is something to do every evening.
What makes this House unique
The house is rather unique with high vaulted ceilings and everything is brand new and of good quality. It's right in the pedestrian centre and remarkable because it is adjacent to the church, the roof terrace is a special place to sit with an aperitif. Of course the bells may wake some individuals but you can always doze off again if that happens. You'll be amazed how in a few days you will be living in sync with them and village life, truly and deeply relaxing. In the local shops you can buy fresh fish daily and all good quality basics. 50 yards away is the most amazing restaurant, Le Tre Forchette, OMG..I salivate just at the thought of going back! I have English speaking friends a few houses away if you need any help and I'm always available, just a phone call away.

Great place to stay
We had a wonderful week with fabulous weather. The property was perfect, hidden behind a little piazza and within a short walk of all the amenities. It was a great base for the area and the local beaches and towns were fascinating with wonderful food. We would highly recommend both the area and the property. Alex was an excellent host checking in with us to make sure all was ok. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your home.
Dear Isobel, thank you enormously for this lovely review, I'm really pleased you enjoyed your stay and thanks for the gas cooker tip!
Very best regards
We fell in love with Bagnolo from the first moment when we arrived to the main piazza. It has the magic calming atmosphere.
There is everything what you need:small supermarket, two bars, post, pasticceria with fresh delicious pastries, nice restaurant(Toto)...
It's close to the beaches.small villages,15 min. drive to Otranto and 30 min. to Lecce.
Alex's house is in the center of the village, two minutes from main piazza. It's beautiful ,clean and comfortable. The roof terrace is really nice for relaxing and evening aperitivo.
The communication with Alex was great and easy.He gave us plenty of recommendations for a nice local restaurants, beaches and places to see.
We can't wait to be back :)
Fantastic Place to Stay
We enjoyed our stay very much. The home is beautiful and we enjoyed the authentic character of this tiny town. The place has everything in it that you can want and has a generous and thoughtful layout designed for both social moments and period of thought and relaxation. Our hosts were both relaxed and attentive to our needs and I can heartily recommend it as a place to stay. As for the proximity to the bells, it was a source of some amusement!
The property is absolutely beautiful, tucked away in its own private courtyard just behind the main thoroughfare, only a few minutes walk from the shops and restaurants and yet very private. The roof terrace was our favourite spot at the end of the day, sitting with a glass of wine and literally being in the sun until it disappeared. Highly recommended.
Thank you !
Alex is as nice and welcoming as a friend who would be expecting you to 1/ Feel yourself at home and 2/Share the best of the great emotions you will get in the really authentic Bagnolo and the fantastic Puglia region (wonderful and true people, mind-blowing beaches, generous sun, great and diverse collection of villages/city and natural areas, and overwhelming food and wine quality). It all worked 100% for us. Thank you Alex and à bientôt...
Cher Stefan, merci pour ton esprit d'aventure, ton enthusiasme partage' et ton ouverture envers des nouvelles experiences et surtout merci bien pour tes gentil mots!
Bien a vous
Being Italian for a week
Staying in Alex's beautiful house in Bagnolo del Salento was a real tonic. Bagnolo itself is a tranquil, 'local's' town, where no-one speaks English but you still feel at home. And the house itself is just beautiful - an obvious labour of love to restore by someone with excellent taste. A fantastic mixture of the old and new, with all mod cons and perfectly clean. It's a great base from which to explore southern Puglia, and to 'become Italian' for a week! Such a beautiful region, with so many unspoilt places to visit - in fact . . . don't come here, you'll hate it!!
Excellent punch line, still giggling! :-) Thanks Nick, you should have been born Italian. Ciao e a prestos spero.
In 10 minutes you can be strolling through the medieval streets of Otranto, a fortified seaside town and bathing in the bay. A 15 minute drive will take you to Alimini, famous all over Italy for its miles and miles of white sandy beaches and crystal clear, unpolluted seas. 20 minutes will take you to several luxurious resorts on rocky escarpments like Santa Cesarea or Castro.
50 minute drive from Brindisi Airport; 2 hours from Bari Airport. You will need a car; all major rental companies have offices at the airports. Depending on the cost of flights, you could also fly to Napoli and drive cross country, 4 hours.
Lecce: 30 minutes away. An absolute treasure Baroque town known as "The Florence of the South"
Otranto: 15 minutes away. A medieval fortified seaside town.
Maglie: 5 minutes away. A chic little town with fancy shops. Great place for an evening aperitivo.
Santa Cesarea Terme: impressive rocky seaside resort
Castro Marina: relaxing rocky seaside resort
Bagnolo is a simple working village in the fertile Salento area of Puglia; benefitting from an artisan patisserie/ ice-cream parlour, a very excellent restaurant, pizzerias, simple bars, a fishmonger, butcher, two supermarkets and a pharmacy.
The quality and price of the food is astounding wherever you go. During July and August concerts, religious, cultural and food festivals take place every evening across the region. When you come home, relax al fresco on the terrace below the church steeple.
