This is an old stone cottage which has been recently renovated to a high standard, introducing lots of 20th century home comforts whilst retaining the character of an old cottage. It is located at the end of the village in a peaceful location with magnificent views of the Truyere Valley below.
Gîte Rita accommodates up to four people with two double bedrooms and two bathrooms. Renovated to a high standard and with over 100 m2 of living space, this spacious gîte has been restored maintaining the original features of the property while adding a modern feel. It also features a garden with barbecue and views of the surrounding Truyère Valley.
I have used the greenest materials and techniques to renovate the property to reduce the environmental impact of your holiday to a minimum. I have sourced materials locally and renovated the gîte with care to bring the natural beauty of the building back to life as well as adding 21st-century home comforts, including:
Solar panels provide hot water
Natural wool insulation and thick stone walls help to keep the rooms cool in summer and warm in winter
Electrical fan oven
Large gas ceramic hob with five burners
Fridge & freezer
Flat screen TV with surround sound speaker system
These are just a few of the items included in your rental.
It is important to me that you enjoy your stay here and I will do everything I can to make this happen. Please do not hesitate to contact me If you have any special requirements - just send me an email or give me a call and I will try to arrange for them to be ready for your arrival.
Hello, my name is Chris, I have been living in Valon, Lacroix Barrez, Aveyron for the past 5 years. I am originally from England but moved to France for a change of lifestyle. After working as a product designer in London for 12 years I now run my gite and gallery. I make furniture, paintings, photographs and sculptures and then sell pottery and jewellery from other local artists. I also renovate properties which i have a passion for. I love travelling, meeting new people and creating things.
chris taylor purchased this cottage in 2009
I fell in love with this property from the moment I drove down the winding road, and saw the village from the distance, perched on the top of the hill, surrounded by forest and the chateau sitting in the centre. it was January and pouring with rain, but his made no difference.
The house was "very french" shall we say and the thought of owning 50 acres of land too was daunting, but I could see the potential.
I have spent the last 5 years working on it and now have two fantastic gites both for 4 people and an art gallery
This location is perfect for those that just want to get away and relax, its very quiet all year around, fantastic walks on your door step, loads of activities nearby, mountain biking, canoeing, etc. There is a great leisure lake where you can swim (lifeguard in the the summer).
The area holds the most number of "plus beaux villages de France" of any department and there is great choice of restaurants and local markets.
Also the roads are clear even in summer so its pleasant to drive around here.
Rustic and Civilized ( Maia USA)
This was the perfect place to stay. If I could live there I would. After how busy Paris was, the secluded area of Lacroix-Barrez was magical. This village is out of a story book, and if you are interested in historical sites this area is full of them. We took many day trips and never had trouble finding our way. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat from the ordinary.
Valon and the surrounding area, is an absolute jewel (Tim UK)
Fantastic position, right at the top of this stunningly attractive hilltop village. The views from the gite, over the adjacent valley and countryside, are truly out of this world.
The owner is both welcoming and courteous, nothing being too much trouble.
Enjoy your stay in this magical location!
Place like a charm! ( Jermey France)
The place is very nice. rooms are big, modern, clean, silent. you can do barbecue, hiking, leisure, etc.
you won't be disappointed, oh no!
Chris' cottage in the secluded village of Vallon was absolutely enchanting; cute stone house with timber floors, exposed beams, fireplace and peaceful garden. On top of that, the cottage has a solar-powered hot water system, electric supplementary heating, dishwasher, two relaxing areas each with their own tv and music system and a modern, well-equipped kitchen. And to top it all, Chris left a lovely bottle of red wine to enjoy in front of the fire.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Chris' cottage and under the spell of this tranquil setting, have fallen in love with this untamed area of France. Of course, the tumbled-down medieval castle not more than 50 meters from the front door adds to this wonderfully romantic setting.
This gite has been very carefully and thoughtfully refurbished to provide excellent, comfortable accommodation. The views are outstanding and Chris was a perfect host, helpful and generous, he really helped us settle in quickly and make the most of our short break.
.Definitely a place to return to, a real hideaway, peace and calm, amazing scenery. Well done Chris.
This is a beautiful and special place, but the property needs a little more care and cleaning up (cobwebs are everywhere), maybe because the wire-netting is in need of repair. There is not much to do once you've visited the castle but that's not why should go to Chateau de Vilon. Just enjoy the tranquility of this little hilltop village. Bikers should know that there are some great climbs around, bring at least a 39-27.
Spent a wonderful couple of weeks in Valon, courtesy of the generous hospitality of Chris. We particularly enjoyed the garden, and eating out on the veranda, not to mention Chris's excellent selection of beers, juices, vegetables, jams etc. which went down very well indeed!
Besides being a characterful and scenically stunning village in and of itself, Valon is a fantastic base from which to explore the varied riches of the surrounding area. We spent much of the time using the little 'Cardalez à pied' book provided in the gite as our guide to the region’s walks, and during rambles about the local hills and towns were especially treated to some memorable wildlife encounters. Highlights included the daily sightings of red and black kites, a short-toed eagle, abundant red-backed shrikes, black redstarts, crested tits, red squirrels, deer, stoats, a slow worm, an adder and even a pine marten! Highly recommended are the markets in Mur-de-Barrez and Entraygues-sur-Truyere which (weather permitting!) are a vibrant and fascinating experience.
All in all, a fantastic stay here. Highly recommended.

We discovered the Aveyron in the summer of 2014 and immediately wanted to return to see more. We have explored this stunning area further and taken in the many spectacular views - including the one from the ultimate loo with a view! A week in Valon in this 'get away from it all' gite has exceeded our expectations. The location is even more breathtaking in reality than the pictures on the website can evoke and is a haven of peace and tranquility.
The house has been renovated tastefully, to a high standard and ticks many of the boxes for us (and more) when choosing on owners direct. The owner Chris lives on site and was there to welcome us in person together with a basket of tasty home made goodies. He is available for advice on the area and a chat but not intrusive - the perfect host.
This holiday will stay in our memories for many years to come - this gite and this area are a definite must see!
