About the property

Wigford Farmhouse and The Chalet both provide relaxing bases for the perfect beach holiday. They are booked separately, and some bigger groups like to book both. (NB Chalet photos are after farmhouse photos: keep scrolling for these, and the interiors all have a written description under the photo so that you can tell what's what. You may have to scroll down to see the description.) Each has its own private garden as well as use of the large shared play areas and large games barn. Please note use of all facilities is at guests' own risk.

15 minutes drive from surfing/barbecue/family beach at Bantham. Half hour to 'cool' Totnes. 15 minutes from Dartmoor. Close to Salcombe and Dartmouth. Walks to the River Avon start outside the door. You can even plan your walk along the river to end with a delicious lunch or home-made cream tea at local family-run garden centre. South Devon is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The South West Coast Path is just 15 minutes from Wigford and Dartmoor is a mere 15 minutes in the other direction: every day of your holiday the choice is yours!

The market town of Kingsbridge is five miles down the road, with great local food shops and a leisure centre. The immediate locality of Loddiswell boasts a pub and two shops, including a very helpful post office, a fabulous local butcher, a garden centre with a cafe selling cakes to die for and a chilli farm with cafe and shop.

If you require a supermarket grocery delivery Tesco and Waitrose do one. Sainsbury's also deliver locally.

About Anthony Johnson

Wigford Farm is in the most amazing location. Now that my children have mostly left home it's a joy to share it with holiday-makers throughout the year. Deep in the countryside and yet only a 15 minute drive to some of the most stunning beaches in the country; we can hardly believe our luck.

What makes this cottage unique

We delight in telling people how they can walk out of the front gate and follow a fairy tale path through woodland to be at the River Avon at Topsham Bridge in 10 minutes. If you've never seen a Devon river, this is something else... from sparse and clear in the summer, to a raging torrent if it's been wet for long, The Avon is ever changing; reflecting nature in her changes by the day.

On a clear night we're still amazed by the number of stars you can see...

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Pretty close to Paradise. An Enid Blyton idyll for the kids, with the tree house and trampoline. Loved the house, nothing wanted, and Ant a great recommender of beaches.

Birdsong, Babbling Brook, Blue Skies. Wonderful.”

“The three families all had a fab time. We enjoyed Salcombe and the foot paths. We came across the peacock on the walk! We visited the chilli farm, and the kids loved all the toys and the outdoor space. Facilities were excellent, and we’ll recommend family and friends!”

Lovely farmhouse, basic but characterful with everything we could ever need

  • 5 of 5

We booked wigford farmhouse along with the chalet for a family holiday with 3 generations of the family and it was perfect. The farmhouse is a lovely house, veryclean, it's basic but still with character with a lovely wood burner which kept us warm on chilly nights! Fab huge table in kitchen complete with lazy Susan! Beautiful garden with tree house, trampoline, swings and even a zip wire... the children loved it! BBQ and fire pit, on clear nights the sky was amazing, I've never seen so many stars! The chalet is lovely too! We had a wonderful fortnight, it's not posh but it doesn't claim to be, nor need to be. The only thing that could better it would be to moving it nearer the beach but the sound of the running stream more than made up for that, and Bantham really isn't far and it's a stunning beach! The owner Ant was lovely, so helpful but not imposing. In all we had a wonderful holiday and didn't want to leave, we hope to return soon 😊?

Decent Accomodation in a secluded spot

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over the new year break.

We arrived later than expected, but the house was ready for us and the beds were made, which was nice after a long drive.

Whilst I wouldn't describe the house as luxury, it was perfect for our stay, especially with 6 kids charging around. There was loads of space inside and out, the showers worked well, the beds were fine, and the price was reasonable. There is an AGA in the kitchen - nice (if a little tricky to use successfully if you've not used one!) - the cooker could do with an overhaul as one of the knobs was broken, but no big problem. There was plenty of stuff to cook and serve, and a lovely big table to fit 12 of us around.

The lounge had plenty of seating, a decent TV and a great fire (with plenty of wood ready for chopping in the barn).

The garden has a tree house, zip line and trampoline which the kids loved (especially the treehouse).

The hosts were lovely, not at all intrusive, but on hand if needed (and to check we hadn't be washed away in a torrential storm!).

Overall, if you are a large group with kids, wanting to explore the lovely South Hams area (the beaches at Bigbury, Bantham and Mothecombe are outstanding BTW) Wigmore Farm would be a great choice, and I'd imagine it's even better in the summer.

Great for multiple families or large groups

  • 3 of 5

It's quite cheap so don't expect plush. Lovely farmhouse in an isolated setting. Great comfy sitting room with log burner. Kitchen and bedrooms are very basic. Our double bed was very creaky and the water in all the showers was very slow to drain away. Owner in my opinion needs to spend some money on the property generally including the games room which is outside of the main house. Some of the rooms have a minor damp problem and there was evidence of minimal cleaning (cobwebs and dust under beds) having taken place between occupation. I am surprised that other reviews have not mentioned some of our findings. Our party did enjoy the house and if your expectations are not that high you will enjoy it too.

The Owner lives in the rear of the farmhouse..this may be off putting for some parties.

Owner's Response: So glad you all had a lovely holiday. and thank you for your feedback. It's always helpful when people tell us about things like the bolts in the bed needing some end-of-season tightening (which has now been done, along with servicing the shower drains.) We've also asked the cleaning team to keep a special eye out for cobwebs.

Wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time with our friends in the farmhouse : the place is so quiet, the view is amazing, all the games in the garden are just a dream for children (and older children), and everything you could want to find in the house is provided! I would recommand it to anyone, and I keep the address for a next holiday in England.

Great size house, well equipped and clean. Comfortable beds. Location ideal for exploring south Devo

  • 5 of 5

A great break for all 16 of us! 12 in the farm house and 2 adults, 2 children in the chalet. The children varied in age from 3-15 and there was something to entertain all of them. As the weather was particularly nice they spent a lot of time in the gardens playing football, bouncing on the trampoline and fishing for tadpoles! The games barn was used once or twice one the sun went down by the older kids although the younger children needed to be supervised in there at all times. The kitchen was well equipped and it was lovely to be able to seat us all around the table for evening meals and games. The log burner in the lounge was very welcome in the chilly evenings, although there was also additional heating throughout the house. The house was clean, comfortable and basic which meant we didn't need to be worried about the children touching things they shouldn't or breaking anything! The location proved a great base for exploring lots of the local beaches and kingsbridge itself. Hope cove was a particular favourite of ours. The chilli farm at the end of the road proved popular and we spent the morning there on our last day. Ant was very accommodating and made it clear to ask if we needed anything, which we didn't and he clearly wasn't bothered by the noise 8 children and a dog can create! Overall a very relaxing break, we are looking forward to returning.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you all had a great time. It's always great when a bunch of kids uses the play areas so enthusiastically... there seemed to be a lot of football going on a lot of the time, and, as a parent myself, I know that that gives the adults a bit more chill out time too!
