About Suzanna Fletcher

Hello, we are a British family and this is very much our home although we are working abroad at the moment and so have decided to rent out the house. We hope you will enjoy and care for it as much as we and our children do. Have fun.

Suzanna Fletcher purchased this villa in 2007

Why Suzanna Fletcher chose Lake Como

We bought the house as a ruin in 2007 having lived in Milan and fallen in love with the northern tip of lake Como. The area is lovely all year round, it is close to the delights of lake Como, the valleys and mountains, but far away enough to have absolute seclusion and peace.

What makes this villa unique

When we are at the house, which is as much as possible, we ski in the winter, boat on the lake in the summer or just enjoy the seclusion of the woods and the walks from the doorstep.

We (4 adults, 5 children) loved Villa Rustica. The house is beautiful and very well appointed; we were extremely comfortable. However, the key selling points have to be the stunning view and the tranquil setting. It's a truly lovely location. We greatly enjoyed dining outside on the terrace, amidst trees and overlooking the lake, and relaxing in the grounds.

While the house is secluded, there's lots to do if you're willing to travel a little way by car. We enjoyed Colico and it's nearby attractions; we took the ferry along Lake Como to Bellagio; and the children appreciated a trip to a treetop climbing.

We'd suggest arriving at the house with all necessary supplies (incl washing up liquid / dishwasher tablets) to avoid having to head back out to pick anything else up. It will save you time and you won't have to sacrifice time away from the views.

The house was spotlessly clean, the information provided was accurate and the owners' local representatives were helpful.

Stunning property in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Villa Rustica for 1 week in the middle of May.

We spent the entire week enjoying the local area and extensive grounds of the property which included private access to the lake (though this was a little on the steep side, but the end result was worth it). The property is stunning and lives up to it's name. Our early mornings were spent enjoying breakfast under the veranda and evenings sitting out by the lawn with a BBQ smoking away (and large glass of wine or three). We'd return here in a heartbeat (especially now we are used to the access road which was on the narrow side), but other than that it was an absolute delight and highly recommended.

We had the most wonderful holiday in this perfectly delightful house overlooking Lake Mezzola. From our very first correspondence with Suzanna and Alexis (the owners), we found them exceptionally helpful in every respect. Their team on the ground were also fantastic. the house is beautifully appointed, with everything there that one needed. you need to be fairly fit in order to enjoy the steep wooded path down to the lake, but we loved this, and felt as if we were characters in "Swallows and Amazons" . The views from the house are sensational, bbqs in the evenings overlooking the lake fabulous and just struggled to take in the beauty of it all. We would really recommend it.

A car is essential. The easiest way to reach Villa Rustica is to fly to one of the three Milan airports (Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo) and hire a car. Depending on traffic, the three airports are between a 1 ½ hr and 2 ½ hr drive from the villa, Bergamo usually being the quickest.

Bringing or hiring a Sat Nav is a good idea. You can stock up on supplies on the way at the Iperal supermarket in Piantedo.

Alternatively you can combine trains and ferries via Milan, Saronno and Como.

Albonico and Dascio are each a 20 minute walk and provide restaurants.

Shopping is a short drive away to Sorico, Gera Lario and Nuovo Olonio, all within 10km.

Further Details:

As well as enjoying the outstanding natural beauty and countryside there is lots to see and do in the surrounding area, from enjoying the delights of the local Italian cuisine to cycling, sailing, walking and winter sports.

Enjoy mountain biking from the doorstep or road biking from the top of the track, a short walk from the villa. The surrounding area is popular with cyclists, with numerous tracks and routes.

You can enjoy some fantastic walks from the villa, either by following a well marked path (Sentiero) or by exploring the hills above Albonico. A short drive and you can explore Valle dei Ratti or continue up Valchiavenna or Valtellina.

Lago Di Mezzola sits in the Pian Di Spagna nature reserve offering a haven of natural wildlife along the southern edge of the lake and the River Mera that connects Lago di Mezzola and Lago di Como. There are several other nature reserves in Valtellina a short drive away from Villa Rustica.

Lago di Mezzola has power boat speed restrictions and therefore is the ideal place to enjoy quieter water sports. Hire a boat and explore, walk twenty minutes along the roman path to Dascio and hire a canoe or take the day trip boat for a great day out.

Alternatively, head down to the town of Gera Lario which is a twenty minute drive and you can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, wake-boarding and water-ski lessons.

By car or ferry, you can visit some of the famous villas and gardens of Lake Como including Villa Carlotta on your way to lunch on the only island on Lake Como, Comacina.

There is a great variety of places to eat, drink and soak up the local Italian atmosphere. The Enoteca Portovino on the edge of the old marina in Colico is a real treat in both summer and winter. Eating at a local Agriturismo, where they tend to serve a local set menu, is an inexpensive way to try local cuisine or why not just walk from the house to Trattoria Nives in Albonico or the restaurants of Dascio.
