Maison de la Riviére is in a beautiful location with 500 meters bordering the river saison, with private access to a natural stone beach, where you can spend lazy summer days relaxing, swimming and picnicking, kayaking or you can find your own private area to fish for Salmon, Trout or Barbel. The house is perfect for families, couples or friends. As the house is elevated it commands amazing views enjoyed from the private 53m2 terrace, overlooking the pool and river, where you can enjoy al fresco dining or an apero or two. The house is well equipped with every thing you need for a holiday and to keep the children happy. Located in the gated grounds there is an undercover games area with snooker, table tennis, boule, darts. There are also swings, slide, badminton, trampoline and a football pitch. If that's not enough then they can hand feed our lovely pygmy goats and collect fresh eggs from the hens and ducks. There are games and books supplied for all ages.
Beach towels provided.
We all moved to France Bernadette Ian son Ollie and dog Tara in 2005 after having stayed with friends near here for a holiday to explore the area, we decided immediately it was the place for us, for me the beaches and for Ian & Ollie the mountains.
We rented for a year to see if we liked the area, then bought the farmhouse with a huge barn to renovate. It was hard work but worth the end result.
Bernadette Packer purchased this farmhouse in 2006
It has to be the river, Oliie and I look forward to our first swim of the year, its a competition to see who is first in the water as it can be a bit chilly in April, but Oh so refreshing in the summer months.
We have had amazing beach parties with friends lasting into the night, with bbques and camp fires.
We have also bought a dinghy boat to go on the river, we can go from home down the river for an amazing adventure seeing lots of wildlife on the way, and a few rapids, we get some funny looks from the French when they see Tara at the front of the boat.
We also love having the goats, they are very friendly especially Flop who Ian hand raised as her mother abandoned her, he fed her with a teat on an old beer bottle, she still thinks he is her mum.
Also having fresh eggs
All had a great stay. Dont want to go home. House & place lovely & Bernadette Ian & Oliver really accomodating. We will all miss Tara. Thanks for a brilliant holiday.
Yet again another fantastic holiday in France. We all loved the gite and all that is on offer. The children loved the lakes nearby and having our own river to swim in was delightful. We agree 2 weeks only just touches whats on offer, we obviously have to come back again.
St Jean pied de Port took less than half an hour to get to and is a true gem of this region. A must. La Belle Auberge at Castegnede serves fantastic food and the staff are really friendly. St jean de Luz & Biarritz are great for spending a day at the beach and shops are great. Sauveterre de Bearn has alovely tea garden on the river. The children can paddle in the river whilst you enjoy the views. Salies de Bearn is very pretty with lots of interesting narrow roads to explore with lovely squares to sit in. Thanks for a great holiday.
This property is probably most popular in the warmer months, but we spent a wonderful two weeks at Christmastime with a spacious home as our base for exploring the region. It is ideally situated and an easy drive to destinations such as Pau, Biarritz, Spain, and the Basque country, and there are local supermarkets and restaurants a short drive (less than 10 minutes) away.
The house is large enough to sleep more, but the two of us appreciated the space, furnishings, and facilities. We enjoy food shopping at markets and there is at least one every day of the week in this area. Cooking back home is easy and if an appliance or implement isn’t available in the kitchen, the owners next door will happily share theirs.
The bedroom was comfortable and all rooms are well-lit with the shutters open and snug in winter, cool in summer with the shutters closed at night.
The main bathroom was large and we appreciated having a real bath/shower, as many rented accommodations only have a tiny shower.
There is internet access, but the signal is week. We never had a problem though, and it was much nicer to while away our evenings playing some of the many available board games and watching seasonal DVDs on the flat screen TV.
There are lots of things to do here for children, including games, a pool, the extensive grounds, and even feeding the chickens and goats.
We used the fireplace every night, but for summer visitors, the river-view terrace will be equally appreciated. The sound of the river, the hooting of the owls, and the starry skies drew us outdoors regardless of the weather.
Our hosts, Ian and Bernadette were very accommodating while never being intrusive. They were available if we needed them, but otherwise we had the place to ourselves. They brought us brochures of activities and events in the area, provided us with extras for our stay, invited us for Christmas drinks and canapés, and provided pleasant conversation.
I would highly recommend this property for many reasons and would certainly return when visiting this area again.
I had promised Ian to write a rubbish review to make sure that no-else booked for next year, but can't bring myself to do it! This is a lovely Gite, in a fabulous location. The beautiful river and acres of space make this a perfect location for a family or couple looking for some quiet time. The Gite is furnished beautifully, everything you need is there - a home from home! Swimming in the river and pool is a great way to avoid the hottest part of the day, and for the shade hugger - table tennis and pool provided. Ian and Bernadette are the perfect hosts - on hand for help or a recommendation for eating out and places to visit, but not intrusive. Very highly recomended - we loved our stay!
All the reviews I read prior to arriving were accurate - it is heaven! Lovely location, relaxing and comfortable house, very helpful owners. The children (10,8 & 6) were happy, we were happy - it was a fantastic 2 week holiday. It really worked!
Thank you so much for a fantastic break - I really feel like I've had a holiday!
We had a wonderful relaxing family holiday in this amazing setting. The farmhouse was charming and very comfortable with everything we needed for our stay. The goats and chickens on the land are a real delight and we enjoyed visiting them and collecting fresh eggs daily. The walk to the private beach is very pleasant and swimming in the river is a must! There are so many places to visit alongside exciting activities within the local area and you can do as much or as little as you like! Bernadette and Ian are the perfect hosts and made us feel very welcome on our arrival and throughout our stay. We highly recommend staying here and we hope to return in the future.
Our family (2 adults and 3 children) had a greeat stay of a week. The comfortable farmhouse has charm and is very well equipped. Washing machine, dishwasher, full range of kitchen utenslis, barbecue etc. There are a lot of games and such like (incl. Playstation, and TV) for children and adults, should the weather be poor, as well as a table-tennis table outside. (We had great weather and didn't need to stay indoors.) The house is set in a large area of meadows. The owners, who live immediately next door, keep goats and chickens and our children enjoyed feeding the goats and collecting the eggs. At the bottom of the meadow is a river. There is a pebbly beach with a picnic table. This is private to the house and is very pleasantly secluded. The deepest part of the river is deep enough for proper swimming. The area is very attractive—Sauveterre is the pretty local town. We should have explored the area more, but staying at the house and river was too enjoyable! Bernadette was very welcoming and helpful. We would certainly be very happy to return here.
What a beautiful place. Set in its own land, alongside a very private section of river, this was the perfect French holiday for us. Ian and Bernadette went out of their way to make us feel welcome, often going beyond the call of duty to help mend stuff, give brilliant advice, explain how things work (to an inquisitive 12-year old) and to lend their expertise and equipment, at times. The area is breathtakingly beautiful - we loved the visit to St Jean de Pied Port - also to San Sebastian. Rafting down the river (with a bunch of French teachers!) was also great fun. We loved the one-meal each day lunch at the Auberge at the end of the road - five courses for 13 euros!
The property was easy to use, felt private, well-equipped (including lots of children's books) and cool in the heat.
We would definitely recommend the property to others - we stayed an extra day as there was so much to do.
