Villa in Las Barreras, near Orgiva, Las Alpujarras, Andalucia, Spain - Very Peaceful Location With Beautiful Views, 40 Minutes From Beach And 40 Minutes From Ski Slopes

The cortijo is in the village of Las Barreras which was once famous for its clay pots made from the red earth. The cortijo is new and we have done all we can to make it wheelchair friendly. There are 3 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, lounge and kitchen/diner. The cortijo is well situated for hikers and walkers and mountain bikers. If you are looking for the "real Spain", then Las Barreras and Orgiva will give you that. At the beginning of June, Las Barreras celebrates its local fiesta to the Virgin of Faith with 4 days of merry-making and this disturbs the normal peace of the area. July and August are the quiet months where the heat of over 30 degrees makes the locals stay up talking outside their houses until 3 or 4 in the morning. September and October are wonderful months because it's still hot, but not oppressively so. November and December mean the oranges are on sale and January is the start of olive picking - and we are in the village in order to do that!

The swimming pool photo is that of our other house to which guests will have sole use until Sol y Sierra's pool is installed. This pool is 10 meters by 5 metre and five minutes drive away.

About Kate Hallett

We are James and Kate. We have been in love with Spain for more years than we care to mention and bought a holiday property in Las Barreras about 14 years' ago after visiting Orgiva in the previous 2 years. We then bought the "finca" with olive, almond, fig and pomegranate trees and decided to build a small house for renting to visitors. Thus Sol y Sierra was constructed.

We are both retired teachers, though Kate still does part-time consultancy work. We try to spend as much time as possible in Spain and have many Spanish friends now. We share a cat with one of our Spanish neighbours and Kate is one of the treasurers for the neighbourhood committee.

Ken takes care of the land and will be on hand to help you.

Why Kate Hallett chose Órgiva

We love this area because it is so Spanish and we feel we are in a different culture. We like to walk to the local bars and chat with the neighbours, play dominos or cards. We have yet to master the local card game Rentoy. We enjoy the fiestas (we both love dancing) and make sure we are in Spain each June and October.

Orgiva couldn't be better placed for visiting the mountains, the beach and Granada. We try to see and hear flamenco at least once a year.

Although the property does not have its own swimming pool, clients are very welcome to use the pool at our own property and our resident caretaker will show you where it is.

  • Description of sleeping capacity: Sleeps 6 (3 Bedrooms) Notes on bedrooms: Bedroom 1 is very large and is wheelchair accessible and has twin beds. It has its own shower room which is wheelchair accessible. Bedrooms 2 and 3 are also double size and their own ensuites. Outside: There are terraces around the house and a garden area. Plenty of shaded corners can be found to enjoy an evening drink. Garden furniture is provided as is a barbecue area. The olive grove has almond trees, fig and pomegranate trees and we have recently planted other fruit trees. This is a working plot of land and visitors should be aware that the fruit terraces can be difficult to walk over, and hence a dedicated garden area has been assigned to the house. Utility Room: The cellar provides secure storage for bikes. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Clean linen and towels are provided and the property is cleaned weekly and at other times by request. Clean linen is available on request during the week and the caretaker is nearby to help with any issues or concerns. Other: As the property is newly built, the insulation is excellent, meaning it will keep cool in summer and warm in winter. Ken lives on the finca and is on hand to help you.

A nice villa well equipped and clean. Beautifully situated with lovely views. Ken was on hand to help with any queries and very helpful and friendly. Look forward to returning when the pool is finished.

The property was perfect, and beautifully clean, well equipped and Ken was brilliant.

The Finca is lovely, and having Ken close by was very useful, the Finca had everything needed and was well equipped and was very clean.

The scenery is amazing. We had a very relaxing time there and are sure to return. We would highly recommend it. When the pool is finished that will be the icing on the cake. Orgiva is a lovely, very Spanish town, with nice restaurants.

Sol Y Sierra is a wonderful place

What a wonderful place. My husband, 6 year old daughter and myself have just spent 2 weeks at Sol Y Sierra. The house has everything you could need and is surrounded by beautiful olive trees and Mountains. If you are looking for a peaceful place to stay but would like a good base to go to the beaches, mountain villages and Granada I would highly recommend staying there. We will definitely be going back .

Fantastic house, lovely location

We had a wonderful in Sol y Sierra. The house was fantastic, situated in a quiet location outside of town in its own beautiful olive grove complete with fig and almond trees. Even so early in the year we were able to breakfast on the balcony in the sunshine, enjoying view of the white-washed town and the mountainside.

The kitchen/dining area and living room provided a lovely space for six of us to cook, eat and relax comfortably. A particularly nice touch was the amount of basic supplies in the house: tea, coffee, milk and sugar, toilet roll, hand soap, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc (just replace what you use) on arrival, which though a simple thing really allowed us to relax straight away. The washing machine was also very welcome as we were travelling very light and had limited changes of clothes. That said, I think the absolute highlight for at least two of our party of six was the separate bathrooms! Two en-suites and one master bathroom ensured that no sharing was required which, now that we’re not eighteen anymore, was particularly appreciated.

The local bars are very traditional Spanish bars: sociable and pleasant. Don’t expect English to be spoken, but ordering a cerveza or vino tinto is not hard and well worth the effort. The lovely white-washed town of Orgiva had everything we needed and, unlike the towns on the Spain coast, gives you the wonderful feeling of really being in Spain and on a proper holiday. We loved it.

There’s no shortage of things to do in the area: we had walkers, mountain bikers and rock-climbers in our group so each day we set out separately for various pursuits. The walkers found some great routes, aided greatly by a book and maps provided by the house owners, which enabled them to explore both the mountainsides and bars of the Alpujarras (including the beautiful villages of Capileira, Pampaneira & Bubion, as high up in the mountains as you can go). Our mountain bikers used a guidebook (Bike-Fax: Mountain Bike Southern Spain) we bought with us and Jonathan, an experienced UK and Europe mountain biker declared to have found “the best singletrack I have ever ridden” on a couple of the rides.

I was climbing with a friend and found plenty of local crags in the area: Orgiva, Capileira, Pinos Del Valle, Lanjaron all had something good to offer and with grades ranging from 4 to 7a+, kept us busy for several days.

All in all, a lovely holiday and would definitely recommend.

Precioso lugar para pasar unos días con tranquilidad.tanto la dueña como el hombre encargado de cuidar el lugar son muy amables ofreciéndote en todo momento lo que casa es perfecta, limpia, todo nuevo y tiene de todo lo que necesitas, hasta al llegar kate nos dio la bienvenida con una cesta de desayuno que incluía de todo(leche, café,pan,té....etc) sin ninguna duda si vuelvo por esta zona volveré a esta encantadora casa.gracias

Olives are harvested in December or January, so if you want to help with this and take home some of your own virgin olive oil, then this can be arranged.

The area is outstanding for mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing.


The beach we love best is Salobrena, which is about 40 minutes by car. It is a mixture of shingle, pebbles and sand depending where you decide to locate yourself! Shade and loungers can be hired for the day for about 5 euros. There are many "chiringuitos" (beach bars) and restaurants on the promenade. It is very spanish and you will get tapas with your drink. The nearest big resort is Almunecar, about 50 minutes by car, and there is a large water park there. There are several smaller coves.


The nearest airport is Granada about 45 minutes by car. Public transport (bus) from Granada bus station is available and the bus stops near to the house. Malaga airport is the airport most people use and is about 1 hour 35 minutes drive. Public transport can be used to get from the airport to the house. However, car hire, though not essential, would be recommended.


Orgiva is the nearest town, 20 minutes walking, 8 minutes drive, 10 minutes by bus.

White mountain villages such as Pampaniera, Capaliera and Trevelez (the highest village in the Sierras) are accessible by car or bus and are worth a visit, ranging between 30 minutes to 60 minutes away. They are famous for Alpujarran woolen garments, leather and "rag" rugs. Granada with the Alhambra and Generalife is a "must" where Flamenco can be seen and heard.

The views of the surrounding mountains are magnificent, especially when the Sierra Nevada are snow-capped, and Orgiva, the local town, can be seen in the valley below. Locally, there are 2 bars within walking distance (1 km and 1.5 km), where they serve typical Spanish food, and a good Menu del Día at about 8 Euros. The area still relies a lot on agriculture, and the goat-herd regularly brings his goats to roam the land.

Orgiva is about a 3 km drive, and walkable in 25 minutes. It is the capital of the western Alpujarra and has all the main facilities: several banks, pharmacy, health centre, bars, supermarkets and restaurants, but is still a traditional Spanish town (not a lot of English is spoken), where you get tapas with your drink. There are 2 good restaurants serving international cuisine. There is a large open air swimming pool and grounds for sunbathing. At Easter there is a town fayre when you can buy local produce of the Alpujarra such as olive oil, wine, honey, cheese, leather goods and iron-work. The town council puts on a range of activities for children and grownups (some free) during August, for example football competitions, dances in the square, theatre trips to the Alhambra, foam baths. They also hold a Flamenco fiesta where one of the locals who is now famous nationally, often sings. At the beginning of October, Orgiva town’s fiesta is held, when once again, all the locals take to the street for paella, migas, sangria and dancing.

The area is outstanding for walkers, both the stroller kind and the serious hiker. Bird watching is particularly good in the early spring, when the birds are in their “courting colours”. Last year, a golden oriole visited the mulberry tree at our house every evening for a week – until all the mulberries were gone. Eagles and vultures are seen regularly gliding on the thermals. There are wild boar in the area, though we’ve never seen one, mountain goats and deer, and little owls live on the finca.

Please contact us if you wish to book "Sol y Sierra". A deposit of 50 euros will be required to secure your booking and this is returnable only up to 6 weeks before your arrival, should you wish to cancel. An advance payment of 50% will be required 60 days before the arrival date, and the final balance will be required 14 days before you arrive. We have no set change over day, but would prefer the weekend. A minimum of 3 nights' stay is required. Cheaper rates for longer stays (3 weeks plus).

Changeover Day:
Weekend change-overs are preferred but this can be flexible. Departure before 11 am is required (later by arrangement). Arrival time is after 2 pm; with access to the garden and facilities before this while the house is being made ready.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 14 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
