Bay Tree House was built in 2004 in keeping with the original Thorpeness architecture. The Studio was purpose built in 2008 above the large detached garage. Access is via an external staircase which is a few yards from the private parking space at the front of the property. The famous Thorpeness "Meare" boating lake, with many original features and boats attracts young and old (Mar to Oct). Being very shallow (less than 18in in most places), it is safe even for the "water wary"! It takes a good two hours to row a boat past The crocodile, Wendy's House and the Pirate's Fort. The area is rich in history and there are many places to visit. Nearby Aldeburgh has a range of shops and restaurants and of course was the home of Benjamin Britten. The studio is non-smoking and is not suitable for children or pets.
Apartment in Thorpeness, Suffolk, England - Within Walking Distance (or Short Drive) of Aldeburgh
About Hazel Searle
Roger & Hazel have lived in Suffolk since 1981, having moved for work reasons to the area. We have lived in various villages and the town of Woodbridge, but became full time residents in the unique Suffolk coastal village of Thorpeness in 2004.
Hazel Searle purchased this Apartment in 2004
Why Hazel Searle chose Thorpeness
Having bought a piece of land in 2000 we needed to decide whether to build a holiday home or a house to live in full time. In the end we built Bay Tree House to live in, but in 2008 created The Studio above the large detached double garage.
What makes this Apartment unique
Thorpeness is a thriving village, within easy reach of towns such as Aldeburgh and Southwold. There are easy walks to the north, south and west, all of which end up at a pub or cafe after a comfortable distance! In the main holiday period, the village is bustling and by contrast it is quiet and peaceful "out of season". Both periods have their advantages. The property itself is compact, but has everything you need for a short break or longer. The flexibility of no fixed arrival and departure days, with just 2 days minimum stay, offers something that is not widely available, particularly in this location and throughout the year.
100% refund if canceled at least 14 days before arrival date. 50% refund if canceled at least 7 days before arrival date.
Unfortunately we had to cut our visit short but we are so glad we found this little Gem. Everything you need in just about the best location, what else do you want? We shall return.
Perfect in every way. Immaculate
Lovely clean, modern accommodation with parking and close to sea . Excellent weekend
Great little place. Well kept with everything you need for a short break
From the minute we booked Roger gave us all the information we needed and contacted us in the week running upto our arrival to arrange things. We were welcomed by Roger when we arrived and were given a quick tour of the studio.
The studio is the perfect space for two people, it's immaculately clean and obviously very well looked after.
It's five mins walk to the pebble beach and two mins to the Dolphin pub. It's feels like more of a restaurant than a pub and we ate here one night and it was great. Better than average pub food and good portion sizes.
I'd recommend making the walk along the beach to Aldeburgh (about 45mins) as theres much more to see. The queues for the chips are definitely worth it!
Overall we can't fault the property or the owners, who were very helpful whilst being non intrusive. Highly recommended.
A little gem
What a wonderful place to stay. It’s a gorgeous garage rooftop conversion in the heart of the quaint village of Thorpeness. The owners Roger & Hazel are lovely and have thought of everything you need for a comfortable stay. It’s one of the loveliest places we have stayed in. The garage is separate from the house so you wouldn’t know you were in someone’s property. The bed is comfy and it’s very cosy. Although I would like to keep this place a secret I can’t say enough good things about this accommodation.
Dear Trevor and Maryanne
Thank you so much for your very kind review. It is always rewarding to receive such comments and to know that our guests have very much enjoyed staying in the Studio and our quaint and quirky village.
We hope that you had a very successful trip to the UK and, who knows, we may see you again sometime; you would certainly be very welcome!
Kind Regards, Roger & Hazel.
Amazing little room.
Think this is a perfect place to stay in Thorpeness for a couple . Small but everything you need for a relaxing break in this charming seaside village with the advantage of off road parking. Thank you Roger and Hazel worth every penny.
Barry and caroline.
Thank you Barry and Caroline for your kind words about The Studio and Thorpeness. Very glad that you enjoyed your stay and we would be very pleased to see you again in the future.
Roger and Hazel
Five minutes easy walk to the beach via a number of routes. The beach is mainly pebbles, with some sand at low water. The water is normal North Sea temperature!
A car is not essential, but does give a much greater choice of places to visit. The nearest airports are Stansted and Norwich. The nearest railway station is at Saxmundam (7mls). Taxis are available, but would need to be pre-booked. There is also a pre-booked Suffolk Link on-demand minibus service. There are buses that occasionally call at Thorpeness, but best to check online first!
Aldeburgh 2mls; Saxmundham 7mls; Southwold 17m; Minsmere RSPB reserve 7mls; Woodbridge 18m; Framlingham (incl Castle) 14mls; Orford (incl Castle) 12mls; Snape Maltings 7mls;
There is a village shop and a small supermarket in Aldeburgh.
The Dolphin pub is only 3 mins walk and provides a balance between a "local" pub and a restaurant. You can also play Boules (Pétanque) in the garden on two purpose built "courts". Next to the Meare is a café and close by is another café and the "Emporium".
The world famous Snape Maltings concert hall is only 7mls from Thorpeness.
