Apartment in Thorpeness, Suffolk, England - Within Easy Walking Distance (or Short Drive) of Aldeburgh

Bay Tree House was built in 2004 in keeping with the original Thorpeness architecture. The Studio was purpose built in 2008 above the large detached garage. Access is via an external staircase which is a few yards from the private parking space at the front of the property. The famous Thorpeness "Meare" boating lake, with many original features and boats attracts young and old (Mar to Oct). Being very shallow (less than 18in in most places), it is safe even for the "water wary"! It takes a good two hours to row a boat past The crocodile, Wendy's House and the Pirate's Fort. The area is rich in history and there are many places to visit. Nearby Aldeburgh has a range of shops and restaurants and of course was the home of Benjamin Britten. The studio is non-smoking and is not suitable for children or pets.

Roger & Hazel have lived in Suffolk since 1981, having moved for work reasons to the area. We have lived in various villages and the town of Woodbridge, but became full time residents in the unique Suffolk coastal village of Thorpeness in 2004.

Why Hazel Searle chose Thorpeness

Having bought a piece of land in 2000 we needed to decide whether to build a holiday home or a house to live in full time. In the end we built Bay Tree House to live in, but in 2008 created The Studio above the large detached double garage.

What makes this apartment unique

Thorpeness is a thriving village, within easy reach of towns such as Aldeburgh and Southwold. There are easy walks to the north, south and west, all of which end up at a pub or cafe after a comfortable distance! In the main holiday period, the village is bustling and by contrast it is quiet and peaceful "out of season". Both periods have their advantages.

The property itself is compact, but has everything you need for a short break or longer. The flexibility of no fixed arrival and departure days, with just 2 days minimum stay, offers something that is not widely available, particularly in this location and throughout the year.

Notes on accommodation: Heating is by electric wall mounted convector heater and the bathroom has its own heater and electric towel rail. We are sorry that pets are not accepted in The Studio. Outside: There is a small area outside the Studio entrance door (1st floor level) where it is possible to sit (2 chairs are provided). There is also a table and chairs at the front of the main house, where guests are welcome to sit. It is east facing so very pleasant for breakfast. Bicycles can be stored in the garage below the Studio by arrangement. Private parking for Studio guests is at the front of the house, on The Sanctuary. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, Tea Towels and all bedding are provided, along with basics such as coffee, tea, washing up liquid and cloths. The Shower Room is equipped with shower gel, shampoo and soap. Towels and bedding can be changed for stays greater than 7 nights.

Beautiful little studio in an amazing setting.

The Studio was a lovely place to stay with everything you could possibly need for a short holiday. Our hosts were charming and non intrusive and the setting was beautiful in a very quaint village.

romantic weekend away

I would highly recommend this studio to anyone! It is in a lovely quiet location with only a short walk to the beach and boating lake. There is also a shop and pub conveniently located round the corner, and Aldeburgh is a walkable distance taking about 20 minutes! The studio is beautifully decorated and well kept. It is very clean and had everything you could possibly need and more! The owners went the extra mile to make it feel homely. The room itself is spacious and perfect for a short break away! Brilliant place to stay at a very reasonable price! Thanks for letting us stay!

Beautiful weekend away

This is a brilliant place to stay for a break away in the UK. It is in a lovely quiet location near the beach, has a pub and shop conveniently located around the corner and is only a short walk from Aldeburgh. The studio is beautifully decorated and the owners go the extra mile to make it feel like home with little extra touches. Everything was clean and well presented. Its a lovely spacious room with everything you could possibly need and more! It's an absolute pleasure to stay in such a wonderful place for such a good price- much more affordable and if not better than B&B's! Highly recommend it!

A beautiful studio apartment with every thing you need, 1 minute walk to the sea. Owners are delightful and so helpful . Amazing village and perfect location for exploring Suffolk We would definitely visit again, and great value for money too.

Five minutes easy walk to the beach via a number of routes. The beach is mainly pebbles, with some sand at low water. The water is normal North Sea temperature!


A car is not essential, but does give a much greater choice of places to visit. The nearest airports are Stansted and Norwich. The nearest railway station is at Saxmundam (7mls). Taxis are available, but would need to be pre-booked. There is also a pre-booked Suffolk Link on-demand minibus service. There are buses that occasionally call at Thorpeness, but best to check online first!

Further Details:

There is a village shop and a small supermarket in Aldeburgh.

The Dolphin pub is only 3 mins walk and provides a balance between a "local" pub and a restaurant. You can also play Boules (Pétanque) in the garden on two purpose built "courts". Next to the Meare is a café and close by is another café and the "Emporium".

The world famous Snape Maltings concert hall is only 7mls from Thorpeness.

Changeover Day:
The Studio can be booked for arrival or departure on any days, subject to availability. Arrival is after 2pm and departure by 11am, However, we are flexible and can often accommodate other times.
PLEASE NOTE: The minimum booking is for 2 nights (£110)

Notes on prices:
£55/night for 2 or 3 nights (minimum stay is 2 nights)
£45/night for 4 or 5 nights
£240 for 6 night stay
£260 for 7 night stay
Periods of more than a week are charged at pro-rata the weekly rate.
