Nestled in the crook of the stunning bay of Kioni, our self catering, air conditioned apartment look out across clear blue water to 4 clean beaches opposite. Listed as a heritage village in 2005, Kioni is surrounded by rich green forests and olive groves, while restaurants, kafeneios and bars are dotted along the waterfront outside the apartment. There’s a well stocked mini market and a bakery just minutes from the front door. There are motor boats for hire (no license needed) which allow you to explore the coves and beaches outside the bay, or walkers can amble over to the remains of the three mills that guard the entrance to the bay, or up into the hills to the next village (about 5km away). There is only one road to and from Kioni, making it an ideal getaway destination.
“Awesome place right in the heart of Kioni… Restaurants and beaches are excellent here and the snorkelling is amazing! Couldn't recommend enough!”
“Must be the best spot in Kioni overlooking the harbour and restaurants.
Loads of boat comings and goings and anchors getting knitted, so much entertainment!"
There are four beaches in the bay. The furthest is less than a mile away and has a little cafe on it for lunch and if requested, dinners.
The quickest way to reach Ithaca is by flying in to neighbouring Kefalonia. From the airport you can take a bus (1hr) or taxi or your hire car (40 mins) across the island to the port of Sami where a ferry will take you across to Piso Aetos (30 mins). Once there it’s a 35 minute drive to Kioni.
You can also get to Ithaca from Athens. You can take the train, coach or drive to the port of Patras (about 3 hours). From there the ferry to Ithaca takes about 4 hours.
Ithaca is 18 miles (29km) long and 4 miles (6.5km) wide. There is one large port town Vathy which is 40 minutes to the south by car from Kioni and a large village, Stavro, about 20 minutes from Kioni by car.
Apart from its beautiful coast line and beaches which have been enjoyed by many Hollywood A-listers and Royalty, you can visit mountain top monasteries, caves, and see late Byzantine frescos. A short car journey away, near Stavro is the site of Odysseus’ Palace which, after centuries of speculation, was finally discovered in 2010, as reported in this article in The Telegraph.
