About the property

The Perfect Escape - Stunning, Elegant And Simple

One of our guests described St Aidan's as awe-inspiring and cosy at the same time! There's the wow factor of the listed interior with its beautiful painted ceiling, and the stylish modern design of the extension bringing together old and new. All the accommodation is on one level. The sitting room and dining area are in the nave of the church, and behind the chancel screen with it's painted wooden doors is the bedroom. A spacious, superbly equipped kitchen has a table and chairs. There is a contemporary bathroom and a separate wet room with shower, each with toilet. The garden room with full length sliding window opens onto a sun trap patio with a rural view, and can be used as a second bedroom with sofa bed. Carlton is a quiet hamlet just outside Helmsley, on the way up to gorgeous Bransdale.

About Vanessa Bridge

Rescuing St Aidans's and transforming it to a much-admired holiday 'cottage' was not without it's challenges, but it was a labour of love for us.

We discovered the history of St Aidan's architect Temple Lushington Moore, and found out that in his day he had been considered one of the greatest of church architects.

And we discovered the wonderful landscape, towns, villages and people of the North York Moors.

We hope that you enjoy your stay.

Why Vanessa Bridge chose North Yorkshire

The North York Moors have an amazing variety of beautiful and unspoilt landscapes from farmland, moorland, coast, valleys and woods. You can walk and bike and explore, and listen to silence.

Another thing we love about holidaying in the area is the great food. From fabulous afternoon tea to sharing platters, from top fish and chips to gourmet fare, it's all here to try.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"One of the best 'cottages' we have ever stayed in, managing to be awe inspiring and cosy at the same time. The kids loved sleeping on either side of the altar in the chancel and we were very comfortable on the sofa bed. Did lots of cooking and found everything we needed. Visited Rievaulx, Rievaulx Terrace, and Helmsley Castle. The walk down the valley to Helmsley is v. pretty, if a bit squelchy in October. Loved it, loved it, loved it".

Orpwood family, Sheffield

"St Aidan's is a really special place. The church itself is a gem and fully deserves its listed status. The contemporary extension is incredibly stylish, comfortable and well equipped. Carlton itself is full of charm with great local walks literally on the doorstep. Black-faced sheep watched while we had fresh farm eggs for breakfast on the patio and shetland ponies and their owners trotted over to see us during afternoon tea. It was an idyllic location for our family gathering".
