About Janine Twidale

My wife and I live outside Aylesbury with our two boys. I work in London and my wife works at the local village school. We love our holidays and go skiing and to Menorca at least once each year.

Janine Twidale purchased this apartment in 1970

Why Janine Twidale chose Binibequer

My parents bought the property in 1971. They were one of the first English people to buy property in Menorca. My brother and I were aged just 2 and 3 but my parents found the beaches and the Island generally very safe and family friendly. We spent every summer there throughout my childhood and my wife and I have now taken the property on and take our children there every year. We and they love it because we can do our own thing. We do not feel part of a crowd. We make friends with other families but also can have our own time on beaches or various swimming pools close by. We have travelled a lot but cannot think of anywhere more tranquil.

What makes this apartment unique

As the apartment was one of the first built, it is right on the coastline and has unspoilt views of the sea. You can dive in the sea within a couple of minutes. It is also 10 minutes walk from the apartment to a lovely beach.

The balcony is where we enjoy a sundowner, listening to the lap of the water, watching the yachts go back to Mahon and, of course, watching the sun go down! Before or after that we usually eat on the roof terrace which is large and where we have had a BBQ built.

There are also many restaurants within walking distance that provide a variety of cuisines.

There is a supermarket nearby easily accessible by foot that provides all you would need.

Guestbook comments from the owner

2014 was our first rental year and we were fully booked for the season, much to our delight.

Notes on accommodation: It is a lovely apartment overlooking the sea. Everything, from walking from the balcony to being in the water in two minutes, to walking to the supermarket for anything you need, from walking to the beach in 10 minutes and from walking to a variety of restaurants is where we are. We do not always hire a car. That said, the island is small, the roads good and there is much to explore. Outside: A balcony overlooking the sea, no building or anything in between, where there is a table and chairs which comfortably sits four. We also have a large roof terrace with a brick constructed barbecue and dining table for six, again overlooking the sea. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen is provided, including clean sheets on the beds on arrival, bath towels, kitchen towels and, on request, beach/swimming towels. The apartment will have been cleaned and aired prior to arrival.

Perfect location for a family stay in Cala Torrett

  • 5 of 5

Just back yesterday, 7th July 2018 from a weeks stay at this lovely little two bedroom apartment with our two boys (age 3 and 4). The location was just about perfect for us, being just next to a group of great seafront restaurants, and with the supermarket and a couple of little bars very close indeed.

We had read a horrific review of this property after we had booked it, but experienced none of the problems that the previous reviewer had alleged. It was clean and tidy, well presented and typical of this sort of accommodation. At the price we thought it was great value and would love to come back. The views from the apartment are to die for and we loved nothing more of an evening than to sit on the balcony with a few drinks watching swimmers in the cove and guest arriving to eat on the terraces of the restaurants outside.

Although it was August we found we could always park quite nearby (we had a car) either on the main road by the supermarket, or on the road that leads down to the front of the development and the sea. There is ample parking elsewhere as well. There is plenty to do on the island, and we would often explore in the morning and swim in the afternoon, Mahon and Ciutadella are great places.

You could swim in the cove just in front of the apartment, where many locals spend the afternoon sunbathing on the rocks and swimming/snorkelling in the clear calm waters of the cove. The main beach was a 5 minute walk away, with lovely sand and shallow clear waters that made it a great place for our little boys to splash, swim and play. The Barracuda beach bar there was a great place for a drink post swim. We were pleased that there were a lot of Spanish and German people here, and that it was not all Brits...

The restaurants are great, mainly specialising in fish as you would expect.... and it was wonderful having such a choice right on the doorstep. They all catered for our children very well indeed and late dining with children was very common and something the Spanish do well. It was very much a family sort of place.

Regarding the previous poor review, the "outdoor fish restaurant" was a charming place named Barracuda with tables outside and in the square and the "music bar" was a charming little tapas bar just by the entrance to the passage leading to the apartment. No late night loud music at all... all pretty quiet by 11pm most nights....

Overall, a pretty idilic place to spend a week in Menorca, we loved it.

Electric shocks in damp house, with constant smell of fish, and noise until 3 a.m!!

  • 1 of 5

Arrived (May 24th) to a very damp house. Beds, furnishing fabrics all wet and cleaning poor. No gas supply and broken kettle so no hot drinks/food until following day when kettle replaced and gas bottle connected.

Dampness. On the first night my partner Michiel had no sleep at all because of damp bed and bedding. I got 2 hours sleep on a lilo plus layers of clothing. Agency staff shrugged and said the problem was common in Menorca - tolerate it. We then spent a morning pegging out all bedding, blankets etc. After a day it was dry/useable. I had contacted the owner on booking - telling her that I suffer from osteoarthritis so feel particularly aggrieved at this deception.

Electric shocks. Second day - electric shocks in bathroom from taps, kitchen from taps and microwave. Reported to Redorka agency, handyman visits the next day but says there's nothing wrong, electric shocks continue. Redorka staff member - Marie Theresa tells us to wear shoes! Baffling lack of responsibility?!

Return the following day but office closed. Shocks increase. I have an enormous one from the cooker when I try to push in a baking tray (oven dirty and rusted inside). Knocks me backwards - bang my head on corner of microwave. Weep. Return to Redorka and insist on a plumber being sent. Stay in next day to show plumber problems (June 1st). Plumber searches for problem - after an hour, I stress again the interaction between metal and water and he finally removes the bottom of boiler to find bare wiring, water and years of rust in great blooms at the end of bare wires and completely covering all electric connections (photos available). 3.30 same day plumber returns, fits new boiler.

No hot water that evening as boiler charges. A full week of our holiday has gone.

Restricted use. Adjacent to apartment exit a new outdoor fish restaurant has opened. Cooking begins at 15.00 - balcony and roof terrace unusable because of nauseating smell. Constant loud music until about 3.00 am made sleep very difficult. Also - could not open any windows, so rooms hot and uncomfortable. Front door badly fitting so noise passed through. Very oppressive when it is constant.

Building work on three sides - repair to path, adaptations to restaurant and construction of new wine bar in building adjacent to fish bar across path added to discomfort.

Owner's Response: It is with utter regret to have been informed of the cleanliness of the apartment and of the two new establishments being built, one already up and running, a fish restaurant. Neither of these establishments were ever identified to me, so all this came as a total shock. I have been in contact with the agency regarding the cleanliness and my utter dismay at this, given I am in England and cannot maintain the apartment from over here and also for not being informed about the new situation. I have informed all my forthcoming guests of the situation, all of whom have been extremely understanding knowing that the new developments were beyond my control. Having been out in August 2017 with my family, the apartment was up and running and there was no problems with the cleanliness etc then. I apologise to all forthcoming guests. I have also informed the agency that I expect higher standards of cleaning.

A Wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely apartment in April 2015, needing a quiet space away, and this was exactly what we found. The tourist season doesn't begin until May 1st so many restaurants and the supermarket were not open yet. Also, the buses were not running often, so having a car was very necessary. We enjoyed the peace of the island at this time, which was so easy to explore, the roads and beaches were empty, and Menorca is simply beautiful in the spring.

The apartment really has a warm and friendly feel to it. It is perfectly positioned overlooking the sea, very comfortable and well equipped for self catering. Cala Torret is a great find, full of kind people and a very safe area.

Thank you for a special holiday.

Relax in Cala Torret

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to this apartment, but we have been holidaying in Cala Torret Menorca on and off for 35 years.

We loved every minute we spent in this 2 bedroom apartment it rates among one the best we have visited on our extensive travels. The quality of furnishings both inside and outside are first class.the balcony was a delight to sit on overlooking the inlet of Cala Torret whilst enjoying a sundowner cocktail or gin and tonic. The extensive rooftop terrace had a six seater table and chairs for alfresco dining and ample quality sun loungers it's a real suntrap.

Lovely fitted kitchen with oven hob microwave, large fridge/freezer and also a washing machine. in the lounge dining table to seat between 6 and 8 and new l shape sofa and comfy chair that extends to make 2 more beds if required. also 2 good sized bedrooms with twin beds everything you need for a great holiday. The village of Cala Torret overlooking the sea about 7 great restaurants a supermarket and super little bakery open for breakfast and turns into a cocktail/bar in the evenings.Try Cala Torret the hidden gem of Menorca

What a view!

  • 4 of 5

The location and views from this apartment are unsurpassed! You have everything on your doorstep, shop, restaurants, (wonderful) bakery and a short walk to a lovely sandy beach, with a great beach bar. We enjoyed sundowners on the apartment balcony overlooking the sea, and swam from the rocks literally a stone's throw away. The roof terrace is a great suntrap for those wanting to work on their tan too, or for evening meals.

Just what we wanted

  • 4 of 5

Fabulous place. It was really peaceful, even in mid season, and the people were so friendly. The apartment has a wonderful view, right over the sea. A small supermarket is on the doorstep as are some wonderful restaurants. El Faro, just below offered good food, and the owners were great. We also recommend going 10 minutes in land to La Caraba - Michelin star quality food, at a quarter of the cost! The beach is only 10 minute walk away and beautiful. We hope to return one day.

Car: not necessary

Special interest holidays:

The capital, Mahon, is the deepest harbour in the Mediterranean and is believed to be the deepest or second deepest in the world. The highest point on the island is a famous monastery called Monte Toro which is still an active monastery. There are many battlements and a prison that show how the British and Spanish fought for the island over the years.

The cove, with ladders and entry bays, is within two minutes (maximum). The beach, called Los Buccaneros, which is very safe and has a restaurant/bar within 10 minutes comfortable walk/4 minutes drive. The beach is clean, not large and not overcrowded. There are no hotels by the beach, which remains family owned.

Previous guests have advised that we should highlight the proximity of the supermarket which is within a short walking distance and well stocked.

The only airport is Mahon (Mao), the capital of Menorca, which is 20 minutes from the apartment. Taxis are easily available. One does not need a car.

The apartment is located in Cala Torret which itself has a number of restaurants and a supermarket. The nearest village is Binibeca and is approximately 1 mile away from Cala Torret to the west. There are also a couple of villages to the east, namely, Biniancolla and Punta Prima, which are 1 and 2 miles away respectively.

Further Details:

There is a cash point in Binibeca, also shops and supermarkets and intricate alleyways - just one mile away or, you can go into St Luis where there are a few banks with cash points, shops and supermarkets.

Various local establishments have swimming pools.
