Barnacles apartment in Swanage, Dorset, England - Peaceful Location, 5 Minutes Walk To The Beach And Less To A Range Of Pubs, Shops And Eating Places

Close to the town, beach and coastal path, the flat is peaceful and full of light with different sea, hill and beach views to enjoy from each room. The furnishings are comfortably modern with colourful rugs. The flat consists of two 'wings' (with a kitchen you can eat in, a large sitting room, and bedroom) and this unusual orientation makes it very spacious and brings the sun in all the year round. Central heating makes it cosy in the winter. The position is perfect for those who want to set off walking along the SW coastal path or Purbeck Way, take the steam train to Corfe Castle, or spend the day on the beach then retreat to the peace and quiet of Barnacles before trying the many pubs and eating places in town. Between Swanage and Lulworth the coastal scenery is dramatic and craggy with beaches and old stone quarries. Swanage also has a variety of festivals including the Purbeck Art Weeks Festival at the end of May, the popular Jazz Festival in July, a Chamber Music Festival in early September, and the famous Purbeck Film Festival in October.

About Charlotte Heath

Soon after I left the Department for International Development in 2012 we were lucky enough find this long dreamt of toe hold in Purbeck. In addition to just enjoying being here I am now very involved in Purbeck Art Weeks Festival and the Purbeck Chamber Music Festival. I do some social development consultancy work in Nepal and Tajikistan. I started out life with music and studying the cello, then changed my mind and went to art college in London to study textiles. I was a weaver for a number of years, and love colour and texture. This took me to all sorts of interesting places including the Middle East where I spent several years working with Bedouin weavers in Oman and the Negev. My home is in Highbury, London with my partner Oded - and spending time in Barnacles and Swanage continues to give us a huge amount of pleasure, me in particular! I hope you enjoy it too.

Why Charlotte Heath chose Swanage

My family have been connected to the Kimmeridge area since the early 1900's, and I have been coming down here since I was born in 1952. At the end of 2012, after a long two year search, we found this flat in Swanage. What particularly appealed were the different views of the sea and hills from each room, the light pouring into the flat all day, and the fact that the sea, cliff tops of Peveril Point and the coastal path are so close by. It's also quiet here, which is very important to us. And there's something special about a window seat! I love gardening so got permission from Swanage Council to cultivate the verges around the house. The plants are gradually becoming established and learning to protect themselves from the Swanage Council mowers!

What makes this apartment unique

I can't imagine ever being bored here - each season has its own interest - for photography, collecting drift wood, reading, observing, walking and exploring - or simply watching the changing light across the sea and hills. After coming to the area for so many years it's a pleasure to know that it remains easy to get away from the 'crowds' - which in any case are never very big here even in August.

You will see some unusual glass work in the flat too.

Notes on accommodation: There is no smoking anywhere in the building and we are unable to accept pets. There is plenty of hot water – and you can enjoy a bath whilst listening to the gentle clucking of our neighbours chickens (no cockerels!). Our neighbours upstairs and downstairs are permanent residents so we ask you to respect that. The flat is very spacious with bags of room for two people and independency. The sea front is a couple of minutes away if you want an evening stroll or fish and chips – and walking the other way there is a lovely path along the cliff top and through the woods to Durlston Park for a glass of wine in the Seventh Wave restaurant as you watch the sun setting. A short car journey away (or longer walk) there is the unspoilt Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers , the deserted village of Tyneham, the Kings Arms in Kingston for good food and wonderful views, and many wild heathlands to explore including the Arne RSPB reserve. Outside: A rotary drying frame is available for bathing towels. One allocated parking space for your car. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Cleaning service: Barnacles is cleaned prior to your arrival and the bed is made up. Bed linen, towels (1 bath and 1 hand towel per person), and tea towels are included. Please bring your own beach towels. Feather duvets and 4 pillows are provided. Fibre on request. Other: Generous hallway with ample hooks for jackets, coats, shoes.

Excellent accommodation

A comfortable, clean, well maintained property with excellent facilities/equipment. Everything we could have wanted for a self-catering holiday.

Useful information provided by owner and key delivery/return arrangements worked well.

We particularly enjoyed visits to Tank Museum, RSPB Arne, Swanage Railway, Norden Ball Clay Mining Museum, Etches Museum at Kimmeridge, Corfe Castle, Durlston Country Park.

Some of pubs in Swanage not really to our taste for evening dining but recommend The Old Brick Oven restaurant for pasta/pizza and the restaurant at Durlston Visitor Centre looked worth a visit but open in evenings only on Friday & Saturday.

Would definitely recommend Barnacles and may well return ourselves.

Relaxing Haven

Property is exactly as described , light, airy, tastefully decorated and fitted with everything you need for a relaxing holiday, Great place to come "home" to after being out all day, very peaceful in the evenings. Would recommend the Tea and Supper Room in Worth Matravers. Charlotte responds very quickly to any questions you may have, however trivial. Neither of us wanted to come home after this holiday . Hope we get back one day.

a home from home...

Barnacles is a light, spacious and characterful flat, about 5 minutes walk from Swanage's pleasant seafront and less than a mile from the Durlston cliff area with its well preserved Victorian charm. The flat is also a good base for exploring the Isle of Purbeck and the rest of this corner of Dorset, with some of the most scenic walks of the south coast no more than a 10-20 minutes drive away.

The flat is fully equipped and a very comfortable 'home from home' for the tired walker. Highly recommended.

If you don't want to use the car then the SW coastal path is just 5 mins walk away - I tend to go towards Dancing Ledge, but Studland is just around Swanage bay and over the hill in the other direction - or you can go along the ridge to Corfe (and back by on a Swanage railway train!).

beautiful, creative, homely

We loved staying in this cosy and curated flat - there are vibrant colours everywhere - rugs, ceramics, glass and interesting paintings and textiles. The flat has everything you could want for cooking and relaxing and helpfully there is a hairdryer. The bed is really spacious and comfortable and the kitchen is a charming place to sit in too. The peace, the views, the light and fresh air and we were even lucky with sunshine. You can see the bay curving round from the bedroom/lounge and aswell as wonderful sea glimpses and birds swooping towards it from the lounge. We walked the long way round the cliff path to Langton Mattravers where there are many places of interest - towers, castle and giant stone globe overlooking a cliffside path and drop with sea birds and the chance of seeing a porpoise. There was a warm welcome in the Kings Head pub for a delicious ploughmans followed by home made cheesecake. The area feels so peaceful, calm and colourful, a perfect antidote to the metropolis. The Blues crowd were laid back and friendly and so were the locals, there are many festivals here to enjoy. Anyway it was such a lovely experience I think we could both imagine living in Swanage one day, we will look forward to visiting again later in the year.

The seafront is a 2 minute walk, and Swanage's own sandy beach is just a 5 minute walk. Studland's National Trust sandy beaches and Shell Bay are 10 minutes away driving (or longer if walking). Going westward Kimmeridge Bay is a short drive away and great for walking, swimming, fossils and surfing. Lulworth Cove is a little further, with a pretty village and good swimming. Durdle Door is about 40 minutes by car. Bournemouth's sandy beaches can be reached via Sandbanks Ferry from Studland.


Swanage can be reached by train to Wareham from London Waterloo, then a bus (Purbeck Breezer 40) or taxi to Swanage. Other options are hiring a car from U Drive next to the station, or bicycles from platform 1. A car is not essential during your stay as there's plenty to do locally, with a good local bus service along the coast and a steam train from the centre of Swanage to Corfe Castle. The nearest airport is Hurn near Bournemouth - about 12 miles away via Sandbanks Ferry to Studland.

Pubs, restaurants and shops are all within 3 minutes of the apartment. On the provisions side there are two supermarkets plus several bakers, two banks, a delicatessen and a butcher. There is a range of other interesting shops as well as several small Galleries, including the new StoneWork Gallery on the High St. The Mowlem Centre provides cinema and theatre. Other places of interest are Brownsea Island nature reserve (National Trust) which is beautifully positioned in Poole harbour and famous for red squirrels. The ferry goes from Poole Quay. In Wareham you can go boating on the River Frome ending up at The Granary on the quayside for a drink, lunch or evening meal - before seeing a film at the historic Rex Cinema. Near Wareham is Arne (RSPB) nature reserve which is an unusual and special landscape where you can enjoy a vast expanse of open heathland and old oak woodland; it's a fantastic place for walks at any time of year and you may see Dartford Warblers, Nightjars or Ospreys. If you enjoy historic houses there is also Kingston Lacey, a fine 17 C manor house (National Trust) near Wimbourne Minster.

The grassy cliff top 'lawns' of Peveril Point are literally 2 minutes walk away - for picnics, sun bathing or an evening sundowner.

Booking Notes:
Please send your enquiries by email. If the dates are available I will send you a booking form to fill in and return with a cheque either for the deposit or the full amount. You will be asked for a deposit of 25% up front to secure the booking. The balance is due at least a month before the start of the holiday. I am usually happy to take bookings of less than 7 nights (3 minimum) in off peak periods - so please do ask. The charge for less than 7 nights is worked out as a percentage of a full week.

Changeover Day:
Changeover days can be flexible depending on how it fits with other bookings and cleaning schedules.

I request a 25% non returnable deposit with the completed booking form. The full balance is due at least a month before your booking. If for any reason you do have to cancel your holiday I'm happy to consider refunding you in full (including your deposit) if I can get a replacement booking.
