A picture perfect, 2 bedroom, mews house in Barga, just steps from the ancient walled centre. Built in the 19th century, the house retains its original beams and terracotta tile floors. Updated with gas central heating and a rustic style modern kitchen. The cosy sitting room has a 32” digital TV and a book case with a splendid collection of fiction and reference material. The master bedroom has a pretty Juliette balcony with table and chairs for you to sit and enjoy your breakfast or just to soak up Barga’s unique atmosphere. Both bedrooms have ceiling fans. The old cantina on the ground floor has been converted into a cool summer kitchen with table and chairs, sink unit, refrigerator and washing machine. Free parking within 50 yards.
Hi, my name is Carl Diletti. I live and work in Australia but my family is from Massa Macinaia, a small village just a few kilometres from Lucca.
Along with thousands of other Italians, my family emigrated to Australia just after WWII.
I was born in Perth in the 60s but it wasn't until 1990 that I was able to make my first trip to Italy to meet my family in Lucca.
I decided there and then that one day I would have my own house in Italy and eventually retire there. Over the many visits since, my opinion has never changed.
Carl Diletti purchased this house in 2012
I was finally in a position to buy my beautiful house in Barga in 2012. I'm looking forward to a long and happy retirement there sometime in the future.
In the meantime, I'm delighted to be able to share it with visitors to Barga!
I chose to buy this house because it is ideally positioned in the centre of Barga, just a short walk to a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants. It's only an hour's drive to the coast and just 45 minutes from my family near Lucca.
The house is on a quiet cobbled lane, just a 3 minute walk from the ancient town walls. One of the previous owners was a writer and there is some evidence that he once lived there as there is still "a book in every nook"!
My favourite place in the house is the Juliette balcony in the master bedroom, where I enjoy my morning coffee whilst taking in the view of the old town.
Work has just been completed on the 'summer kitchen', which is on the ground floor. It adjoins the little 'al fresco' spot at the foot of the stone steps that lead up to the main floor and provides a great place to sit and read.
The house has recently undergone extensive renovation and redecoration. I have been careful to retain the original character of the house and I'm delighted with the result.
Our recent stay at the Barga House was most memorable.
From arriving at Pisa, meeting Lesley the Agent to welcome us at the start of our holiday then on departure day, everything was perfect.
On arrival Lesley had some essential goodies for our first night and gave as a guided tour of the house, we were not disappointed.
The house had absolutely everything we needed, Carl the owner had thought of everything visitors may need for their stay. The Kitchen was super to sit in the morning for our breakfast, it was large and spacious. The sitting room was perfect for relaxing after a day at the pool, before heading into the old town for our evening meal and sampling the beautiful wines. Both bedrooms were airy and spacious giving my husband, son and I plenty of space during our stay, having fans in each of the rooms was a great relief from the hot days and nights. The standard of decor and restoration was first class, the whole house was spotless with plenty of linen and fluffy towels that we needed.
The location was perfect for popping down for some shopping, breakfast out and for meeting up with our friends and family each night. The views from our bedroom were breathtaking.
I hope we may return again soon, thank you for a truly wonderful stay.
This was a lovely house that was just right for our needs during a two week stay in Barga. Three minute walk from a morning coffee at Alpina was a great start to a day. If you closed the shutters at the right time each day, the rooms would stay cool. Lesley (Carl's agent) could not be more helpful. The bed was very comfortable. I would recommend this place for another stay in Barga. Thanks
The Barga House is cozy, traditional and well-equipped with lots of modern amenities. The welcome was warm and friendly and we were greeted with a bottle of wine, bread and cheese, which was a really nice touch, especially as we arrived in Barga at 22.30!
Situated in the 'new' town where it was quiet, just a 5 minute from the historic centre, the location was excellent. Although the house did not have air conditioning, fans were supplied and closing the shutters kept the sun out through the day. The property does not have wi-fi. We emailed the owner about this and he supplied us with helpful information; the nearby library and virtually all the bars in the town have free wi-fi, so this wasn't an issue throughout our stay. We would be glad to stay here again, should we return to Barga and would recommend it to others as a perfect base to explore this beautiful, vibrant hilltop town.
We had stayed in Barga many times prior to this visit, in a villa in the mountains, a villa in the new town, a smaller apartment in the old town & a posh B&B! So we had plenty to compare it with.
I knew the location very well & it was set perfectly for a short walk for morning coffee whilst buying delicious fresh eggs for breakfast at the friendliest grocer in town.
We had a warm welcome from Lesley who had organised a lift from the train for us. She had welcomed us with fresh bread, wine & a well stocked pantry.
The house was charming & so very clean & fresh. The kitchen & living room had been refurbished to a very high standard, modern where it needed to be (kitchen & bathroom) whilst retaining the beautiful features of a Tuscan home - original beams, shutters to the windows. The bedrooms where just as impressive - lovely linen/towels with plenty of storage. A beautiful Juliet balcony off the master bedroom was stunning.
Whilst it lacked air con the huge fans available, together with the shutters, kept us comfortable in the hotter than usual heat!
The local restaurants never disappoint with food, music & atmosphere. The market under the stars is a delight - as is the live music events.
The Duomo presides over the town offering a view to end all views & a tranquility to those that want it.
A lovely, lovely holiday.
Ideal location in quiet area but only 5 minute walk from Barga old town with all its attractions. Very clean with modern kitchen and bathroom and 2 good sized bedrooms upstairs. Laundry facilities in a nice cool cellar with small outside seating area for escaping from the summer heat. Owners provided a generous welcoming gift of some food and drinks and were very warm and helpful. Would recommend as ideal for this type of accommodation in Barga.

There is a very popular public swimming pool and lido just 10 minutes walk from the centre of Barga. Spend a great day there, lounging by the pool with a picnic or a snack from the bar. Horse-riding, walking, cycling and fishing are among the activities available in the surrounding hills and lakes. As well as sight-seeing in the classic Tuscan tourist spots such as Lucca’s ancient walls, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Duomo of Florence, Barga’s ideal location also offers guests the chance to experience the natural beauty of the Garfagnana, as yet unspoilt by tourism, with its winding mountain roads leading up to archetypal Italian villages, high enough to disappear into the clouds. There are many great places to eat in Barga and the surrounding towns and villages. See the Eating Out guide in our information book at the house.
