About Sophie Verschuur

We moved from London 5 years ago to this beautiful and well placed area in Kent. Over time we have collected an array of pets: dogs, cats, rabbits and chickens who can regularly be seen roaming the garden. We are relaxed and easy going and are always happy to help our guests in anyway whether it is information or recommendations. We run our holiday let for pleasure and so far everyone has been fantastic.

Sophie Verschuur purchased this barn in 2010

Why Sophie Verschuur chose Kent

It is excellently placed for everything you could wish for: walks on your doorstep with beautiful countryside, small villages, large towns, trains and good commutability.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lovely cottage with beautiful interior. We enjoyed the tasty cake and waking up to chickens. Many thanks dear Sophie. We'll come back

Canadians Enjoy a Cottage in Kent

  • 5 of 5

We are home in Canada having spent a wonderful week in Freshwater Barn. Sophie was excellent in communicating with us from a distance, and her warm welcome, including a freshly baked loaf and flowers from her garden, made us feel at home. The cottage, including a gourmet stove, is well equipped and very comfortable for two people. The local village has a friendly pub, small grocery store with local products, and a meat shop.

Freshwater Barn is well located for touring. We visited Bodiam, Sissinghurst and Scotney, all lovely in the September sunshine. We also walked for miles on the public footpaths while geocaching on the beautiful Kent Weald. Our holiday at Freshwater Barn will always be memorable. Thank you Sophie.

Pleasant, well-equipped cottage for 2

  • 5 of 5

Freshwater Barn fully met our needs for a comfortable, quiet, short stay for two during our first visit to Kent. Within easy reach of a variety of activities, it's set in a very pleasant village.

Sophie's home-made cake went down a treat and the cut flowers in the accommodation were a nice touch. We'd certainly consider booking again when we're next in Kent.

Very welcome Cottage, tidy and clean, wonderful location for walks and nature

  • 5 of 5

It´s like coming home! (no recommend to our friends or relatives, we´d like to get ourselve a lot of time to spend here)

Very nice quiet property, clean and well maintained. Well situated for National Trust gardens.

  • 5 of 5

The property was clean, well maintained and as listed. It provided us a quiet and restful break. The owner was very friendly and helpful and welcomed us with a very nice cake. The property was well situated for visits to the gardens of Sissinghurst , Batemans, Scotney Castle and Great Dixter. The nature reserves of Dungeness and Romney Marsh were less than one hour away. The Bull in Benenden was friendly and convenient for acceptable evening meals.

The well behaved dogs, cat and chickens were not a problem and provided added interest. We would not hesitate to return and would recommend this property.

A Home From Home

  • 5 of 5

Freshwater Barn ought to be one of the best kept secrets in Britain. So it is something like a contradiction to write about Sophie’s fabulous propert – on the internet…! But she and her family, as well as the dogs and the chickens – all well educated – absolutely deserve these lines. We have been there twice in 2015 and will return for sure. The former barn has been converted to a high standard and makes you feel welcome the moment you approach it through the garden and all the more when you enter the property through the front door. It is furnished and fitted out with great love and care – stylish indeed. And be sure Sophie will decorate according to the season. Oh yes, Sophie’s welcome-cakes are a treat! All the places of interest are within easy reach and the village of Benenden should have been a location in Midsomer Murders.
