About Richard Mayle
Richard & Sue own La Treille. Having lived in the South East of England all our lives, we were looking for a slower pace of life in a more rural setting. We looked at many properties over a number of years before we visited "La Treille" and we were blown away with the stunning setting. So many of our guests have come back to stay for three to four years in succession as they have found the setting to be so peaceful.
Richard Mayle purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Richard Mayle chose La Caillère-St-Hilaire
La Caillere is located in the Southern area of the Vendee, an area of rolling countryside dotted with lakes and forests. Our home is at the edge of a village in a semi-rural location. Plenty of things to do and see for the more active, but peaceful and relaxing if that is what you prefer. We are lucky enough to own a fabulous period property (dating back to Napoleonic times) with huge character and a superb two and a half acre garden. A perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunshine! Access from the UK is easy, with regular flights from several UK airports to Nantes (1 hour), La Rochelle (1 hour) and Poitiers (90 minutes). Driving is easy too, (much easier than in the UK) with ferry crossings to Caen, Cherbourg, Le Harve, Dieppe, Calais and don't forget the Euro Tunnel.
What makes this Cottage unique
Whilst viewing potential properties to buy over a number of years, we were struck by the poor accommodation offered by many of the holiday cottages/gites. We looked at providing holiday accommodation that we would be happy to stay in ourselves and this has resulted in two gites of a very high quality and standard. We have had many guests that return year after year. Most tend to book within a week or two of leaving us!

A lovely family holiday
This was our first trip to this area of France. The accommodation was lovely with well kept grounds and a pool area my family really enjoyed. The location offered us an opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside and towns and made for a thoroughly enjoyable trip. We hope to return here sometime in the future.
Lovely stay in a great setting
Well this place is a little gem. The Gite was lovely and decorated to a high standard with everything you need for your stay. Sue and Richard were very helpful and friendly and Barney and Rubble were welcome visitors every day. Thanks you for a lovely week!
Lavender & Rosemary
Beautiful property in a glorious garden. Our hosts, Sue, Richard, Barney and Rubble made us very welcome and looked after us without intruding at all.
Stunning property and gardens
We spent a wonderfully relaxing time at La Treille. The weather was fabulous and there are so many things to do in the area. Puy de Fou [an absolute must for children] is spectacular, then there is the water park, Marais Poitevin, Vouvant etc etc.
The gite is delightful. Clean, well appointed and very comfortable. And the gardens and beautiful.
Well worth a visit!! I'm sure we will be back.
Many thanks for your kind words. Sue & I hope you enjoyed your stay and you would be welcome back at any time in the future.
We hope to see you all again soon.
Lovely gite, lovely hosts, beautiful setting
Our fourth visit (at least) to this gite. We love it for the space, the clean. unfussy and comfortable decor and layout, and our hosts, who live in the main house and are there to help whenever you need them but maintain that great balance between being interested and friendly but not crowding. And who can forget Barney & Rubble, labradors - handsome, friendly and very well behaved. We like to explore, and La Treille is brilliantly located for visiting everyting the Vendee has to offer. Then it's back to La Treille for a dip in the pool to cool off at the end of the day. We will definitely be back again!
Many thanks for your kind words. It has always been a pleasure to have you and Andy as guests over the years............I'm not sure, but I reckon it 5 visits!! If not, it will be by the end of 2018!!
We look forward to seeing you next October with your friends and possibly Maddy too?
Richard and Sue
We had a fantastic week in this lovely, spacious gite. It is tasteful, clean, well-equipped and practical - and the beds and sofas are really comfortable! Outside, the garden is just gorgeous with pots of flowers everywhere and scented lavender beside the (very clean) swimming pool and tennis court. The owners, Sue and Richard, are excellent hosts - welcoming and very helpful. Our teenage children were equally delighted with the facilities (and the dogs)!
There is plenty to do within an hour's drive or so. The French do theme parks very well, and Puy du Fou (40 minutes away) is no exception (check out their website) - well worth the entrance fee. We have visited Futuroscope in the past - also excellent. Otherwise, the area has no shortage of castles and pretty French towns and villages. The castle at Tiffauges is worth a visit with its "living history" shows and demonstrations of medieval weaponry, imaginative 3D film about the infamous lord who once lived there, and a medieval-themed play area for younger children. We also enjoyed hiring a boat on the Marais Poitevin (from the Abbey at Maillezais) - very pleasant on a hot day.
Our Flybe flights from Manchester to La Rochelle worked out well, and the car hire (Europcar La Rochelle) was uncomplicated and efficient.
Many thanks for taking the time to submit such a lovely review of our gite. It is greatly appreciated...........you can come and stay again!!
I hope you are all well and are not too depressed at being back in the routine.
If you feel you would like to come back, please do not hesitate to call or email me.
Hope to hear from you soon and please pass our regards to Tom, Laura & Patrick.
We are less than an hour from coast with the resorts of La Tranche sur Mer and La Faute which look across to Ile de Re and offer sheltered swimming, sailing and windsurfing facilities.
It is possible to walk along these fabulous, sandy beaches for miles without interruption.
A lakeside beach at Mervent is just a 15 minute drive away.
Les Sable D'Olonne and La Rochelle are also within an hours' drive.
Approximate travel times

La Caillere (4kms) is a large village with a range of shops consisting of a small well stocked supermarket, boulangerie, boucherie (superb meat!) poissonerie (weekends only), pharmacies, banks, bar/tabac, petrol station and restaurant (the owners are regulars and recommend it!!).
The larger town of Chantonnay is just 10 minutes drive, with 2 hyper markets, banks, restaurants
There are many fantastic places to visit within easy reach.
Close to us, there is the Tower of Bazoges en Pareds, the Museum of the Two Victories Clemenceau-de Lattre at Mouilleron en Pareds, the Mining Centre at Faymoreau, the abbeys at Nieul sur l’Autise and Maillezais, the Forest of Mervent- Vouvant.
you can visit nearby Fontenay-le-Comte with its ancient streets of Renaissance houses and the vast Mervent-Vouvant forest to name just a few.
Vouvant is 15 minutes away - this medieval town is recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France with it's medieval ramparts, cobbled streets and pretty houses. The town is well known as a village of painters and there are arts and crafts shops as well as some lovely cafes and restaurants.
There are many historical places of interest and great theme parks at Puy-du-Fou (45min) and Futuroscope (90min). There are also many towns and cities to explore (about an hour by car) – La Rochelle, Nantes, Niort, Cholet, La Roche sur Yon (45 mins), Poitiers (90 mins).
The Grand Parc du Puy du Fou (around an hour) provides a great day out for the family.
An enormous network of clearly marked footpaths lead from La Treille & Old Garlands - you can go for a stroll or ramble for hours; an American-style riding stable is close by, which offers lessons or accompanied rides through the woods for adults and children; The forest of Mervent with it's mountain bike centre is 20 minutes away; the 127 hectare lac Rocherau is nearby with fishing, boating and a beach. The seemingly endless sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are about an hour distant where you can take advantage of the Vendée's wonderful climate.
And for the more culturally minded, the numerous châteaux of the Loire, local museums and galleries are waiting to be explored.
