Our love affair with Les Milandes dates back to 2001 when we came here to stay. The following year we were lucky enough to become the new owners. To us, it is a very special place both for the beauty of the Dordogne area and also for its feeling of timelessness, tranquillity and well-being.
Over the years we have sympathetically refurbished and improved the four properties which make up Les Milandes. One of the biggest projects that we have undertaken was the complete renovation of Maison de Gardien (a former gatekeeper's cottage) in 2007.
We visit Les Milandes at least once a year (more frequently if work permits) and have many very happy memories here. For us, it really is a home from home.
This part of the world is truly stunning. All around is beautiful countryside, amazing architecture and of course, fantastic food and drink. Luckily, you can also indulge in a wide range of outdoor activities, ideal for burning off the additional calories. We are obviously biased, but it really is a great destination whatever your age.
We hope that you will come and stay at Les Milandes and enjoy your time here as much as we still do.
The views over the Dordogne are amazing and the Chateau des Milandes forms a spectacular backdrop.
Special interest holidays:
There are many varied activities which are easily accessible and everybody will find something to do that they enjoy! These include canoeing, fishing and swimming on the river, hot air ballooning, visiting markets and vineyards, picnicking, searching for antiques, cycling, eating, walking, golf at several courses, tennis, tree walking and horseriding. Sarlat has many free attractions including street theatre performers, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, concerts and exhibitions.
The food of the region is world renowned as the home of foie gras, truffles, confits and Perigourdine specialities and there are many restaurants where you can enjoy excellent food and wines. You can also buy many of the ingredients if you are self catering at the numerous lively and colourful markets.
There are several beaches along the river allowing swimming, fishing and canoeing. The river is accessible at the bottom of a short hill down from the houses and the Park des Milandes has its own access to the river as well as tennis court, swimming pool and mini golf.
Les Milandes is under an hour from Bergerac Airport and approximately two hours from both Bordeaux and Toulouse. Some of the best vineyards in the world lie within a two hour drive at St Emilion and a little further west lie the classic vineyards of the Medoc incl Margaux, Pauillac and St Julien . Nearer to home are the more regional and affordable wines of Bergerac, Monbazillac and Cahors. The Bergerac vineyards of Pecharment are under an hour away, and are producing some excellent reds.

Our nearest village on the river with beach which has a very good little cafe/brasserie with outside terrace, butcher, baker, small supermarket and canoe rental. Overlooked by a magnificent Medieval Chateau which was occupied by the English during the Hundred Year’s war with museum of medieval weaponry which boys of all ages will love!
The village rises dramatically from the valley floor through narrow medieval streets to the Magnificent Chateau perched high on the cliffs with stunning views of the river and surrounding countryside. A good selection of shops, galleries/antiques restaurants and hotels and a great canoe stop.
One of the “plus belles villages de France” the village again rises from the valley floor rising up a magnificent rock face floodlit at night.Church, boat excursions, Chateau and a good choice of restaurants and shops.
One of the best preserved hilltop bastide towns with possibly the best view in the Dordogne and entered through one of three 13th century gateways. Truly beautiful, you stroll through streets unchanged over the centuries with rose fronted cottages and pretty squares where you can sit and watch the world go by.
Is our nearest town with the amenities that you would expect such as supermarkets, doctors, garages, maison de la presse and a wonderful market on Sunday. It has several cafes, some of which are worth a visit to step back in time as well as an excellent producer of foie gras, confit, rillettes and more local products.
Is capital of the Perigord Noir and stunning. It has been immaculately restored and you can wander through beautiful Medieval streets among fifteenth and sixteenth century houses constructed in mellow honey coloured stone and imagine you’ve been transported back in time. Enjoy a coffee or drink in the main square or visit one of the many contemporary shops.
