Overview

About the property

Gite des Forges in Angles, Nr. La Tranche sur Mer, Vendee - Quiet Location, Close To Shops, Bars & Restaurants

Gite des Forges dates back to the 19th Century, when it formed part of a larger agricultural group of buildings. The current owner has had the building completely renovated to a high standard and it is now presented as a sunny 2 bedroom holiday home, complete with courtyard garden and private parking.

The house is set in a quiet side street, within walking distance of the centre of Angles - a bustling town with a weekly market and lots of fetes and festivals throughout the summer. This is a great base for exploring the Vendee - with its many beaches, castles, wetlands, forests and tourist attractions. The area can be explored on foot or bicycle - with many signposted routes starting nearby.

Inside there is a compact living/dining/kitchen area with a TV (with UK Free-to-air satellite channels), DVD player and Wi-Fi internet access. The kitchen has an electric oven, induction hob, microwave and large fridge/freezer. The washing machine is in the shower room.

There are two bedrooms – one with a double bed and one with three single beds.

Outside there is a gravel courtyard with dining table and chairs, barbecue and sun loungers. There is also a grassy area to play on.

The house is suitable for families and guests with limited mobility, and is set all on one floor.

Why Annette Khan chose La-Roche-sur-Yon area

Gite des Forges is owned by Rebecca, who currently lives in America. She has owned this house for several years, and has had the house renovated from an old farm building into a lovely bright and airy holiday home, which is now managed by Annette & Jason who live within 20 minutes of the house, so are always on hand to help out should the need arise.

We fell in love with the little town of Angles and bought what was at the time a very rundown farm building in a side street near the town centre. After spending several summer holidays 'camping out' in our house, we decided to start some renovation work. The house is now unrecognisable from its original state and is a very comfortable 2 bedroom holiday home! We have plans to extend it in the future, but not yet.

What makes this house unique

The area is ideal for us - we love exploring the local markets, and walking on the long beaches. The town holds lots of summer festivals, where all of the central streets are cordoned off, and market stalls take over and with entertainment long into the evening. We have made many friends in the area and love to come and visit.

The house is within walking distance of the centre of the town - which has a couple of bakeries, a small grocery store, a fish mongers, butchers, hairdressers and several restaurants and bars. Not forgetting the wine cellar that is next door!! here you can buy local wines - either by the bottle or in boxes. The owner is always keen to let you try before you buy and you can often find some great bargains if you know what to look for!

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: - An English speaking representative lives in the area and is there to help with and queries or information that you need during your stay. - Some pets may be accepted, please ask - This is a no smoking house, smoking is only permitted in the garden outside. Outside: The garden to this house faces the sun all day, so is a great place for sunbathing or relaxing with a glass of wine after a long day of site seeing! There is a patio table and chairs as well as several fold up sun loungers. A charcoal barbecue is also available. Part of the outside space is laid to lawn and flower borders, and the rest is a gravel courtyard, with gated access for parking your car off-road. A side area of the garden is cordoned off, as the owners have laid the foundations for an extension to the house, but this is not planned to be finished for a couple of years, and in no way interferes with the enjoyment of the rest of the garden. All bed linens are provided during your stay, but please bring your own towels (tea, hand, bath and beach). The house will be clean and tidy for your arrival and it is expected that it is left in the same good condition.

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time. Angles is a busy little town but extremely quiet. You needn't walk more than 400m all the time you are there.

Use the local shops and market on Sun & Weds.

La Tranche is about 15 mins by car. The sandy/surfing beaches are 20 mins away by car. Just a bit too far by bike for us with all the kit but not impossible. Les Conches or Le Rocher.

The gite is modern inside with everything you will need. We loved it.

There are plenty of things to do within a short drive on wet days.

The Puy du Fou is brilliant. An hour or so's drive but you will be talking about it years after. Get there early. If you stay for the night show you will need good French or reserve headphones. Book in advance to avoid the queues.

Go to La Rochelle for the day. An hour's very boring drive or go by boat from La Tranche (Inter Iles timetable).

If by car - Aim for Vieux Port and Park under ground in Place de Verdun.

If you spend the week on the beach ...

Above all - swim between the flags !

Vendee relaxing seaside holiday at Angles for all.

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed two weeks at Gites des Forges in the brilliant Vendee sunshine. Angles we have got to know quite well since our first visit in 1993 and we have been returning to the La Tranche area since. The cottage was all it was advertised to be, comfortable, clean well equipped and spacious. The courtyard and garden beyond was excellent to relax in and the Cave, next door was an added bonus. The village shops and patisserie in particular is only a short walk and just right for the children to practice their French when buying Le petit dejeuner. One is immediately part of the French community with so much happening on a weekly basis - markets, concerts, exhibitions in the tourist centre, puppet show, circus and a street dance all happening whilst we were there. We enjoyed the choice of restaurants within walking distance and of course the seaside beyond. I would certainly recommend the property as a centre from which to tour the Vendee and enjoy the culture on the doorstep. An excellent property in every way.

Nice place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Gites Des Forges is a small, but perfectly formed, 2 bedroom gite. You can get more details from their website about where it is and what it looks like. We found it in good clean condition, well furnished and well equipped. It was great having wifi and satellite TV showing English channels, and the kitchen had good modern cooker, fridge, cupboards etc.

The double bed has a footboard and is too short for anyone over 6 feet or so. I am 6' 3" and it was somewhat uncomfortable.

Next door is a delightful cellar selling local wine (take your own bottle, it costs about 1.5 euros to fill) or some good quality French wines at what seemed to me to be good prices.

La Tranche is 10 mins drive away, and the Super U supermarket is ridiculously crowded. The local Intermarche was fine for our purposes.

We ended up spending most beach time at Le Terriere, where there was regularly good surf for bodyboarding and surfing for non-experts.

Gites Des Forges was a big success for us, and we recommend it. Very reasonably priced, and it made for a very enjoyable holiday.

The perfect place for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

The Gites des forges is ideal for a family holiday. Its near the coast but avoids the noise . The location near shops and restaurants is ideal and quiet at night. The markets in the village are recommended. The facilities are good ( though not exceptional) especially the well equipped kitchen. The outside seating area was very relaxing and off street parking very helpful. Being next door to a wine cave is a bonus! The garden could do with development to make it a more attractive space and the area earmarked for an extension but not finished is a bit of an eyesore. The amenities and house information booklet lacks detail especially about rubbish collection. That said the Gite does have a very nice relaxed feel to it and feels quite tropical in the sunshine we highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: We're glad that you enjoyed your stay here is Angles in the Vendee. I have passed on your comments about the rubbish and garden views. The owner is over in October, so will be improving the garden then. The town is a very nice location for holidays as there is so much to do nearby - and, as you say, it is very handy having a wine cave next door!

Coast/Beach:

The Vendee area is famous for its miles of sandy beaches and the closest beach - Les Conches - is only a 10 minute drive away. This beach is great for surfing and body boarding as it has good waves rolling in off of the Atlantic. There are also good beaches for rock pooling, building sand castles and sunbathing. Most beaches have life guards on duty during the summer, and many have lots of entertainment laid on - with shows and firework displays.

Travel:

The town of Angles is only 60 minutes to La Rochelle airport or 70 minutes to Nantes airport. Both of these are served by budget airlines such as Ryanair, Jet2, EasyJet and Flybe and car hire is available at both.

For those wishing to drive, the northern ferry ports of France start from as little as 3.5hours away - with St Malo being the closest, then Caen (4.5h), Cherbourg (5.5h) and then the Eurotunnel at Calais (6.5h). We can offer a 10% discount code for travel with Brittany Ferries.

Distances:

The seaside resorts of La Tranche sur Mer and La Faute sur Mer are only 10 to 15 minutes’ drive away, and here you will find lots of interesting things to do - both have excellent beaches, lots of bars and restaurants, and some of the best ice cream in the area! Such a choice of flavours!

Many of the surrounding villages hold weekly markets, where you will find lots of locally produced foods - sausages, cheese, breads and wine, as well as some very freshly caught seafood.

Further Details:

Further afield, the Vendee has a lot more to offer! The fantastic Puy du Fou historical theme park is just over an hour away - and here you will be entertained by Vikings, Romans, Musketeers, Medieval knights and you will see the best bird of prey show, I have ever come across. In the evening there is an amazing Light and sound show set with a backdrop of a lake and ruined chateau - not to be missed!

For a more tranquil day out, the Marais Poitevin canal network is ideal - there are miles of canals and you can hire a boat, or get a guide to punt you around, seeing much of the local flora and fauna from the waterside. There are many pretty villages on route, some with ruined abbeys and an interesting history. In summer there are several medieval fetes held in the abbeys, with re-enactments and music into the evening.

The Old Port of La Rochelle is well worth a visit - with its harbour-side restaurants and cafes and evening street entertainment. There is a very good aquarium in town, along with a massive market hall and lots of music festivals throughout spring and summer - not to mention the many arcaded renaissance shopping streets! A great day out!

Close to La Rochelle is the Ile de Ré - with its impressive bridge from the mainland. On the island, the old town of La Flotte has a daily market and lots of winding streets to explore and the capital town of St Martins is a great location for a seafood lunch - sitting on the quayside, watching all the sailing boats heading out to sea.

Closer to Angles, there are many other tourist attractions, such as the Indian Forest Adventure Park, where you can swing through the trees on zip wires, play crazy golf, take a pony ride or play on the water slides. The Chateau des Aventuriers is only 15 minutes away and here you can follow the treasure trail around the lovely gardens or walk around the extended park to see some dolmans.

The main attraction for the Vendee though, has to be the beaches - they are all long & sandy and great fun!
