A C18th former stable, carthouse with haylofts, converted with local materials to an elegant holiday house. Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Carthouse is in a former C18th farmyard. You could see a buzzard and deer on your way up to Eggardon Hillfort and from its ramparts Lyme Bay can be seen. Enclosed garden with a barbecue, lawn for ball games and adjoining Studio you can play table tennis. You can see on a clear night the stars or sit in a deck chair on the veranda with a refreshing drink. Solar panels supply hot water, boosted by a large log boiler, which also provides underfloor heating; padding about in bare feet is a pleasure!

About Barrie Meller
I am interested in finding uses for the older buildings on the farm, using our own timber as much as possible. We have have tried to use good materials. As you will see the yard is stacked with timber drying for future projects. I hope visitors learn a little about the surroundings while relaxing on holiday.

Absolutely amazing place!
14 of us had a wonderful stay here for 5 nights. Barrie was very accommodating - allowing us to bring an extra person to sleep on a camp bed, and helping us when we encountered a few problems in the kitchen. The place is remote but surrounded by beautiful landscape and just a short drive from the supermarket, beach etc. All in all it was the perfect place for us to relax and have fun after a stressful exam period. We would all definitely come back.
From the youngest 5 year old cousins to the eldest octogenarian , all 10 of us had a fabulous stay. If you don’t mind the drive down miles of country lanes then you are rewarded with cosy beds, fluffy towels fully equipped kitchen and a real country life experience.
Rural and rustic hideaway
North Eggardon Carthouse is part of a yard of farm buildings set below a bowl of lovely hills including Eggardon Hill Fort. The carthouse was warm, comfortable and ideal for a family group of 11. The two largest bedrooms were huge and ideal for boys and girls dormitories. There is a creative use of wood everywhere: and the Aga, woodburner and underfloor heating were fuelled by wood as well. The utility with washing machines was useful and the children enjoyed the table tennis room. The coast was about 20 minutes away with a variety of lovely walks. Victor (the owner) gave us a warm welcome and looked after us unobtrusively throughout our stay.
A very special find indeed
What an incredible property. Açcommodated our three families perfectly - with lots of options for how to arrange ourselves. The property itself is stunning. Characterful, comfortable and with everything you need for a family break. The bedrooms were quite jawdropping. Incredibly spacious and beautiful in their simplicity - with far-reaching views and skylights that made a virtue of the heavy rain. We had been worried about the property being cold given its sheer size but it was perfectly warm in all parts thanks to the underfloor heating - and made cosier still by the wood burner in the sitting room. Catering for us all was also made easy with a large fridge and walk-in larder plus a separate additional fridge and freezer in the utility space. The kids loved playing ping pong in the games room - also good for working out or doing yoga in. Gorgeous garden (which we didn't get to use due to the rain). The massive kitchen table allowed us all to gather comfortably for meals and to play games. Aside from ticking all the boxes ion a practical level, The Carthouse simply has something special about it that will draw us back time after time for family get together soon and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to other guests looking for a peaceful slice of rural Dorset in full comfort.
