About anne parker

We first visited The Lake District separately as children. Many years later on Honeymoon in the Lakes, we made a promise to ourselves to own our own cottage before our 25th Anniversary. We kept our promise and purchased The Retreat just in time for our 25th Anniversary.

After much thought, effort, love and money we have now renovated the 150 year old former cattle shed into a luxury holiday retreat for ourselves and guests to enjoy.

Why anne parker chose Bowness-on-Windermere

It was love at first sight when we saw the cottage. From the quirky upside down layout to the beautiful tranquil setting. We knew instantly it was the one for us. We have spent much time love and money transforming the cottage to what we now feel is the perfect retreat for ourselves and our guests. Each season at The Retreat is magical from crisp cold days snuggled in by the log burner to summer evenings spent in the garden watching the sun set over Claiffe Heights. Enjoy a summer evening barbeque in the courtyard garden furninshed with a local slate bench and good quality table and chairs.

What makes this cottage unique

We have lovingly renovated the cottage, working closely with local tradesmen to ensure it's Lakeland character was retained. We took the opportunity to add extra features to give the Retreat it's uniqueness and special feel.

New for summer 2017 - A raised deck to the side garden allows our guests to enjoy views over the lake.

Beautiful cottage in a fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

We stay in self catering cottages 2-3 times a year and this is by far one of the best we have rented. Fitted out to a really high standard, modern but still very cosy. The location was perfect-close to Bowness (with a fairly steep walk back to the cottage to burn off the ice creams, fudge and local beer!!). The outside terrace has great views-even in November, it was good to spend time out there. We definitely hope to return.

A cosy and well located cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very well appointed, had everything we needed. The location a short walk from Bowness has a good choice of restaurants for an evening meal and is easy for access to the south lakes for walking during the day. We had a very enjoyable holiday.

Beautiful cottage in a wonderful location

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely 4 night stay here for a few days of the Autumn half term. There are 4 of us - me, my wife, my 14 year old son and my 9 year old daughter.

The cottage is in superb condition and extremely well fitted out. The view from the garden of Lake Windermere is a real bonus too! As it was wet (October in The Lakes!), we didn't sit out in the garden but anyone coming during spring or summer would be able to have their meals there - wonderful opportunity.

You can walk the round of Bowness/end of the Dales Way from the cottage (we did a very pleasant 4-5 mile circuit) and the village centre is a short (but steep!) walk away.

I would have awarded 5 stars. However, we weren't keen on the parking - it's a good few yards down a very tight lane. We ended up parking out in the street as I nearly pranged the car. If you're a confident parker (which neither of us are) it shouldn't be any problem and I would highly recommend the cottage.

Owner's Response: It’s nice to read you and your family have had an enjoyable time at The Retreat. Hopefully next time the weather will be better and you can enjoy the sun deck. We love the Lakes for family time and whilst the weather in Autumn can be mixed, the colours are absolutely beautiful. We’re pleased you found many of the walks direct from door, it’s a nice way to enjoy your day. Sorry to hear you struggled with the parking, it is a long drive and best to drive in and reverse out. Private parking is a premium in The Lakes. Many thanks for your lovely review. We are pleased you and your family had a wonderful time.

Restful and Quiet Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is well-appointed, cosy and comfortable. The charm of the cottage has been retained following a thoughtful and discrete modernisation, which has been done to a high standard. Although when we stayed the weather was getting cool, the heating was superb and we were kept comfortably warm at night. We stayed to catch up with an old friend and the cottage made the reunion particularly enjoyable. Our only regret was that time went too quickly before having to leave.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your nice comments. We do our very best to ensure the cottage is maintained to a high standard for our guests. It’s lovely to read you had a nice stay, despite the cooler weather. Time is never long enough when relaxing with friends, but it’s good to hear the cottage provided a tranquil setting for you all to enjoy. We appreciate The Lakes is a long way from the other side of the world, but hopefully if you do have chance to return, you will be able to enjoy the sun deck a little more.

Best experience ever! This is the one!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is at the end of the road up a small hill from the village. About a 4-5 minute walk. Beyond the cottage were beautiful views of grassy hills and from the side garden deck a partial view of the lake. Coming from Canada, the cottage was so charming and everything we wanted and more. It has recently been renovated and I can assure you that it was done in a very high quality with every attention to detail. The cottage was just perfect. Location in the Lake District for people who are not familiar - Bowness is the best village on the shores of the lake. We did some drives around the lake and stopped at other villages but none of them had the same appeal of Bowness. This is definitely the best spot. Communications with the hosts were always timely, friendly, accommodating and a pleasure to communicate with. They were also very kind to email some information and suggestions of things to do in the area which was very helpful to get us started. One last thing, upon arrival we were greeted with a container of milk in the fridge so we could have coffee/tea and a lovely welcome gift of a chocolate cake. Also fresh flowers in the house. As I mentioned before, attention to detail was everywhere. Thank you so much Anne for an amazing stay in an amazing cottage. Kindest of regards to you. David from Canada

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words. We are always thrilled to hear our guests have had a great time in the Lakes at our cottage. We work hard and focus on the detail because good accommodation in the right location is key to a great holiday. Time out with family and friends is important to you and to equally to us. It's means a lot to us when our efforts are appreciated and it's great to read you enjoyed the Lakes, especially coming from Canada. Hopefully the weather held out to allow you to use the new sun deck. We've now planted the last few plants in the garden and added a little interest to bemuse guests. Thanks again for your great feedback. Enjoy the rest of your travels, we hope one day if you'r back in the UK you will visit again. Many thanks.
