About anne parker

We first visited The Lake District separately as children. Many years later on Honeymoon in the Lakes, we made a promise to ourselves to own our own cottage before our 25th Anniversary. We kept our promise and purchased The Retreat just in time for our 25th Anniversary.

After much thought, effort, love and money we have now renovated the 150 year old former cattle shed into a luxury holiday retreat for ourselves and guests to enjoy.

anne parker purchased this cottage in 2013

Why anne parker chose Windermere & Central Lakes

It was love at first sight when we saw the cottage. From the quirky upside down layout to the beautiful tranquil setting. We knew instantly it was the one for us. We have spent much time love and money transforming the cottage to what we now feel is the perfect retreat for ourselves and our guests. Each season at The Retreat is magical from crisp cold days snuggled in by the log burner to summer evenings spent in the garden watching the sun set over Claiffe Heights. Enjoy a summer evening barbeque in the courtyard garden furninshed with a local slate bench and good quality table and chairs.

What makes this cottage unique

We have lovingly renovated the cottage, working closely with local tradesmen to ensure it's Lakeland character was retained. We took the opportunity to add extra features to give the Retreat it's uniqueness and special feel.

New for summer 2017 - A raised deck to the side garden allows our guests to enjoy views over the lake.

This Cottage was absolutely perfect. Everything was decorated so tastefully and it was very clean. The neighborhood is very quiet and it was so convenient to the village. I would definitely recommend this beautiful place to family and friends.

Best experience ever! This is the one!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is at the end of the road up a small hill from the village. About a 4-5 minute walk. Beyond the cottage were beautiful views of grassy hills and from the side garden deck a partial view of the lake. Coming from Canada, the cottage was so charming and everything we wanted and more. It has recently been renovated and I can assure you that it was done in a very high quality with every attention to detail. The cottage was just perfect. Location in the Lake District for people who are not familiar - Bowness is the best village on the shores of the lake. We did some drives around the lake and stopped at other villages but none of them had the same appeal of Bowness. This is definitely the best spot. Communications with the hosts were always timely, friendly, accommodating and a pleasure to communicate with. They were also very kind to email some information and suggestions of things to do in the area which was very helpful to get us started. One last thing, upon arrival we were greeted with a container of milk in the fridge so we could have coffee/tea and a lovely welcome gift of a chocolate cake. Also fresh flowers in the house. As I mentioned before, attention to detail was everywhere. Thank you so much Anne for an amazing stay in an amazing cottage. Kindest of regards to you. David from Canada

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words. We are always thrilled to hear our guests have had a great time in the Lakes at our cottage. We work hard and focus on the detail because good accommodation in the right location is key to a great holiday. Time out with family and friends is important to you and to equally to us. It's means a lot to us when our efforts are appreciated and it's great to read you enjoyed the Lakes, especially coming from Canada. Hopefully the weather held out to allow you to use the new sun deck. We've now planted the last few plants in the garden and added a little interest to bemuse guests. Thanks again for your great feedback. Enjoy the rest of your travels, we hope one day if you'r back in the UK you will visit again. Many thanks.

Our family, including three small children, enjoyed a week at this beautiful place. From the very beginning Anne was very helpful with tips and hints on where to go and what to visit. The house then offered everything we needed, was very clean and we felt very comfortable and enjoyed the time a lot. Thanks for everything!

Four of us stayed for a week in Bowness and thoroughly enjoyed everything this cottage had to offer, especially the timber deck in the garden where we had breakfast and then drinks at the end of the day. Easily accessible to Bowness with a bit of an uphill walk to the cottage after exploring the wonderful Lakes District. Very clean accommodation and comfortable beds. Would highly recommend. Thank you Anne and Robert for allowing us to rent this charming cottage.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely comments, we always like to hear our guests have had a great stay in the Lake District and that our cottage has added to your enjoyment. We are really pleased you enjoyed the new sun deck, we have just recently finished it and it's nice to read you enjoyed both breakfast and evening drinks in the garden looking out to the lake. The Lakes has so much to offer in terms of scenery and things to do for all the family, it's important to us our guests have a clean and comfortable place to stay in a good location that's both accessible to the attractions, yet offers a little peace and tranquility. We're pleased you found the cottage to be well placed to make the most of your break. We hope you enjoy the rest of your time in the UK and the sun continues to shine for you.

So near yet so removed.

The Retreat, is just that, away from the crowds, quiet, picturesque and just right. The beds were comfy and the linens very nice. All of the Lake District is at your doorstep. We hiked like mad but also toured Blackwell House, a real treasure, Abbot House and the Lakeside Industry Museum, not too thrilling. Loved the Motorcar Museum and of all things, the Bobbin Museum was extremely interesting and educational, learned lots of "nickel knowledge". If you are looking for a place to stay, this is a winner. The driveway is a challenge for certain but the outside space more than makes up for it. We loved sipping drinks overlooking the lake. Many thanks Ann.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your nice words, we always enjoy reading our guests have enjoyed their stay and have explored the many things to do locally. We too love the peace and tranquility of the cottage, yet the easy stroll to the hustle and bustle and ammenities of the village. Parking is always a bonus, the lack of turning is not ideal but we're glad you managed. It's nice you were able to make use of the new sun deck, looking out towards the lake as you enjoyed a well earned drink after your many miles walking. We now have wifi so guests can keep in touch with friends, or if like me, to check the weather in preparation for the next days adventure. Thanks again for your nice comments. We look forward to welcoming you back.

A gem tucked away in a quite part of Bowness with great access to the town and the nearby fells.

We spent a wonderful few days in this lovely cottage with our 4 year old granddaughter. We were greeted by cake, fresh flowers and milk in the fridge on our arrival which were much appreciated. 'The Retreat' is very comfortable, stylishly furnished and is equipped with everything you could possibly need for your holiday. The 'upside down' layout of the cottage works very well; the open plan living/dining area is great for relaxing in and the tasteful kitchen is perfect for preparing meals whilst chatting to everybody! The 2 bedrooms downstairs are very comfortable and furnished well with lovely decor.

The roof lights in the cottage allow you to see a wonderful view of Lake Windermere in the distance as does the little garden, which is a lovely place to sit and is very popular with numerous wild birds. Our granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed her first stay in the Lake District, especially our trip to see Beatrix Potter's house at Hill Top and also 'The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction' in the town. We enjoyed leisurely walks down the hill into Bowness to browse around the shops and a couple of treks up Brantfell to enjoy the spectacular views at the top.

The cottage is a great base to tour around the lakes or to enjoy the many attractions on its doorstep. Our granddaughter wants to stay again at 'The Retreat' and I'm sure it won't be long before we are back! Thanks Anne and Robert for your friendly and efficient handling of our booking for your beautiful cottage.
