A spacious apartment in a grand Victorian villa: beautifully appointed; close to shops, pubs, restaurants; free parking
About Rob Day
We have always dreamed of owning a place by the sea in this part of Kent, since visiting from London when we were kids. We wanted to find somewhere by the sea, away from crowds and traffic, but without sacrificing creature comforts. We love the peace, space and the amazing light on the beach outside but also the award-winning independent shops and restaurants in and around Deal. We spend as much time as possible at the property but will always do our best to accommodate guest bookings and do not "black out" any dates. We hope you love it here as much as we do!

Why Rob Day chose Deal
We think Deal and Walmer offer the perfect combination of traditional British seaside atmosphere, unspoilt and historic architecture, and miles of clean and often deserted beaches. Walmer is the quiet and leafy end of town with an incredible sense of peace and space on the beach, which is often completely empty even in August. Our dog appreciates the canine company to be found out walking along the coast path. We love to cook and eat out: there is a market, superb independent butchers and fishmongers, delicatessen, independent wine merchants and a large Sainsburys all close by. At least five chippies, countless cafes, and a long list of quality independent pubs and restaurants for all budgets.
What makes this Apartment unique
The apartment is roomy and spacious. Parking is free and easy even in high season. Everything is within walking distance - whether you want to visit the castles, eat out, buy supplies or head up the cliffs towards Dover.

Beautiful apartment, tastefully decorated in a superb location. En-suite was a massive bonus and very cleverly added to the master bedroom. Very reasonably priced and communication from three owner great. Would definitely recommend and would stay again.
The location was quiet and the rooms relatively spacious. The housekeeper could not meet us to show us around, and we had to pick up the key at a liquor store nearby. The rooms smelled closed up and musty when we entered, although they were clean. There were lightbulbs out and incorrect bags for compost, etc. When we emailed the housekeeper an hour after our arrival, it took her two days to get back to us, telling us she was on vacation. We could lock up and leave the key at the liquor store when we left.
Great, though some things to be aware of
The apartment has lovely decor and is well furnished. Spacious and well-equipped with kitchen stuff. The area is very nice, being quiet and just a minute walk to the pebble beach. Wifi is good, and there's Now TV Entertainment and Cinema (not Sports). Some sweet touches, such as a bespoke Ordnance Survey map, showing the area centred on Walmer.
I was concerned whether street parking would be a problem, but there is loads, just outside. We never had to park more than about 3 car lengths away and that was in mid-August.
There are a few things to be aware of, so you can judge whether they are issues for you:
The beds are 'double' size (4ft6). The listing says so, but I missed this, as I assumed a place like this would have king size beds. I found them uncomfortable. The beds are also quite noisy when you move on them.
The ensuite bathroom has no door. It is tucked round a corner, so there's some visual privacy if this matters to you, but noise still travels to the rest of the bedroom. In practice, this makes the toilet unusable if the bedroom is occupied, unless you really don't care about hearing your partner answering the call of nature.
The ensuite sink is also in practice unusable, due to draining so slowly that whatever you are trying to wash away just floats and coats the basin. Rob was very responsive in sorting a plumber to fix this, but it made no difference at all, so I think it is just dodgy plumbing (it is an old building). The shower is, however, great.
The bath in the other bathroom has a nice shower, but the curtain does not prevent water flowing down the back and onto the floor. For baths, it was great.
The windows are single-glazed and poorly fitting. This lets in a lot of noise from outside, though it is such a quiet area that this is rarely a problem. It does, however, let quite a breeze through, when it is windy: enough to make the blinds wave around. Not a problem in the summer, but in winter I would think this could mean the heating will struggle to keep the rooms warm.
The floor is completely impractical. Bare wood, which stains if water isn't wiped away immediately. It looks lovely, but you are regularly mopping after dogs/kids.
Like many holiday homes, it seems strangely lacking in a few things that are minor but could so easily be sorted. The toilet roll holder is broken. The window fasteners are missing bits. There's no lock on the main bathroom door.
Cleaning seemed a bit patchy.
Thanks for your detailed review Jacqueline - we are glad that you had a good time and liked so many things about the apartment. We do just want to point out that the ensuite sink has been fixed - apologies if the first attempt was not adequate. The shower curtain in the bathroom also works perfectly well if you tuck it inside the bath! Finally we can assure you that the flat is lovely and cosy in the winter - see many positive reviews confirming this from previous years. Rob & Jacquie
A fabulous property in a lovely location. Everything we needed. The only thing missing was a couple of egg cups!
Hi Frances - glad you had fun....we'll get some eggcups!
No garden attached to property
Very stressful stay. we rented this property as it stated it had a shared secure garden- what it didn’t say was that it was across a busy road from the property. We would never of rented a property without an attached garden and we cut our holiday short as it was to stressful taking the dogs out during the night
We are sorry that you did not feel able to cross the road to the garden. We don't use the garden, because the house is on the beach anyway and that's the nicest place to walk or sit in the sun.
We will make it clearer in the listing description that the garden is on the other side of a road.

Problem with central heating and hot water first morning. Was able to contact owner who gave instructions on how to resolve. Cold showers not very welcoming!
Various slight niggles, toilet holder broken, three broken door knobs, leaking sink in kitchen - when washing up water went straight into drawer below. Owner said plumber coming back Monday after we left.
Probably these various things were disappointting
Hello Mike - apologies again for the plumbing problem. All now fixed!
The building is on the sea front at Walmer Beach. Walmer is an expansive shingle beach studded with wild grasses and fennel and backing onto well maintained greens popular with runners and dog-walkers. The beach extends unbroken for a mile or two to Kingsdown in the south, where there is a great beachside pub, The Zetland Arms. To the north you can walk up past Deal pier to the Sandwich golf courses. There is an excellent beginners sailing club and fishing boats offer days trips from Deal.
The property is about 15 minutes drive from the A2/M2, 90 minutes drive from central London or 75 minutes from the Dartford crossing.
Dover 7 miles (high speed trains approximately 70 minutes from here to London).
Euro tunnel terminal 17 miles.
Local trains run from London and Dover to Walmer (1.5 miles).
Walmer Castle 5 minutes walk, Deal Castle, Pier and Town Centre 15-20 minutes walk.
Sandwich 6 miles. Dover and the White Cliffs 7 miles. Broadstairs 16 miles. Turner Contemporary Gallery Margate 16 miles. Canterbury 21 miles.
There is a range of shops around the corner including a pharmacy, two pubs, two chip shops, a general store, a grocery and an excellent French restaurant. The major supermarkets in Deal are Sainsburys (open until 10pm every night) and the Co-op.
Deal's high street has everything you could need including Marks & Spencer and a wide range of independent shops including a large butcher, fishmonger, wine merchant, and lots of gift and antique shops.
Deal has too many good pubs and restaurants to list. Whether you are after full English breakfast, a cream tea, local real ale or champagne and oysters it is all here.
