I have let Cliff garden for twelve years now. We use the cottage as a family holiday home too so I have tried to make it really comfortable and good to stay in. I like to think of Cliff Garden as a home way from home and hope you will too.
Fiona Coulter purchased this cottage in 2005
Portloe is beautiful picturesque fishing village on the Roseland Peninsula. It has wonderful beaches and cliff walks. Local pubs and restaurants serve delicious cuisine. It is very peaceful yet you are able to travel to all the attractions of Cornwall quickly and easily. A bus service runs through the village to local areas which can be very handy.
The cottage is actually situation on the South West Coat Path - perfect for walkers, and their four legged friends.
The little harbour and beaches nearby are perfect for anglers.
In the village there is the famous Lugger Hotel that serves great food - perfect for that glass of chilled wine and a crab sandwich and chips for lunch or an a la carte dinner in the evening. The friendly Ship Inn about 100metres away serves great pub food with freshly caught fish specials. The little harbour is ideal for swimming or paddling as well as watching the boats go in and out. Freshly caught crab and lobster is readily available. The house is on the South West Coast Path and so the walks along the cliffs are stunning. The award winning beaches of Carne and Pendower are a few minutes away as well as many others.
Four of us stayed here for a family birthday celebration and it couldn't have been much better. The cottage was spacious yet cosy, the location was ideal for various different walks and the pubs on our doorstep were great for an afternoon drink or hearty meal. Everyone loved it and we will definitely be back!
The cottage is full of character and beautifully presented. Every need has been provided for. The garden's different levels and seating areas allow for sun or shade at different times of day and views of the sea are stunning.
The coast path is very near the cottage and wonderful for dog walks.
There are some lovely beaches nearby which are good for swimming.
Our stay coincided with the heatwave so we did not explore the area as much as we would have liked. We did however visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan (tremendous) & St Ives ( stunning bay but very busy even in term time).
We ate at the Ship Inn which is friendly and has well cooked pub food with a big shady garden & dogs welcome. We also went to The Nare's Head Hotel (Quarterdeck restaurant) for a special meal and were very impressed with the food and service.
Would definitely recommend Cliff Garden.
The cottage proved ideal for 5 of us. We had good weather and were able to use the lovely gardens. It is also very useful to have the Luggers Arms so close and the two times we ate there were a success. For a special occasion (Mothering Sunday) the Driftwood along the coast towards Portscatho was excellent
Delightful home with amazing garden and wonderful views. Everything needed is already there and the welcome cake is delicious. Very restful to have no mobile reception but if desperate WiFi is good.
Though the weather wasn't at its best - what can you expect from an English summer? - which meant that we weren't able to make best use of the amazing gardens we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cliff Garden. The house is well equipped and well presented, roomy for the five of us and dog that were staying, very comfortable and very well placed for exploring the beautiful Roseland Peninsula and other parts of Cornwall. Nearby places to visit include Carne Beach (wonderful cream tea at the Nare Hotel), St Mawes, St Just in Roseland (another wonderful cream tea) and, a little further afield, Fowey (excellent pasty) and Trebah Gardens. We had some exciting moments navigating the narrow lanes around Portloe and Veryan and were impressed by the frequency of the local bus service - except when we met the bus coming the other way in one of those narrow lanes. We wish that we had been able to stay for two weeks rather than one.
Cliff Garden is a solid, spacious, character house in a fantastic location. Comfortable and attractive, this homely yet stylish property has 3 receptions as well as a large kitchen. There is plenty of room to spread out and very little noise pollution as the walls are thick! Warm when the weather is cool and cool when the weather is hot. The charming garden goes on for ever and is full of surprises. Although it is steep, there are banisters to support your climb if necessary. The views from the front of the house and the garden are stunning. The bathrooms are great too. We loved our stay and highly recommend this place.
Coast/Beach:
The award winning beaches of Carne and Pendower are under 10 minutes drive away. There is plenty of parking at both in National Trust car parks with honesty boxes. There are lovely sands and rock pools and when the tide is out you can walk from one beach to the other. Above the beach is the Nare Hotel where you can sit and look out over the sea and enjoy coffee, lunches including crab sandwiches and chips and cream teas There are many more beaches about short drives away in both directions.
Restaurants
Not only is there the local village pub, The Ship, and The Lugger Hotel with its restaurant, but there is the Michelin starred Driftwood 15 minutes away. In the summer season the Hidden Hut, one of the best beach cafes in England less than 20 minutes. They have lovely fresh food and have lobster and paella nights - well worth a visit.
Cafe
About a 7 minute drive from the cottage is the Da Bara Bakery where you can get brilliant bread, coffee and breakfasts to eat in or take away. We never visit without at least one trip here.
Bus Service
There is a bus service running right through the village for access to local surrounding areas.
