About Charlie Tetley

We are a large farming family, l arrange flowers for all occasions and used to do silk flowers. My husband is ex army and farmed as well as ran racecourses.

Charlie Tetley purchased this barn in 1970

Why Charlie Tetley chose North Yorkshire

We have farmed this farm for 2 generations but were not using the buildings. The buildings were disintegrating and depressing us so we decided to do them up and convert them to a holiday cottage. This has been a great success done by 2 local boys within walking distance, one was a plumber and one an electrician who could both build.

What makes this barn unique

This property is very quiet on a farm with cows looking over the fence, the view of the Howardian Hills is lovely but you are also within easy distance of moors, sea, dales and some beautiful villages with good eating places. The cottage has been purpose built for disabled as we have an ageing Mother and we are not too young ourselves ! We are unique as it is just one unit so very peaceful with a very sheltered garden you can enjoy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Stunning property, beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures for this property do not really do it justice, this barn conversion is stunning and set in an equally beautiful location! The property was very clean with the owner providing lovely little touches like vases of fresh flowers, a bottle of wine and some homemade cake upon arrival. The property is private, peaceful and quite and is central to many great places to visit such as Castle Howard, the picturesque village of Helmsley, the steam trains at Pickering, the sweeping Moors, and the stunning coast line including Robin Hoods Bay. We really enjoyed our stay here and would fully recommend it to anyone who would like a slice of luxury living in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind remarks about the Cow Byre, extremely kind I am over whelmed. Yes it is a very private place but still has a lovely view. I enjoy letting people in and listening to the wow factor. Do come again. Camilla

A wonderfully calm, spacious and relaxing place.

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful high-quality conversion, perfect for a family, in the heart of rural North Yorkshire, surrounded by hills and the incredible big sky. We stayed for nearly a week and completely lost track of time and days. There are walks straight out of the door and excellent local pubs, including one with Chinese takeaway, but if you don't mind a drive you are close to York, the Moor, Whitby and Runswick Bay, Castle Howard, steam railways, farm shops and some beautiful towns and villages. We managed all these things and still spent time relaxing with the wood burning stove, watching a movie and enjoying the incredible bed. Thanks to wonderful hosts we felt like part of the family and hope to be back again soon.

Forget the Rest. This is the BEST!

  • 5 of 5

After a hectic Christmas and New Year with our business we couldn't wait to get away to our favourite cottage. Forget the weather - yes it was raining! We were in a superbly warm, cosy and so homely cottage AND log fire all ready burning away for us! What service. Cake, a bottle, that wonderful bed! First morning it was gone 10.00am before we woke.. So relaxed. And the addition of the DVD player helped us relax by sitting near the fire and totally chilling out in front of that huge TV. Another exceptional week. Thank you so much Camilla & Christopher for making us feel so at home. True friendly hosts. And loved meeting Frodo Tetley Baggins! Oh yes - We'll be back! Reg & June

Peace and perfection

  • 5 of 5

This has to be one of the best holiday cottages we have stayed in. A lovely location, incredibly comfortable, with plenty of indoor and outdoor space, and beautifully designed and laid out. Perfect for a family of four, would highly recommend it .

Best of the Best

  • 5 of 5

Our third trip to this Home from Home cottage and on this occasion we find Camilla has even changed the bed for us! No, not the sheets, but the whole bed! Now the original was huge and oh so comfy, but this one - talk about sheer luxury. My normal routine is waking at 6.30am as I have animals to feed, so that's what my body clock is set at. Imagine my surprise waking up the first morning after sleeping in this huge new bed to find it was 8.20am! Well done Camilla, you've improved on what we thought couldn't get better AND the addition of WIFI in the property was a real bonus for the tablet user during our stay :-) Another definite plus. Needless to say, our stay was peaceful, relaxing and lovely and warm with a wonderful roaring log fire. Superb, and we have definitely recharged our batteries. Not forgetting your warm welcome for us, not only knowing we had been busy with our business over Christmas but of our personal loss on Christmas Day. Your kindness and understanding was very much appreciated. Thank you Camilla. Here's raising a glass to you and your wonderful property and can't wait till we return later in the year. June & Reg.

Home sweet home!

  • 5 of 5

Requiring a quiet place to re-charge our batteries and after many hours of internet search we decided to spend our New Year in Yorkshire in the Cow Byre! May not sound grand, but oh boy, what a pleasure. Underfloor heating throughout, huge bed, wonderful bathrooms with walk in showers, huge TV and to us, that oh so important wood burner (yes, had to turn the underfloor heating down to use it.... cos it was too hot otherwise!) but didn't it work well and add to the ambiance of the beamed room. From the moment we walked in to find freshly baked bread and a bottle of red waiting for us we felt at home. The location of the premises gave easy access to both Yorkshire Coast and the Moors and with York only 30 minutes away, big town shopping is easy. But for us, just being able to lounge around, eat, drink, paint, watch TV and be so comfortable was bliss. In fact we were quite cross that someone else was coming into the cottage after us!!! You nearly had squatters Camilla :-)

Camilla you have created a little bit of heaven and we will certainly be back during 2014. Thank you for allowing us to use the Cow Byre .... Reg & June.
