You’ll find it’s the perfect location: St Ives offers unspoilt lanes, shops and five fantastic beaches and the Cobbles is so close to all of it - you can actually pad back and forth barefoot with your bodyboard from the front door if you like to the long sweep of Porthmeor sands. About Judith Hodgkinson

Hi, I'm Judith and I live just outside St Ives with my partner, a local artist. I was born near Lancaster. I enjoy the landscapes and life of West Cornwall as well as travelling in the UK and beyond. I have grown up sons and have worked for charities in London, as well as in community learning. Living close by means I can look after the Cobbles myself and I know this counts. The Cobbles really scores highly with guests. It's a beautiful peaceful, simple space, a perfect location too and they go home refreshed. I can offer flexible start dates and short stays, especially in quieter months. It's good to know I'm welcoming people from all sorts of backgrounds and with different interests from the UK and around the world, to create their own very special holiday, and to experience Cornwall. I feel lucky to be here and I hope they do too. I think most people who visit St Ives find that it makes their heart sing, one way or another.

Why Judith Hodgkinson chose St Ives area

I've been a regular visitor to Cornwall and for five years I've lived close to St Ives. The Cobbles gives guests a lovely central place to stay at the seaside and their own patio. The location always surprises people; like me they love the fact that everything is on the doorstep; sea and sands, shops, cafes, galleries - and yet it is so magically quiet all year round because the lane is lined only with fishermen's cottages, -no shops and traffic free.

What makes this apartment unique

The changing seasons and atmosphere: being so close to the sea is incredibly exciting when the tide is high. I love being out of the front door and on the beach or the coast path in a minute. St Ives is buzzing with people having a great time - today everyone was out sunbathing or sitting at street cafes - it always feels like a happy place. You can just nip back if you forget something or want a break, then off you go again. I particularly enjoy exploring the art galleries. St Ives is rich in art and the Cobbles has some beautiful, changing examples on the walls. Shopping is different and exciting here - stress free and surprising. I go to the Tate Gallery of course to the changing exhibitions; and the cafe has brilliant views. I often walk along the stunning coast east or west or ride out further to explore because this is a beautiful part of the world, within easy reach of famous public gardens, museums, pre-historic sites, climbing and walking. There is St Ives School of Painting a few steps away with short courses and guests seem to love it. I've known a few guests produce paintings while staying here.

But it's also a delight to sit out on the little patio at the Cobbles or curl up on the sofa with a book and the radio and just enjoy the peace.

Outside is a small sheltered, attractively tiled patio where you can sit and take in the quiet beauty of the old town cottages and lanes around you. The Cobbles is a No Smoking property and sorry, we don't normally accept pets. The Cobbles is well cared for and has the good fortune to attract considerate guests of all ages. . Outside: The Cobbles has a traditional stable door with a small, pretty, private and sheltered patio to the front with two chairs and a table Utility Room: Ironing board and iron, clothes dryer, Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Property is cleaned at changeover. Fresh Linen and Towels are provided for guests. Please bring your own beach towels.

'The Cobbles' St Ives - lovely and cosy, fresh flowers, a wonderful vibe as soon as you enter.

Firstly, the reservation was so easy to book, with access to a plethora of really useful information from Judith, the owner.

On arrival, 'The Cobbles' was lovely and cosy, clean and well equipped, fresh flowers on the table, a wonderful vibe as soon as we entered over the threshold - perfect!

The artwork on the walls was fascinating - a real talking point.

We were literally a few yards down 'Baileys Lane' away from so many tasty and healthy takeaway food outlets and restaurants and it was relaxing to wander the lanes around 'The Cobbles' exploring the Harbour and all the fascinating shops and galleries - everything was so close to 'home'.

The quilt on the bed was like sleeping under a big fluffy cloud and it was so quiet tucked away up Baileys Lane that we slept really well.

I read the 'guest book' and discovered many happy and satisfied temporary residents of 'The Cobbles'. We would love to visit again sometime and experience the peaceful magic once more. (I think we just found a little gem!)

Fantastic place to escape to!

We had such a lovely time staying at the cobbles!

The place was immaculate and obviously very well cared for. The location was perfect with just a stroll down the street to the shops and restaurants.

We ate out every night (found amazing bakery's for breakfast too!) so didn't make much use of the kitchen, however Everything you could need to fully cater for yourself was available.

Many thanks to Judith for being so helpful and providing the helpful information about St Ives. Also for the special extra touches like biscuits on arrival (just what you need with a cup of tea after such a long drive!) and for letting out such a lovely holiday flat.

I would highly recommend, and have already told our friends about staying at the cobbles. Great value for money and a lovely cosy flat. I'm sure we will be returning!

The cobbles was beautiful.

The cobbles was clean close to shops restaurants and of course the beach, and the welcome was really friendly with flowers milk in the fridge and biscuits we will defiantly be going back.

Very smart and well located!

The property is very well located, being literally 10-15 seconds away from Fore Street, the Sloop and the Harbour. Being up a pedestrianised alley (no vehicle access) it is very quiet and peaceful (bar the damn seagulls!!!)

The property itself is very smart in appearance, well decorated, bright and functional (with wifi, tv, washer-dryer, iron/board etc). It comfortably slept me and the wife, plus my daughter and friend on the sofa-bed. There were also flowers, a pint of milk and tea/coffee/sugar, S&P etc left for us on arrival, which was a nice touch indeed. The small patio area outside is nice for breakfast and G&Ts, despite not getting much sun.

If I was asked for one minor area of improvement it would be that the bed mattress is too new and hard!!!

All in all a great place to stay. Thank you Judith.

Guests usually rate the bed highly - and some have even asked me where they can get the same mattress to ensure as good a sleep at home, and I wouldn't say it was particularly hard myself, but I'm sorry you found it a challenge. Fortunately you had some great weather during your holiday so I guess you were making full use of the wonderful beaches most of the week. To really catch the rays on the patio it's true you need to be out there before midday. Thanks for your lovely feedback in the message book and hope you return one day.

Only a minute or two on foot to sweeping Porthmeor, the Harbour and Porthgwidden beaches. There are five beautiful clean sandy beaches in St Ives! Surfing is popular at Porthmeor and surf schools available locally. Boats for hire.The Hayle Estuary is bird paradise. It is lovely to walk east along the coast path to reach it or to head west to Zennor and clamber down to hidden coves. South coast delights, eg Marazion/Newlyn/Mousehole can be accessed easily by car/bus/taxi, approx 8 -12 miles.


Newquay airport 40 miles; Exeter airport 100 miles.Trains from London Paddington change at St Erth for direct line to St Ives; frequent connections. Property easy walking distance (10 mins) of train station, bus station;taxis available. Car use not essential for a great holiday in and around St Ives but it's an extra bonus to be able to explore more isolated places in West Penwith. Some free street parking; usual parking is in one of 8 Council car parks, winter to mid March just £2 for 24 hrs.


West Cornwall is a feast for anyone who enjoys wild landscapes. You can try cliff walking, climbing, find prehistoric settlement sites, stunning art and rich art history, enjoy seal/dolphin spotting, festivals, messing about in boats, surfing as well as good fresh food, traditional inns, and relaxing in the beautiful landscape. St Ives is on the north coast; nowhere is far away: from Sennen walk west to Lands End; or to Godrevy (NT)via Hayle to the east. Truro city/Penzance easily accessible.

Further Details:

You can buy almost anything in St Ives. There are many fascinating independent shops for food, clothes and crafts. There is the local Norway foodstore two minutes walk away and a small Co-op store in the town centre. You will have no problem finding a bank. It is bursting with art galleries and artists studios and you'll be amazed at the variety of tempting places to eat. There is also a cinema, jazz club, folk nights, theatre and a good little museum. You can take boat trips from the Quayside and go fishing if you wish. Popular places to visit nearby are Marazion, Penzance 7 miles, (see the Penlee Museum), Mousehole and Newlyn, Zennor (see the Church and the Tinners Arms) and the harbour of Porthleven on the Lizard (call into Breage church on the way to see the medieval wall paintings), and further on Falmouth maritime museum is an interesting excursion. I recommend a small new book about walks in the area 'Walking in Penwith' by David Chapman. There are also beautiful gardens close by - see Tremenheere, and Trengwainton, and Trebah further afield. You could visit the famous Eden Project on your way in or out of Cornwall. Closer to home: try the unmissable Cream Teas at Rosemergy near Bosigran on the north coast road. In among the narrow cobbled streets is St Ives school of painting where you can do some art yourself on one of their short courses. There are many good restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs open throughout the year both in St Ives and in the wider area. For a treat try the Mermaid in St Ives for example or the Taj Mahal in Penzance. The famous St Ives Festival of music and the arts runs from mid September annually for two weeks and makes this a wonderful time to visit. The amazing Tate St Ives gallery has major exhibitions throughout the year as do many other excellent galleries in the town, giving it a unique character and excitement. People love to be in St Ives for famously memorable New Year celebrations as well.

Guests can pay in full on booking, or 50% and then 50% 50 days before arrival.. Bookings made less than 50 days in advance usually require full payment to secure the booking. Booking confirmation includes details of cancellation policy and is sent out before any payment is taken.

Short stays are welcome out of season (min 3 nights) . Friday or Saturday changeovers preferred but this can often be flexible. Guests arrive from 1pm and leave by 10am on the day of departure. Late bookings welcome.
