About the property

Casa Joanna, Vorno, Lucca

Casa Joanna is situated in the charming traditional village of Vorno, famous for Royal families of the past who designed and built their summer villas in this tranquil, temperate village just south of Lucca (10 minutes drive) and north of Pisa Airport (30 minutes drive). Florence is 1 hour away. Chosen for its beauty, the views of the rolling Tuscan hills and the ever so slightly cooler temperature in the summer, Vorno became the home of some of the most amazing villas in Tuscany. Today the village has four restaurants, a village shop/butchers, church and small cafe. There is a regular bus service into Lucca. Located within the walls of Villa Lucia, Casa Joanna has it's own private garden, separate entrance and parking. The school house was designed and constructed in a grand style well over a century ago. The 4 metre high ceilings on the piano terra give an open spacious feel to the rooms with a large chandeliers hanging from the brick-laid vaults. A terrace provide al fresco dining for guests, partly shaded by an old cherry tree and mulberry trees. The delightful garden of terracotta pots, fruit trees, local flowers and scented climbers of jasmine and honey suckle create a truly Tuscan feel. The house can be rented out as one whole with 6 en-suite bedrooms or two separate houses with their own staircases and 3 en-suite bedrooms. The pool is salt water and exclusive for a six bedroom rental. It can be heated upon request. We have airconditioning in all bedrooms. We are lucky to have spring water from our taps. Casa Joanna is full of art, books and games. The kitchens are well equipped. There is fibre optic broadband wi-fi available and amazon TV. Sleepeezee mattress made from natural fabrics (wool and cashmere) provide the ultimate sleep experience, providing coolness in summer and warmth in winter. The sheets are 400 cotton percale. This is the ultimate relaxing retreat to enjoy with friends and family.

About Sarah Buckingham

We are a family of artists and scientists, a true Renaissance. We use this home for family weddings and get togethers where Melbourne meets San Francisco. The children love to cook and what better place than this. Shopping at the local farmers market, cooking and chatting and finally sitting in the evening air for long conversations over delicious food and wine.

Sarah Buckingham purchased this villa in 2003

Why Sarah Buckingham chose Capannori

If you really want to step off the world for a few days and chill right down, just come here. The word is "slow". Enjoy the beautiful art in this old school house and relax. Walk through the village up the hill until the road peters out. Take in the views. There is an excellent butcher/village shop and four restaurants that you can walk to. Our friends in the village say it is a piece of heaven. I must say we agree, it is indeed heaven on earth.

What makes this villa unique

Great house, beautiful village, 10 minutes from Lucca by car. Thirty minutes from Pisa airport. We have superior beds, beautiful cotton sheets, spring water from the taps, a salt-water, spring-fed pool, well resourced kitchens and fibre optic broadband. The walls are adorned with original art works from British artists and a great library. There are board games and TV's if required. The house can be one with six en-suite rooms or two separate houses each with their own front door and separate staircase. The views are stunning. This house is truly accessible and yet peaceful and idyllic.

There is air-conditioning in all bedrooms. The furnishings within Casa Joanna are stylish and the walls adorned with original artworks. Both kitchens are well equipped with place settings for 12 people. There are two washing machines and outside drying facilities. Outside: This delightful villa is nestled within the rolling tuscan hills within the village of Vorno where to the north Lucca is visible and at night appears to twinkle in the distance. It has a very attractive garden with sculptures and there is a colonnade with grape vine. The pool has recently been re-designed with a bench running the length of the shallow end. This is an excellent pool for young children and adults of all ages. The pool is private to the Casa Joanna when rented out as a whole, i.e, 6 en-suite bedrooms. When rented out as two units of three en-suite bedrooms (Casa Joanna East/West) the pool is shared with those who are renting the other side. There are loungers and pool-side chairs and tables, children's toys and floats. There are shaded terraces for outdoor eating and gazebos for shade. The garden has excellent views but is private and retains the charm of the Tuscan idyll. There is plentiful parking.

Beautiful Tuscan Villa

  • 5 of 5

Casa Joanna is set in the Tuscan Hills with a beautiful view of the mountains. This being our first time to Tuscany, the property was exactly what we imagined it would look like....complete with beautiful gardens, cypress trees, fresh herbs, bay leaf hedges and so much more,

The villa was perfect.....very spacious yet inviting and fully equipped with everything you could possibly need to make your stay wonderful (including dishwasher, gas stove, washer, fully equipped kitchen, plush towels, etc). We found the kitchen to be a wonderful place to cook, eat, enjoy wine and hang out. We had a cooking class in the villa with Chef Valentino and it was an incredible experience. We loved cooking together and then eating out on the terrace.

The bedrooms are all ensuite and a good size. The beds were very comfortable.

The property is ideally located to do day trips throughout all of Tuscany. We used a tour company called "Cruises on the Road in Tuscany" and they were amazing to work with. We visited Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Cinque Terre

And then to make a perfect situation even better, we met Roman, the property manager. When we arrived, Roman was there to meet us with Prosecco and a welcome basket of Tuscan goodies. From there, it only got better! He made sure that every part of our trip was perfect and he treated us like family. Roman was a big part of why this trip was so amazing!!

Casa Joanna exceeded our expectations. We stayed at the villa for five nights and we absolutely fell in love with the people and the place. We definitely will go back one day!

Amazing Tuscan villa!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family recently came back from a two week vacation in Italy of which we spent one glorious week in Tuscany. The six bedroom eight bathroom Casa Johanna was perfect for our group of nine (we could have used more people actually!). Both Roman and Sarah made us feel very welcomed and the huge villa had all the amenities one could ask for. The pool was well used almost every day by our kids and the canopies and loungers were great! The grounds were immaculate with beautiful flowers and greenery. The 360 degree views of the Tuscan hills and the city lights of Lucca were amazing. The pictures, as one previous guest mentioned, do not do the place justice. We also loved the area and had a chance to explore. Peace and blissful quiet was just what we needed. Thank you very much for hosting us Roman and Sarah!! We hope to be back one day!

A lovely property in a very quaint village!

  • 5 of 5

We had a party of 5 that thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the West side of Casa Joanna. The apartment looks even better than the photos can indicate.

The bedrooms are all nicely sized and each has its own individual bathrooms. The master bathroom is particularly nice with 2 sinks, a ver nice shower, and soaking tub from which you view the forested hills outside of Vorno.

The common space is very large open room with a huge table (that can seat more than a dozen people), a very nice kitchen and a seating area that has a comfortable couch and love seats. The kitchen has all of the equipment needed to cook whatever you'd like. It also has all of the utensils, plates, bowls, etc as well as glasses that you would ever need. When we arrived, there was milk in the fridge, coffee in the cabinet, and a loaf of fresh bread on the counter as well as fresh flowers in the bedrooms.

The outdoor space is very nice and we used the pool and comfortable lounge chairs and ate most of our meals out side under the canopy.

The owners happened to be staying in the east side of the villa. They were very respectful, warm and helpful hosts. The property manager was responsive and very helpful. One thing to note is that the deposit and rental payments are paid via wire transfers. In my case, that added $100 to the cost of the stay. It was still worthwhile but something to be aware of.

Vorno is a very quaint town with nice amenities. There is a very good restaurant called Bimbotta just a couple of blocks away. It bills itself as a pizza restaurant but actually has a much broader menu including pasta and meats. Also 2 blocks away is a very good butcher shop.

Owner's Response: It was lovely to welcome Edina, Dennis and family into our Italian home. They were excellent guests and we thank them for a lovely review. We do take onboard the comments regarding payment and plan to use STRIPE in future.

Italian rural idyll

  • 5 of 5

There were 5 in our group and our ages ranged from v early 20s, through the mid fifties and on up to mid 70s and we were here for our post Christmas holiday and New Year celebrations and it was all here for all of us. Villa Johanna, once upon a time the village school, is truly delightful: comfortable, clean, well maintained, quiet, relaxing, elegant, gracious, private and yet close enough to divine Lucca to ensure we all tasted the full Italian life on offer. We shopped close by for food and cooked our meals in the large family kitchen/living room. We indulged in the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted in Lucca after a cycle ride around the city walls and we partied in a local hostelry to bring in 2014. Walking around the village gave us a true taste of an unchanging way of life that is rarely experienced these days. We shall return!

Fantastic original Italian Villa

  • 5 of 5

Situated just outside Lucca, this beautiful villa is stunning and secluded in gorgeous gardens with a swimming pool. The villa is tastefully furnished, has a huge living room /kitchen plus generous size bedrooms with ensuite. Surrounded by fab views of Lucca and the countryside, there are so many walks to explore, including the local village and church. The villa exudes originality and authenticity.

We had a wonderful time there - you definitely need a car to explore and get to Lucca which is an amazing walled city, full of history. Highly recommended.
