Traditional Stone Cottage With Mountain Views

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Cottage in Sneem, Kerry, - Peaceful, Relaxing Surroundings With Access To Surrounding Hills, Stunning Scenery

Bridgets Cottage is a recently renovated traditional stone cottage on an elevated site with beautiful views down the valley towards the picturesque village of Sneem. Home to Bridget and John Sullivan and their family in 1901, the cottage was derelict for many years and used as a garden shed by the previous owners, the cottage has been restored to a lovely cosy little retreat. The owners home is nearby if you need any assistance. The property is set on a 7 acre smallholding and fresh veg and eggs are available to buy in season. The cottage has a walled sitting area to the side and back, with washing line, and a grassed area with a fantastic view across the valley and towards the mountain ridge behind, a perfect place to sit and relax. Outdoor chairs and tables and an open barbecue are provided. A perfect place for artists, photographers and writers, and for anyone needing to lose themselves for a while. There is a wi-fi signal available if you feel the need to contact the outside world. Signal strength not always good due to location, but there is also free wi-fi in most of the pubs and cafes in Sneem when our signal up here is weak.

From 1st October to 30th April electricity is charged for by meter reading at the end of your stay

A stairgate and highchair are available, please ask when booking.

Detailed directions are provided. The owner can come and meet you in Sneem if needed.

About Gary Russell

Owned by Gary and Sue Russell. We moved here in 2012 to semi retire :)

We saw this empty, overgrown, derelict little farm and thought we could make in into place it had once been.....we've never worked so hard in our lives!!

Gary Russell purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Gary Russell chose Ireland

This area is the real Ireland. During the summer some of the tourist hotspots can be fairly busy. Most of our regular visitors stay here because they love coming 'home' to the peace and quiet. The forestry around the farm is full of wildlife and birds. We're very near to the Kerry dark Sky Reserve, the skies on a clear night are fantastic.

What makes this cottage unique

Off the main tourist trail, but only 10 minutes down the lane to Sneem and the Ring of Kerry, so ideal for exploring. We provide maps and leaflets in the cottage, but as we live here too, we can often advise guests on where to go to see the unadvertised parts of the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is the perfect base for a sightseeing/beach holiday. The area is beautiful, the people very friendly, sue and Gary are brilliant hosts, giving lots of tips and advice on the local area. The village is very child friendly. Riney's does a very good Irish coffee! O'shea's is excellent for food. The local pharmacist is very helpful. We had an excellent holiday and will def return next year.

Wonderful stay here, hosts very friendly and helpful, lovely charming Irish cottage in the middle of stunning countryside. Panoramic views with wildlife on the doorstop! Perfect for touring Ring of Kerry. Would recommend to artists, writers and people wanting a break from it all in retreat-style location.

Very hospitable hosts, be hard to find a more accommodating pair, even in Ireland! Beautifully renovated cottage with all amenities to ensure that your stay is comfortable and easy. Surrounding countryside is breath taking.Highly recommend this area and cottage

Notes on accommodation: Cyclists and walkers can join the Kerry walking and cycle ways easily from here. The lane accessing the property ends here, so no passing traffic to spoil your peace and quiet. Walkers can continue up through the forest beyond, and up onto the ridge. Sikka deer and hare wander across the farm regularly. Situated 6km from the village, it offers peace and quiet and an ideal base to explore the Iveragh peninsular. Please ask the owner if you require transport to and from the village in the evening. Sneem has several pubs, some offering traditional Irish music to keep you entertained in the evening. There are several excellent cafes, tea shops and gift shops, and shops providing basic groceries. There is a post office in the village and an ATM in Christians Mace grocery shop. There is a large workshop on the farm for motorcyclists and cyclists to carry out basic maintenance, and for covered parking if required. Outside: Bridgets Cottage has a small garden to the front, kept simple because of the deer and hare that wander in and eat everything. There is a walled area to the side and rear, leading to a private grassed area with stunning views down the valley and over the forest onto the ridge behind. A wonderful place to sit and lose yourself. There is walking access to the hills around Kealariddig through the forest. There are tables and chairs provided. Plenty of towels and bed linen included, more always available. Changed weekly. Please note that 1st October till 30th April electricity is charged for by meter reading at the end of your stay.

Fantastic property in a really special setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved our holiday in Sneem. The property has lots of character and the setting is really special. Perfect spot for a quiet getaway. Sue and Gary were so helpful and we knew they were always at hand to help, if we happened to need it. We highly recommend staying here and we're looking forward to returning again. We were extremely sad to leave.

Relaxing in beauty

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here at the end of our two weeks in Ireland, and although we spent time in three other locations, could have spent the entire vacation here. Perfectly situation for visiting SW Ireland with the Rings of Kerry, Dingle, and Beara minutes away, and lovely towns. You can almost walk to the Kilarney National Park which is stunning.

Gary and Sue did a great job welcoming us to their property, and we enjoyed the goats, pigs, chickens and ducks - didn't visit the sheep which were happily grazing on the hills. The cottage was very comfortable, so much so that we stayed in a full day when the weather wasn't conducive for touring. We would definitely stay here on our next visit to Ireland, which we hope is soon!

Magical cottage in stunningly beautiful Kerry...

  • 5 of 5

This is such a special place. We were here 8 nights (would have been 9 had we not decided to stay in Tipperary on the way over from Dublin) and fell in love with the cottage and the area. Owners Gary and Sue have fixed the place up just right. Everything they’ve done is complementary to the original character of the cottage. Nothing is over the top. There are nice touches – like the fairy lights – everywhere that enhance the magic of the place. The immediate surroundings are stunning. We walked our dog up the long and winding track to Sneem every day and never once got bored with the route. The problem with Ireland is that it’s so beautiful there’s too much to do and see. But at Bridget’s Cottage you could stay put and not feel like you were missing out. Everything about this place is fantastic. There is nothing we could fault.

Beautiful cottage in the most gorgeous surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We really had a wonderful stay at Bridget's Cottage and Sue and Garry were wonderful hosts, Sue went out of her way to give us a tour of the farm and meet the baby goat which had just been born, this was the highlight of my daughters holiday!! The cottage itself was gorgeous and very well equipped, and though it was a little off the beaten track, it was situated in one of the most scenic places I've ever been. I would recommend it to absolutely everyone I know. 10 out of 10!!
