Lanouée Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage in Lanouee, Nr. Josselin, Dept 56 Morbihan, Brittany, France - Brest Canal, Peaceful Location, 5 Minutes Walk To Nearby Bars And A 5 Min Drive To The Nearest Town

Built circa 1670 and formerly a communal bread oven for the nearby properties (no longer in existence) the property was completely renovated and converted (to include all modern amenities including wifi) in 2013 and is now a unique and magical 'gingerbread' cottage. We have renovated the cottage as sympathetically as possible bearing in mind the limitations and restrictions because of the property's age and close proximity to a 13th century chapel. The roof is tiled in the traditional Breton 'reducing' fashion with local slate which we chose from the quarry at Pleven, and each tile is hand-cut and nailed. The exterior of the cottage has been re-pointed with lime mortar and the interior is insulated with sheeps' wool. All wooden doors, windows, shutters and the staircase are bespoke and crafted from local chestnut wood. Regretably the bread oven is no longer functioning (we were worried about the safety aspect) but remains as a decorative feature of the lounge. The cottage is situated in rural countryside and surrounded by green fields, there are no immediate neighbours apart from wildlife including a plethora of birds and a pair of squirrels who play tag in the garden. Relax in the privacy of the lovely little garden (bottle of wine optional!), take a stroll to the river or canal which are only minutes away or get on our/your bikes and cycle for miles and miles and miles.......you get the picture! We can provide a delightful wicker picnic hamper and blanket and supply you with a delicious picnic lunch (price on application) with your choice of Champagne/wine or cider so that you don't have to worry about finding somewhere to stop for lunch along the way. Our most enthusiastic cycling guests last year attempted to cycle 100k in one day and only just fell short of achieving their target! Can you do better?

Oh and just one more thing....absolutely no children!

About Sandra Bisson

We live in Jersey with our two cats and our pug puppy, we are both aged 50 something and had been travelling to France on our boat for about 10 years when we decided to buy a holiday/potential retirement home. Working hard in busy St Helier, we wanted somewhere to escape but within easy reach of St Malo (the drive is about 90 minutes) so that we could come across after work on a Friday night for the weekend. We both love eating, gardening, cycling and walking and the French way of life in general but we also like keeping busy so we bought a property that required an awful lot of work and have spent the last few years completely renovating the properties both inside and out. Our beautiful one-acre garden was actually a field of sheep when we bought the property but a bit, no make that a lot, of TLC has erased all traces of them.

Sandra Bisson purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Sandra Bisson chose Morbihan

We wanted peace and quiet so we picked Lanouee in the Morbihan which benefits from much warmer, (even hot!) summers than surrounding Brittany. We are only a short distance from such towns as Josselin, Ploermel, Pontivy, Malestroit etc but also an easy drive to both Rennes and Vannes with their bustling markets, fabulous restaurants and chic shopping. Situated on an island, the property has the Nantes-Brest canal on one side and the river Oust on the other and thus is ideal for walking, cycling, canoeing etc. In addition there is an abundance of local wildlife so if you're a keen or amateur ornithologist this is definitely the place to 'twitch'!

What makes this cottage unique

Petite Bourgrimaud is not your usual gite! Built circa 1670 it was a former bread oven so you are unlikely to find another property like it. It has been beautifully restored with a hand-cut, slate roof (from the quarry at Pleven) and traditional lime pointing. It has a wood-burning stove, travertine floors and bespoke doors, windows and staircase made from local chestnut wood. As the only other property on the island is our longere, which we do not rent out, you will experience absolute peace and tranquillity with a complete absence of other people's screaming children! With it's pretty garden, perfect for a BBQ or chilling with a bottle of wine, you are unlikely to want to leave but just in case you do there are two bars (one of which is reputed to serve the best take-away pizzas in the area) within walking distance and a creperie.

Beautiful rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Petite Bourgrimaud for a weeks relaxation in September. The cottage is exactly as it looks on the website. Very pretty and well maintained. The location is rural so be prepared for quiet, however not too far from restaurants and a beautiful chateau 6 miles away in Josselin.

We were lucky to have a very warm week for the time of year, and enjoyed spending the evenings in the garden of the cottage with some very comfortable sun loungers!

The facilities at the cottage are as advertised, so some thought needs to be given to cooking if not eating out. The BBQ is great if you have the weather, but you may need to plan for an alternative (microwave provided and toaster etc). I brought a slow cooker and camping gas hob with me, but I am obsessed with food!

The only negative comment was the wifi connection, although Sandra has tried to improve this, due to the rural location the signal is not great. The only other issue we encountered was the heat! As mentioned we had a particularly warm week, so the bedroom got a bit warm to sleep - perhaps the option of a fan may be useful for summer months.

We had a lovely stay with a very friendly welcoming host (and dog). The welcome champagne in the fridge was a lovely touch on arrival.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this very fair Review! You did have the most amazing weather for September and tbh, I couldn't sleep that week either. Will be installing cooling fans both in the cottage and the main house for next Summer. The wifi is,and continues to be, an issue, we've had France Telecoms visit us 3 times so far, and they've charged each time, only to find nothing amiss......

Beautiful property, very tastefully decorated. Fantastic location for exploring Briitany.

  • 5 of 5

Our wish was for a laid-back chilled experience. Our stay at petit bourgrimaud more than ticked our boxes. Visiting local sights by car, on bike or by foot brought us to meet friendly people.

The local area was a true oasis of calm and peacefulness.

The property and garden area were to a high standard; we had a barbecue every evening due to the glorious weather. For a coupe wanting to relax and spend time together, this is the place. We have come home with a different outlook on life thanks to the time we spent here.

Thank you,

Liz and Glen

Beautiful cottage in lovely countryside

  • 4 of 5

The cottage has been lovingly renovated and the owner has thought of everything that you might want or need during your stay. The garden is beautiful and if the weather is right you can enjoy your meals outside on the picnic table or sunbathe in the garden as the owner has provided deck chairs and sun loungers for you to use.If you feel energetic but don't want to go for a walk you can use the bikes the owner provides. The only reason that we have not given this property 5 stars is being older people we found the access to and from the bedroom not the easiest and having to go down stairs to the bathroom during the night. The countryside around is beautiful and we had some lovely walks along the canal. Josselin and Pontivy are within easy reach by car for you to do your main shopping.

Owner's Response: Hi Frances, I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay but I have to say that I am more than a little disappointed that you only gave the cottage 4 **** because the bathroom was downstairs!! The cottage was built in the 1600's and I don't think that much consideration was given to toilet facilities back then! In addition, you never gave me any indication, when you were booking, that stairs would be a problem and I make it quite clear that the cottage is, regretably, not suitable for people with mobility issues. Had you said as much when you were booking I would have declined your reservation, as it is I gave you a discount of £100 which represented about 30%! Once again please accept my apologies for the difficulty that you encountered with the stairs. Kind regards Sandra

Superbly renovated, very comfortable picturesque cottage for two in delightful Brittany countryside.

  • 5 of 5

It was a delightful surprise to find such an attractive and obviously lovingly restored fairytale cottage in an idyllic countryside setting, away from traffic and with just the sound of birdsong as an accompaniment.

The cottage was clean, comfortable and well equipped with everything one could need and Sandra's warm welcome made us feel at home straight away. The wood burning stove was efficient and gave the cottage a cosy ambience.

We enjoyed the best of both worlds. We could stroll along the canal towpath and wander the country lanes (we even found a friendly bar for a well earned drink!) or we could visit nearby Josselin and Rohan by car for delicious meals at the excellent Table d'O and l'Eau d'Oust restaurants respectively. Ploermel and Josselin, only 10-15 minutes away by car, also have several very good brasseries and creperies. This April it was too chilly for a barbecue, but we would have loved to have tried the natty gas barbecue out - hopefully on our next visit!

We think this is the perfect holiday cottage for couples looking for a romantic getaway, where one can simply enjoy each others company in relaxing and tranquil surroundings or for those who would like to experience the best of what Brittany can offer in the way of chilling out in a perfect countryside oasis, but still being only minutes away from charming old towns with excellent and diverse dining out potential!

The only slight problem for us (being an older couple) was the low ceiling in the mezzanine bedroom which meant having to bend quite a lot. It took a little bit of getting used to, but didn't spoil things in any way.

More relaxing than a bear with a hunny pot

  • 5 of 5

If you want a raucous, friend filled, noisy vacation, do not come here. I really needed to chill out and found this gem. Down the end of a cul-de-sac, the road peters out and progresses, past the cottage, to a footpath over a river bridge, round a 13thC chapel and then to the 'local' which is also a shop. Good start.

The location is off the main road and about 5 minutes from the main town. Its also on two marked bike routes that stay off the busy roads - as well as the never ending idyllic Brest-Nantes canal, 200 yards away. Inside, the cottage is bijou-nice and the fittings are top quality. Went in the slightly off season so the wood burner was very handy and had better pictures than the DVD's I took. Yes, there is only a microwave for cooking (plus the outside BBQ), but I can cope with that in between a couple of restaurants and the obligatory lunch baguettes.

If you need to de-stress and can't afford a psychiatrist, go here.

Special interest holidays:

As we have the Boc-Neuf river on one side and the Nantes Brest canal on the other, the property is ideally situated for walking and cycling (bicycles provided) not to mention canoeing! There are always plenty of fishermen along the towpath or on the bridge so I guess that it's great for fishing too! We are happy to provide you with a picnic lunch (at nominal cost) so that you don't have to interrupt your cycle ride to find somewhere to eat along the towpath, please don't hesitate to ask!

We have an enormous amount of wildlife, foxes, squirrels, badger, deer etc though some of them are quite shy so you may hear rather than see them. We also have a wide variety of birds, including woodpeckers and owls, and the swallows regularly enter the house to say hello! There are some fantastic opportunities for keen photographers of wildlife or even the night sky as we have no light pollution whatsoever!

Coast/Beach:

The beach at Lac au Duc is a short drive away, which offers many different water sports and a 9 hole golf course, as well as a very safe beach for sunbathing and swimming.

Travel:

Situated approx 72 miles from St Malo; a drive which takes approximately 90 minutes through picturesque, rural countryside. As the cottage is situated in rural Brittany a car is absolutely essential to get to and from the property but it is situated on a 'Voie Verte' (cycle track) and thus there is unlimited cycling so you can leave the car behind, if you so wish, once there. Bicycles are provided for your use.

Distances:

Josselin with it's medieval castle is a 5 minute drive or 30 minute cycle (along the tow-path) away. Ploermel is a 10 minute drive, other nearby towns include Pontivy, Malestroit, La Gacilly etc. Rennes and Vannes are within an hours drive.

Further Details:

Both Josselin and Ploermel are busy towns with all the usual amenities (shops, restaurants, banks etc) and weekly markets selling local produce and wares. The French supermarkets of Le Clerc and Super U are both situated within a 5 minute drive and offer a superb range of goods as well as amazing fresh produce. The supermarket at Ploermel sells fantastic shellfish and we have even been able to obtain King Crab legs which were a couple of feet long and tasted superb!
