About Helen Caine

Helen was brought up in the farmhouse. She and her husband Peter bought the Barn in 2008 from members of her family.

Why Helen Caine chose South Hams

The Barn was where we played in the hay as children and fed the young calves who were housed in the lower floor! It was converted nearly 35 years ago and now is sited in the peaceful valley I knew so well.

"We had a really lovely stay here! Fabulous walks on Dartmoor and visits to the beach - and then a cosy cottage to return to. Thanks! Helen and family were extremely helpful always."

"We really enjoyed your lovely barn We loved cycling up and down the hills, liked walking (rain and sun) and enjoyed the town of Totnes several times. Many thanks for your hospitality and for our comfortable stay in your well-equipped Barn."

Lovely barn equipped with everything needed

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely week in this area of south Devon with our four legged friend. The owners were friendly and met us on arrival, gave us all the info needed and then left us to enjoy the delicious fresh scones which were waiting for us. The barn is very well equipped and is in a great location. It is only 5 minutes from the main road which was great for exploring the area. It is situated in the rolling hills of the South Hams with countryside views. We would recommend the barn to anyone thinking about staying and would love to return.

excellent, however.....

It was a lovely country location, it was a beautiful cottage which well maintained there were all the facilities that one could ask for.

The owners were very nice and would do anything they could to help us enjoy our holiday. It is very well situated for country pursuits and not to far from the seaside town of Paignton,

The only drawback is if you have a large car like myself you will have to reverse out into the road onto a blind bend which can be dangerous and scary.

This could be resolved by a small and inexpensive widening to a small area of the drive.

However I would still recommend this cottage as we enjoyed our weeks stay.

Coast/Beach:

The beautiful beaches of the South Devon are only 20 minutes drive away, sandy Bigbury and Thurlestone, pebbly Slapton and more comercial Paignton or Torquay. There are many small coves and cliff walks where it is possible to get away people altogether.

Travel:

By car - we are 1 mile from the Avonwick/South Brent turn-off from the A38 South Devon. Expressway (a car is recommended).

By train - we're 7 miles and a cab ride from Totnes main line station, served by fast trains from London, the Midlands and the North.

By air - Exeter airport is less than a 45 minute drive.

By sea – Brittany Ferries dock at Plymouth (18 miles).

Distances:

The barn is 5 miles from the historic town of Totnes with it's Castle and Guildhall and many places of interest and 5 miles from the pretty market town of Ashburton known as the gateway to Dartmoor. These local market towns boast a variety of individual shops from the quirky to the traditional. Within walking distance is the village of Avonwick with it's friendly village pub and beer garden; a shop selling local produce and an unusual little church.

Further Details:

As well as the village shop in Avonwick there is a good local butcher, baker, delicatessen and small Co-Op in South Brent (11/2 miles), a large Tesco just down the A38 at Lee Mill (7 miles) which can deliver here, along with many restaurants in towns like Ashburton and Totnes.
