About Helen Caine
Helen was brought up in the farmhouse. She and her husband Peter bought the Barn in 2008 from members of her family.
Why Helen Caine chose Avonwick
The Barn was where we played in the hay as children and fed the young calves who were housed in the lower floor! It was converted nearly 35 years ago and now is sited in the peaceful valley I knew so well.

Fantastic holiday home in a great location
We stayed at Horsebrook Barn over the Easter weekend and we had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The cottage is much bigger than we imagined from the photos online. There were 5 of us in total including our daughter and we were delighted with how spacious and well equipped Horsebrook Barn is. There was a log fire burning and a cream tea waiting for us when we arrived. The kitchen and living rooms are spacious and bright, with plenty of books and games. The kitchen is really well equipped. The cottage is about 10 minutes walk along the lane past the river to the village of Avonwick where there is a very nice welcoming pub. We found that Horsebrook Barn was a great base for a few days exploring the local area including a trip to the Cornish coast and a cycle ride along the Granite Way on Dartmoor. All in all highly recommended!
Thank you for your positive feedback, we are really glad you had a good holiday. It is great to hear such good comments and hopefully it will help others decide to come and stay too.
Very comfortable and spacious accomadation in a beautiful and peaceful location
The property was ideally situated for us to explore many attractions with our young grandson.
Very clean and spacious
Excellent stay for a week. The barn is spotlessly clean and spacious....the photos don't do this place justice! Beautiful location, and a warm welcome from Helen. Thank you.
Very good stay indeed
Helen was very welcoming. The property was lovely and in a nice location. Thank you very much!
Fantastic Barn in Great Location
Horsebrook Barn is a great place to stay. It's spacious with plenty of room for 6 and very warm and cosy. It has everything you need and the owners are very helpful and friendly. The location is perfect for being away from it all yet within easy reach of many attractions and the coast and moor. We love it.
Great location. Clean and spacious.
Want to go back in the summer as the barn is in a great place for little seaside resorts of Devon and right by dartmoor. Wet weather conditions, but it was cosy in the barn with the open fire. Oh , and the homemade scones Helen made for our arrival were delish!! Thank you. Xx
Thank you for your kind words but we must admit that we didn't make the scones we like to get them from the local bakery in South Brent
The beautiful beaches of the South Devon are only 20 minutes drive away, sandy Bigbury and Thurlestone, pebbly Slapton and more comercial Paignton or Torquay. There are many small coves and cliff walks where it is possible to get away from people altogether.
By car - we are 1 mile from the Avonwick/South Brent turn-off from the A38 South Devon. Expressway (a car is recommended).
By train - we're 7 miles and a cab ride from Totnes main line station, served by fast trains from London, the Midlands and the North.
By air - Exeter airport is less than a 45 minute drive.
By sea – Brittany Ferries dock at Plymouth (18 miles).
The barn is 5 miles from the historic town of Totnes with it's Castle and Guildhall and many places of interest and 5 miles from the pretty market town of Ashburton known as the gateway to Dartmoor. These local market towns boast a variety of individual shops from the quirky to the traditional. Within walking distance is the village of Avonwick with it's friendly village pub and beer garden; a shop selling local produce and an unusual little church.
As well as the village shop in Avonwick there is a good local butcher, baker, delicatessen and small Co-Op in South Brent (11/2 miles), a large Tesco just down the A38 at Lee Mill (7 miles) which can deliver here, along with many restaurants in towns like Ashburton and Totnes.
