A real gem of a place. The property was so welcoming as were the family

  • 5 of 5

Couldn't have asked for more. A glorious place on the heart of Dartmoor in a remote no coverage no wifi area. Just what we wanted. Went off grid for a week and enjoyed a week of sun smiles sea and scary drivers. The family were wonderful and made us feel very at home. Really couldn't have wanted anything more.

Not what you expect

  • 2 of 5

First impressions are good, all you'd expect to be provided is. However we didn't enjoy our stay here, we found the bed very uncomfortable, the shower has a mind of it's own going very hot to freezing cold, the smoke alarm was available but not fitted and placed on top of the wardrobe. The DVD player is still not working, although the postet note let's you know this, could very easily just remove the player or even better just replace it with a new one. The place is damp and found the matches provided would not strike, and the wood provided was also damp and took ages to get any heat. On the plus if you don't mind sharing with the occasional wood lice that's fun. Sorry again but defo won't be coming back to this place. We got so fed up with lack of sleep on the uncomfortable bed so decided to call it quits a day early. The welcome pack is laminated, probably to stop it getting to damp.

Nice property terrible customer service

  • 2 of 5

The Coachouse is cute and in a very peaceful location, however being regularly greeted by the animals seams to give people the impression this place is homely. We have rented from owners direct/home away on numerous occasions but Have never experienced such rude behaviour from the owners before. Firstly on arrival the key is left in the door despite the property being situated next door to the owners house they can't be bothered to welcome you and give you any useful information. They even saw us and still didn't bother. The private gardens surrounding the cottage are completely shaded and as it was glorious weather we wanted to relax in the sunshine after our days out so moved the table and chairs into the sun. Again the owners saw us sat there but rather than politely explain that we are not allowed to do this they left a post it note on our car asking us to stay out of their (6 acre ) garden this was confusing as the instructions left in the cottage say dog owners are free to make use of the grounds but yet we were not allowed to sit for an hour in their laundry area. There are also pictures of the garden (pond and trampoline)in the listing but this is not for guests to use. When I dropped them a message to ask if there was anywhere we could sit in the sun I got a snooty response.

This ruined our stay and made us feel like vermin on their land not paying guests.

There is also no ice box/freezer and the shower is terrible, cooker useless and bed very uncomfortable.

If it weren't for the cute dog, chickens and cat and glorious village this would've been a horrendous break.

A perfect moorland getaway

  • 5 of 5

Had a fabulous few days here, would have loved to have stayed longer but enjoyed a beach day, a moorland day and also some fabulous horse riding on the moor at nearby Cholwell Stables. The Coach House is in a great spot near the village but with access straight onto Dartmoor. Spotlessly clean and comfortable with everything I needed and I loved the visiting dog, cat and chickens. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Quiet,clean,comfortable cottage for 2

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights midweek. The cottage was very quiet in lovely surroundings. Very clean and we had all we needed, a fridge with a small freezer would have been ideal but for just the 2 of us it was fine.

I enjoyed my evening with the owners cat who decided to make itself comfortable on our laps! It was nice seeing the dog and the chickens.

The only issue we had was that the DVD player didn't work, the owner let us try another one from their home but that was not working either so we didn't get to watch the boxset we had planned. Other than that the cottage was well worth the visit.

Owner's Response: Sorry about the DVD player. Especially as you had something specific to watch. Hopefully, it didn't detract from your stay too much.

Perfectly tucked away and with excellent access to the moors, Will and Julie were excellent hosts!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you very much for making our stay very memorable! Although the weather was fairly grim, we now have an excellent excuse for coming back another time for some more exploring of the moors and local pubs. Ebony (our dog) also loved her time there, and almost slept for solid day when we got home!

Thank again for being such welcoming hosts.

Matt and Folake

Plymouth is the nearest city and is just 12 miles away and it has a real metroploitan buzz. Steeped in history and linked to SIr Francis Drake and the Pilgrim Fathers, it also has a great harbour and lots of things to do. Check out the superb marine aquarium, go ice skating, or visit Drakes Shopping Mall. The village of Horrabridge is a 5 minute walk down the hill. The nearest town of Tavistock is a 10 minute drive.

Further Details:

Staying at Monkswell you will be in easy reach (3.0 miles) of visiting the dramatic landscapes of Dartmoor used in Steven Spielburgs latest film The War Horse.

Monkswell is on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park so it is well placed to explore the 368 square miles of outstanding countryside.

There are some excellent pubs nearby that include; The London Inn & the Leaping Salmon. Just a short drive away there are more great pubs including The quaint Whitchurch inn, the Peter Tavy Inn, Elephants Nest and a number more on Dartmoor.

Lydford Gorge is one of Devon's's the deepest gorge in the whole of the south West, and it's surrounded by ancient woodland.

The river Lyd at this stretch is fast flowing, and the gorge features two "must see" attractions - the White Lady Waterfall and Devil's Cauldron.

Dartmoor is great for kids. In addition to everything else that you can see on this page, you can also go to Pony centres, Dartmoor zoo, Farms,

do a Dartmoor tresure trail

(after purchasing trail books), Donkey park, Dartmoor Prison museum, Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre and much more!

As well as seeing Dartmoor ponies across the moorland, you can also ride horses across many parts of Dartmoor. Cholwell Riding Stables at Mary Tavy is situated between Okehampton and Tavistock. On Dartmoor, there are a number of options for fishing that can include fly fishing and river fishing for Salmon, Trout Aand Sea Trout. You will need permits to fish and we do have contacts with guided fishing tours as well so there are quite a few options for keen anglers.
