The perfect escape for a week!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time at the coach house. It’s in a lovely location to explore Dartmoor and a short drive away from Tavistock and Plymouth. The facilities were spot on and the hosts were lovely, especially the daily visits from twiggy and Tilly, who our 9 month old fell in love with! We all had a fantastic holiday and it was just what we needed! Thank you!

Very comfortable cottage. Perfect for two people and our dogs

  • 5 of 5

We had a very happy week at the cottage. It was clean and comfortable. Access was easy and we were made to feel very welcome. The cottage is in a perfect position to access Dartmoor and is also easy for getting around South West Devon with good access to Plymouth and Tavistock. The cottage was airy and it was very enjoyable sitting out in the gardens in the mornings and evenings. The dogs had plenty of space to wander around in without getting into any 'trouble.' The cottage is set in a very quiet and peaceful environment.

Cosy cottage close to the moor

  • 5 of 5

Loved our week in the Old Coach House. Found it perfectly located to enjoy a lot of Dartmoor and surrounding areas. Cottage itself was very good and lovely to have secure private garden for our dog. Minor details would have liked a wok in the kitchen and also a full length mirror somewhere. The owners and their dog were very friendly. With their dog Twiggy calling in to visit several times a day which we loved. Thank you!

Lovely simple getaway

  • 4 of 5

The Coach House is sweet, simple, fully equipped and perfectly adequate. We stayed for 2 nights with our 10 yr old daughter and 2 dogs and absolutely loved it. The surroundings are beautiful, plenty for dogs to run around.

We wished we’d stayed longer and we will certainly be back and will recommend to friends / family.

We would have given a 5 star just a minor point that we’d have benefited from a closure of sorts to prevent our dogs tearing off to the owners private garden! (Owners property sits beside the coach house) Perhaps they didn’t mind or didn’t see and could be unnecessary worry on our part. Just would have lifted the one and only (very minor) stress.

Horrabridge village is lovely, not cheap it would be fair to say. Large glass of white wine in the London Inn £5.50 and next door at the chippie 2 x cod and chips plus a childs cone of chips came out at £16. Surprisingly cheaper in Bournemouth on both.

Big thumbs up from us all including our daughter who’s highlight was the gorgeous brown and white (springer?) dog who she misses dearly!

Perfect cottage, in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage itself was perfect, full of character and charm, downstairs was warm and cosy, and upstairs was light and airy, and well enough equipped to meet all of our needs for our stay. It is situated in a peaceful spot, just a few minutes walk of Dartmoor. We stayed for 3 nights, but wish it had been longer as Dartmoor has so much to offer, and the cottage is in a perfect location for exploring, we tend not to go back to the same place twice, but I have a feeling that we will be back some time soon!

Distances:

Plymouth is the nearest city and is just 12 miles away and it has a real metroploitan buzz. Steeped in history and linked to SIr Francis Drake and the Pilgrim Fathers, it also has a great harbour and lots of things to do. Check out the superb marine aquarium, go ice skating, or visit Drakes Shopping Mall. The village of Horrabridge is a 5 minute walk down the hill. The nearest town of Tavistock is a 10 minute drive.

Further Details:

Staying at Monkswell you will be in easy reach (3.0 miles) of visiting the dramatic landscapes of Dartmoor used in Steven Spielburgs latest film The War Horse.

Monkswell is on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park so it is well placed to explore the 368 square miles of outstanding countryside.

There are some excellent pubs nearby that include; The London Inn & the Leaping Salmon. Just a short drive away there are more great pubs including The quaint Whitchurch inn, the Peter Tavy Inn, Elephants Nest and a number more on Dartmoor.

Lydford Gorge is one of Devon's gems...it's the deepest gorge in the whole of the south West, and it's surrounded by ancient woodland.

The river Lyd at this stretch is fast flowing, and the gorge features two "must see" attractions - the White Lady Waterfall and Devil's Cauldron.

Dartmoor is great for kids. In addition to everything else that you can see on this page, you can also go to Pony centres, Dartmoor zoo, Farms,

do a Dartmoor tresure trail

(after purchasing trail books), Donkey park, Dartmoor Prison museum, Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre and much more!

As well as seeing Dartmoor ponies across the moorland, you can also ride horses across many parts of Dartmoor. Cholwell Riding Stables at Mary Tavy is situated between Okehampton and Tavistock. Rides are available across Dartmoor, novice and experienced riders taken, qualified tuition, hard hats. Experienced escorts open all year.

On Dartmoor, there are a number of options for fishing that can include fly fishing and river fishing for Salmon, Trout Aand Sea Trout. You will need permits to fish and we do have contacts with guided fishing tours as well so there are quite a few options for keen anglers.
