Cottage near Kirriemuir, Scotland - Peaceful Rural Location
About Dane Henderson
Mary & I have owned Auldallan Cottage for 19 years, when we purchased it we we undertook significant refurbishment including adding a kitchen and bedroom extension using local materials and craftsmen. My family grew up in Carnoustie and as teenager spent many summer holiday locally at nearby Craighton of Airlie, when the opportunity presented to purchase Auldallan Cottage we knew immediately this was the right decision and enjoy sharing the cottage. We have used our cottage as a family retreat for our 4 children whenever we can and have celebrated many family occasions in the beautiful setting. When not used by our family we happily share the beauty and tranquility with others. As our family has grown we have added additional accommodation in the form of the unique 2 bed self contained Armadilla glamping pod which is available as an extra cost option.

Well-equipped cottage in a rural setting
Everything was as-advertised. The roads are one-track for most of the way from Kirriemuir. I did not have cell signal at the cottage. The wood-fired stove in the sitting room was perfect, with lots of firewood available, along with newspaper to get it started. The kitchen had everything I needed, as did the bathrooms. There are 2; however, the shower stall in the smaller bathroom is very tiny and the natural drafts from the shower meant I had a shower curtain stuck to my leg most of the time.
The water is from a well and uses a pump that the occupant is responsible for turning on and off. This is ordinarily not an issue unless doing laundry or using the dishwasher. The water was very hot very quickly.
While it was not very cold during my visit, the radiators (both water and electric) kept everything comfortably warm (too warm at times, until I figured out all the various heating methods and their various efficacies).
My only real complaint was with regards to rodents, both terrestrial and airborne. I found evidence of rodents under the kitchen sink, and on 2 separate occasions I had to chase a bat out of the cottage (this was not easy). I can't say how it got in, but all the windows and doors were closed except for the few seconds to enter or exit. I also heard something scrabbling around in the attic in the overnight hours.
Overall, as expected, it was a rustic cottage away from everything, which was exactly what I wanted. I enjoyed it immensely and would recommend it to others looking for the same.
Idyllic country setting
We live near the cottage & rented it while we had friends over for our wedding. Dane has been fantastic throughout, coming with fast replies to any queries we had. They were kind enough to let us hold our wedding ceremony in the cottage garden so we could enjoy the beautiful views. No need to explain that we truly love this part of the world. Thank you for having us & we'll definitely use it again when we've friends & family visiting.
Wonderful location, no traffic noise, just bird song.
Well worth the long drive from the midlands. The cottage was well equipped and was totally quiet and peaceful except for the (very) occasional tractor which our ten month old grandson enjoyed. We saw hares while we sat in the garden eating breakfast, and the cuckoo sang constantly - the absence of traffic noise, and sounds of birds (swallows, owl, peewits, coaltits and many others), are what we are missing most now that we are home. It was a perfect base for going out walking. We recommend Glen Clova /Glen Doll/Corrie Fee; also going up Morrone from Braemar, and a walk from Glen Isla up Monega and Little Glas Moel. Perfect for three generations on holiday together: or any other group who like to be in breathtaking countryside for that matter!
A quiet and beautiful place
This cottage is located in a very peaceful and beautiful glen. Every morning if the weather permit it, you can have the chance to have a wonderful sunrise. The cottage itself is perfect, and very cosy.
We all five had spent a perfect journey in this cottage. Glen can be easily reach by phone, and is very kind.
I recommend !
The quiet was astounding!!
We had an absolutely amazing time at the cottage. It was very cozy, and given the chilly weather the fire every evening was something to look forward to while out and about. The drive to the cottage is not easy, but so worth it. The sheep were fun to watch, especially the mom with twins who liked to graze in the upper front yard of the cottage! They liked us, I think. The only problems that we had were related to the functioning of some of the utilities. Since we are not from Scotland, we didn't know about the "boost" function, nor could we find the controls in the small closet in the larger bedroom. As a result, we had no hot water for the first two days of our trip. Better directions regarding this would have been helpful. Luckily the sheep did not mind our stink!! Great, great trip. I hope to return soon.
