Overview

About the property

3 bed Cottage in Ilfracombe, N Devon with sea views

No. 2 Castle Terrace is a small 3 bedroomed cottage which has an attractive enclosed garden with two terraces a summer house and a decking area at the highest level offering views out to sea and across to Wales. There is also space at the rear for private parking.

There are 3 bedrooms, one double, one small with bunk beds and a back single bedroom. The cottage is ideal for family holidays and could just accommodate a family of 6 as an extra bed can be provided in the back bedroom, but it is not large enough for groups of more than 4 adults

We have just had a new kitchen installed and some decorating work carried out, so the property has been closed until end May.

The garden to the rear is tiered so supervision of small children is advisable and unsuitable for ball games but hey, you have the beach nearby!

A short (steep) walk takes you directly to the harbour where you can walk around the sea front amenities, including Damien Hirst's statue Verity. There are plenty of local attractions a short drive away to cater for all tastes, plus of course the beautiful coastline with the exciting Atlantic waves crashing in on the beaches.

Lovely little cottage in an ideal location

  • 5 of 5

10 - 15 minute walk from the harbour and beach and with a parking spot which is handy in Ilfracombe. I would recommend this as an ideal base to explore North Devon as there is plenty to do. It is a steep walk back to the property but this is Ilfracombe which is mostly hilly and we soon got used to it.

A lovely family holiday

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was clean and well presented - and it felt more like a home than a holiday cottage due to the nice decorative touches. It was well stocked with everything we could need. Jim and Alice were very helpful and easy to communicate with. We had four days of gorgeous weather so were able to eat out on the patio in the back garden (the sunniest bit is half way up, so we moved the furniture to make the most of the evening sun). The walk to the Harbour front going down only takes 5 minutes, but it's a rather more strenuous walk coming back up. Great to be on a hill, though, to make the most of the lovely sea views. The only downside was the damp smell in the bathroom, so we had to keep the window open constantly. A very enjoyable stay, though, and would recommend to others.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the lovely review, this is exactly how we like guests to feel about the cottage. Also thanks for the comments on the bathroom which I assume has arisen from recent guests who had a flood in there. I will address that damp odour as soon as I can.

Overall very good impression except for the fridge in the kitchen

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Ilfracombe, our only reservation about the property was

The size of the fridge. We had expected it to have been replaced but it was a small fridge with the old fashioned built in freezer, no good for keeping ice creams frozen or for cooking meals in advance and freezing. With a family of six you definitely need a bigger fridge/freezer. Also it might be a good idea to mention that the cottage is not really suitable for a disabled person. I couldn't manage the many steps from the parking at the back of the property to the back door and there were also steps from the front down to the road. I managed with a lot of help but I can still walk a little, a lot of disabled people can't manage any steps.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. We only have a small fridge with freezer compartment as they cottage is only intended for small groups and we always inform groups of 6 that it is a bit cramped. However if this is an issue for guests we can provide a separate freezer. We also mention in the details that due to the terrassing the cottage is not suitable for elderly or infirm.
