2 Bedroom Cottage in Seahouses, Northumberland. Close To Harbour

Set in a former smokery, the cottage is in the historic conservation area at the heart of the traditional fishing village of Seahouses, only a short walk from the busy harbour, which offers boat trips to the Farne Islands. An ideal base for exploring the Northumberland Coast, with its stunning beaches, golf courses, many historic castles and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. At the end of the road is the Northumberland Coast path, and early birds can enjoy spectacular sunrises over the North Sea, with views of the Farne Islands and Bamburgh Castle also to be seen. Having been converted from being part of the adjacent smokery, the cottage is equipped to a high standard, and is ideal for either couples or small families. Seahouses offers some excellent friendly pubs and a choice of restaurants all within a short walk of the cottage. If you prefer to cook for yourself, the kitchen is fully equipped, and you can get all the ingredients you need in the village shops.

About Mike & Linda Gordon

Linda and Mike Gordon live in Newcastle. We have three boys, plus a cavalier king charles spaniel and two goldfish.

Linda is a nurse, and Mike advises people on their pensions as a chartered financial planner.

We both love the North East countryside and coast, having both moved to the area before we met and got married in 1997.

Why Mike & Linda Gordon chose Northumberland Coast

We bought Puffin Place in March 2013, both as an investment for our future retirement and in order to be able to use the cottage ourselves. It takes just an hour to get to from our home in Newcastle, and once there we rarely feel the need to use the car.

In the time we have spent in the town, everyone seems very friendly, even by North-East standards, and we have already decided it is somewhere we would like to live one day.

The cottage is tucked away in a quiet location in the oldest part of the village, among the smokeries and fishermen's cottages, but just a very short walk from the bustling harbour and the centre of the town.

Despite its history the cottage had already been fully modernised, and was previously run as a popular holiday let.

What makes this cottage unique

The last surviving smokery in Seaouses is just next door, and as one of Rick Stein's original food heroes they sell smoked salmon and kippers to die for.

For golfers Seahouses Golf Club is 10 minutes walk away, and there are many other excellent courses in the area.

The village has a choice of great pubs and other places to eat and drink, all within easy walking distance from the cottage, as is the harbour, offering boat trips to the Farne Islands, with their puffins, terns, seals and lighthouses. At the end of the road is the Coast Path, and stunning views of the harbour, Bamburgh Castle, and for early birds, the sunrises can be beautiful.

Notes on accommodation: We bought the cottage in March 2013, and are pleased to have been awarded a three star Quality in Tourism rating by Visit England. Downstairs there is an open plan kitchen and living room, while upstairs the two bedrooms and bathroom stretch over the archway beneath. We have equipped the cottage with wifi and telephone, and there are books, DVDs and games to appeal to both children and adults. Outside: Outside there is a courtyard shared with four other cottages, and allocated parking space for one car. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels & linen included, but not for the beach. Mid-week linen change available on request at extra cost. Other: Although we accept well-behaved dogs, we should point out that the cottage is not suitable for large dogs, and does not have a secure outside area to "exercise". However the short walk to the Coast path is well worthwhile, and leads down to a beach.

First impressions were good but looking around the cleanliness was very poor. The bathroom was disgusting, shabby and out of date. The kitchen/lounge area very small, especially when dining table was set. The utensils and crockery are of good quality.

The location was good once you got to managed the archway (other vehicles parked either side of the entrance didn't help though). A short walk to the sea front was good.

The shops were good, especially the fish and chips.

Although booking and contact details were very good, I wouldn't like to recomend the property in the condition it was in.

Puffin Place the perfect holiday cottage with a few minutes walk to the beach

This was the first time we have stayed in a cottage (normally caravan) and can quite easily say we will be back!! This cottage was perfect for our needs just a few minutes walk from the beach and shops and plenty of places to eat. We took our dog, max, who gets very stressed when we go away but as soon as we got there he made himself at home straight away. Seahouses is a fantastic place to go with endless clean beaches. From now on Puffin Place will be our place to stay for a lovely peaceful and relaxing holiday and would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys beautiful unspoilt scenery on your doorstep.

Communication between ourselves and the homeowners were great.

The cottage was cleaned to a high standard with all the modern kitchen facilities at hand.

Lovely and well positioned

Great little house, really well equipped. The lounge/kitchen area is a bit tight, but the bedrooms are both of a good size. All the equipment and furnishings are of good quality. The position of the house is brilliant - the village and beach are within 5 minutes of the front door. Swallow Fish next door is the icing on the cake! I loved Seahouses and the surrounding area.

Peak District

An Ideal Holiday

My two children and I followed the directions easily and found Puffin Place to bean ideal holiday location for the three of us. The parking was fine once the archway was mastered. The cottage was spotless on arrival with everything as detailed and more, including hairdryer, a great selection of crockery and kitchen essentials, gorgeous, soft towels and even a fishing net!

Downstairs is small but as long as you are well organised is very comfortable. I reccommend that you only put the table up when you eat or the children will cover it in junk!! Upstairs was lovely, the bathroom was very modern with lovely seaside touches. My children aged 14 and 10 managed very well in the shared bedroom. The double bedroom was really comfortable too. Plenty of storage for all. A bookcase of books, DVD's for all ages, plenty of current information on local events, places of interest etc

The smokehouse is right next door and occasionally the smoke drifts over, but it is not unpleasant, just makes you hungry!

We enjoyed many trips, joining English Heritage which paid for itself on the trip with visits to Dunstanburgh Castle,Lindisfarne Priory and a stop at Warkworth Castle on the way home. We also had a spooky visit to Chillingham Castle, not my favourite but the children enjoyed it and it's in a lovely location.

The eating establishments were plentiful, Elan Pizzeria were very welcoming as was The Spice House, Neptune for fish and chips and Coxons (despite it looking tiny) serves delicious knickerbocker glories, sundaes and coffees!

My children went horseriding at The Slate House Riding Centre. Neither had ridden before but thoroughly enjoyed the half hour lesson followed by a half hour ride. They went twice!

The beaches are plentiful, spotless and rarely crowded even in the summer holidays.

A very inexpensive 'adventure' was the crabbing down in the harbour, enjoyed by all ages! Great fun when everyone lets the crabs go and they race down the jetty to the sea!

Thank you Mike and Linda, you were very helpful with the booking, and when I asked the children this year where they wanted to go there was no hesitation - ''Puffin Place!'' So we are coming back, hopefully to repeat some of the lovely trips we had last year but also to do some of the ones we didn't get round to, a visit to the Farne Islands, Bamburgh Castle and even more gorgeous beaches.

Can't wait till August.
