Le Lys is a recently refurbished "bijou" stone gite set in a private garden with ample outdoor space for relaxing and alfresco dining.
Birdsong, red squirrel and deer are frequent occurrence. All those things you miss in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The perfect place to just relax.
There is a good choice of modern supermarkets and small shops within a 10 km radius. A “Welcome Pack” will be provided for your first breakfast and owners will be discretely available nearby to assist you as much as possible.
One of the delights of the Vienne is the overall friendliness of the people as it has not been spoilt by tourism and the welcome you receive is genuine and warm.
Roads and lanes are reasonably flat and free of busy traffic making it enjoyable for walking and cycling. Bicycles are available for guests. Access to the N10 motorway is approximately 10 minutes away by car making it easy to explore the region.
Poitiers (40 minutes by car) is our nearest major city with international airport and train links to central Paris and Charles de Gaulle airport. Use of a car is recommended in this area and major rental companies are located at Poitiers.
We close in October.
Suzanne is a New Zealander and Tony is English. Suzanne taught mathematics at the same time as being a housemistress at Sherborne Girls in Dorset before retiring. Tony had his own business and spent most of his working life travelling North and South America, the Middle East, Australasia, Asia and the Carribean. They decided France was the place for retirement. Each year they spend 3 to 4 months enjoying the New Zealand summer. Suzanne has three grown up children and as with many New Zealanders, they lead cosmopolitan lives and are based around the world. Our gite is ideal for friends and family from overseas but as we enjoy meeting people we are very happy to let it out when we are here.
Suzanne Budd purchased this cottage in 2012
We retired to Normandy in 2010 after having had a holiday home in France for 5 years. Autumn 2012 we decided to move further south. We had holidayed in the Vienne and Deux Sevres regions and enjoyed it immensely, warm weather and the ambiance sold it to us. We headed to our favourite places in the Poitou-Charente and found our home with a gorgeous gite.
We enjoy a rural life without a huge acreage. We chose our house in particular, because we are tucked away in a truly French hamlet. We are still within easy driving distance of markets, restaurants, shops, the coast and larger towns. We think we have found our ideal French home.
Le Lys is a very quiet, tranquil retreat if you are looking for a really relaxing holiday. We have good access to major highways or you can explore the Vienne and Deux Sevres Regions using the byways and lanes. The weather is usually very settled and the region is recognised as having the second most sunshine hours in France. The forest of St Sauvant, nearby was a bastian for the French resistance and many a story is told about those times and other history. We are on the edge of the Gallo-Romain area and the walking routes are a wonderful escape from a busy life. Coffee in nearby St Sauvant is about 25 minutes walk through a leafy canope of forests. ( Drive 5 mins)
"Enjoyable visit to this region. The gite was to the highest standard and all our needs were catered for. Lovely leisurely country walks in the myriad of quiet lanes around Le Lys. We did not venture out on the bicycles. The pizzeria at Couhe was "the best". The salad were super.also. "Maurice and Ann
"We had a most pleasant time at Le Lys. It was quiet and just the place to unwind. After a hectic few weeks of work we couldn't have asked for more in terms of a relaxing break. Suzanne and Tony provided the makings for a lovely breakfast on our first morning and from there the scene was set. We both overslept as the bedroom was quite luxurious and the lack of traffic noise was bliss. Planning another visit soon. " John and Jean
"Thank You for a most amazing break. We enjoyed getting the bicycles for a little time each day. We got lost in the maze of forest tracks.but We enjoyed the balmy evenings sipping wine outdoors. The gite was well equipped and immaculate. A rare find. Roger
The gite was exactly as described on the website, in a quiet garden setting.
Our hosts were very helpful and informative and we would certainly recommend this property to friends.
The Gite is a very charming property, equipped with everything you will need for your stay. The hosts Suzanne and Tony are also very welcoming, charming and very informative about the local area. Just the place to relax, soak up the sunshine and enjoy a good book. Would not hesitate in recommending to family and friends.
When we first arrived at the gite I had a big smile on my face as it was even more lovely than it looked on the photos. The gite felt like a much loved home with some wonderful touches which I loved. We explored the surrounding area enjoying the historic churches and pretty villages and visited Angouleme and Poitiers. We also used the bikes for a pleasant ride around the countryside. Suzanne and Tony were so welcoming, we were provided with a lovely welcome pack and also had a plentiful supply of fresh strawberries from their garden which were delicious. There was plenty of information on trips out and restaurants etc and if you required any further information Suzanne and Tony were able to provide it. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and hope to come back soon.
We recently stayed at this gite in the heart of Poitou-Charentes. It was a lovely place set in beautiful gardens. As city dwellers you immediately notice how tranquil it was as you just heard the bees buzzing around. Our hosts Suzanne and Tony were great and we would have no hesitation in recommending this place for anyone looking for that French Experience. Lots of places nearby to visit if that's your thing and the coastline is also within easy reach.
We had a lovely time here, even though the weather wasn't really on our side. The gite was extremely well appointed and the Welcome Pack was very welcome indeed. The double room was lovely and cool and dark at night as well as being very pretty (as was the whole gite). Tony and Suzanne were extremely helpful and Suzanne spent a long time talking rugby with our son! He talks about Suzanne every time the All Blacks play now! We found lots to do and would thoroughly recommend the outdoor pool at Vivonne and the Velo-rail in Chauvigny (both are lovely towns to visit too). It was lovely to have such welcoming, helpful hosts and we wish them all the very best for this season too. :-)
This was our first visit to this region of France and we could not have chosen a better base. The gite was delightful; clean and very well maintained. We were made to feel very welcome and the 'fizz' and breakfast hamper were particularly welcome!
We made the most of our time here visiting beautiful mediaeval villages and travelling a little further afield to the coast visiting the stunning Ile de Re.
We could not have asked for a better 'base' and would certainly recommend it if you are after a quiet, peaceful and relaxing time.
Le Lys is 1 hour 30 minutes from the coast. The nearest beach is Châtelaillon-Plage. La Rochelle, with the aquarium, is one of the best in France and the famous towers, are a must after a fine seafood lunch. You can either drive or take a boat from La Rochelle to Ile de Ré which is connected to mainland France by an amazing curved bridge toll bridge. Often called the St Tropez of the west coast, it affords kilometres of sandy beaches and the old world charm of St Martin.

Restful nights and relaxing days can be expected in this tranquil region of France in the Vienne bordering the Deux Sevres Region. Explore the countryside walks or cycling or venture forth to the Romanesque villages, towns and cities. The region has many fields of sunflowers [early summer] bordered by wheat fields edged in red poppy. The roads are uncrowded and the towns move at a leisurely pace. Futuroscope, La Rochelle, Poitiers, Cognac, Angouleme are fascinating places if that is your choice on holiday. However this region offers more gentle leisure activities for all ages such as walking, cycling, canoeing relaxation and real experiences of rural France in the smaller villages and towns. You will find beautiful places (bird and animal life you have forgotten) The area caters for special interests such as horse riding, fishing, canoeing etc. There are a variety of mammal, reptile and bird parks in the area including Primates, a donkey sanctuary, snakes, crocodiles and birds of prey.
Local fetes, vide greniers, and festivals in relatively small villages are a reminder that you are in France. It is an area rich in history and culture. For wine lovers it is ideally suited midway between the Loire Valley and the vineyards of Bordeaux with Cognac only 1.5 hours away. If its history you are looking for then this is the region. Within an hour you can find Chateaux, Abbeys and churches dating from Roman times through the Middle Ages to the wars between the monarchies of England and France. Puy De Fou 100 mins away, where you can be transported back in time
If you enjoy food there are some regional specialities in the nearby restaurants: foie gras, duck, a wonderful array of fresh seafood and an excellent choice of local cheeses.
Excellent road, rail and airport services make it a very desirable holiday location for the more discerning traveller, who wants a real French experience. It is the sheer peacefulness of Le Lys, which make it an ideal location for a holiday.
