Lenno Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Walkers' paradise: upmarket farm cottage (2 beds, 2 baths) with sunny terraces

Roveglio (Bramble Farm) is a beautifully restored early 19th century farm. Five minutes drive up from the lakeside town of Lenno, the air is fresh and scented with wild herbs. Instead of traffic you cowbells and crickets.

The Cottage was converted recently for the owners' use, providing a spacious and luxurious home from home for a tranquil break in spring, summer or autumn. Don't take our word for what it offers - please look at the guest comments.

The farm produces single-estate extra virgin olive oil and organic hand-made cheese. The animals are kept downhill away from the domestic buildings - but the dogs, cows, goats and rabbits are a draw for children.

The location is ideal for walks to Madonna del Soccorso, a World Heritage Site (45 minutes) and the steeper route to the hermitage of San Bernadetto (90 minutes). It is only two kilometres from Lenno and a car is essential. Lenno offers a thriving weekly market, supermarkets, banks and a pharmacy, as well as restaurants, bars, a wonderful lido for sunbathing and lake swimming and the breathtaking Villa Balbienello. It is within easy reach by road or ferry of other lakeside towns, each with their own attractions. Lake Como offers something for everyone.

About Jeannie Willan

This is Paul and my daughter Emma getting some new garden furniture ready. We're a Manchester-based, Anglo-Italian family. I visited Lake Como while inter-railing and said then "this is a place I could retire to". Imagine my surprise when my then fiancé brought me to see his old family home.

We have been spending a part of our holidays here ever since, involving teenage boys, small children and now teenage girls - not to mention a large number of friends and family members. It simply is a place to share.

And even after all these years we are still finding new delights and things to do on Lake Como. We love the swimming, the walking, the ice-creams, the food, the music and above all the warmth and tranquillity. It would give me enormous pleasure to be able to talk to you, to answer any questions and help you get the most out of your holiday.

Jeannie Willan purchased this cottage in 1850

Why Jeannie Willan chose Lake Como

Roveglio has been in our family since about 1880 - an ancestor was Mayor of Lenno and the family tomb is in Lenno cemetery. So we have a long-term commitment to both Roveglio and Lake Como.

My mother-in-law spent much of the war here - there was no running water or electricity. She and my father-in-law did renovated the main house in the 1970s as a retirement project and later converted The Cottage in 1996 for their own use.

We took over the management of the farm in 2006 and since then have been focussed on reclaiming the overgrown woodland, improving the pasture and planting more olive trees.

Roveglio has the most amazing views and, because it is uphill from the lake, even on hot days there is a breeze. You do need a car and a bit of confidence to tackle the steep lane.

What makes this cottage unique

Set in fields in the fresh mountain air, Roveglio is only 5 minutes by car from the village of Lenno, 15 minutes by foot (longer climbing uphill back)! You can st off on mountain walks from the door or just relax and read, smelling the wild mint and hearing the cowbells and crickets, The Cottage has both a dining and a sunbathing terrace, as well an area of lawn and access to the garden. And you are very welcome to visit other parts of the farm - see the animals and taste our cheese and olive oil.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We arrived in the dark to twinkling lights below so the sunlit view revealed the following morning was a breathtakingly beautiful surprise. The house is very clean, comfortable and calm and wonderful to return to after walking or exploring. We also got to try cheese made in the farm and find out how it is made. A wonderful trip and can't wait to return!

Hillside location with amazing views of lake como

  • 4 of 5

Just returned from a wonderful week's holiday during August with 2 children aged 10&12 years. The property is comfortable, well laid out and offers all the amenities required for a stay. The owner is extremely helpful and provides excellent customer service. The Italian neighbours who live next to the property and have a small farm were also very welcoming & helpful.

The views from this property are amazing and well worth seeing. I would recommend having a small or medium size car to navigate the steep hillside leading to the property and surrounding roads. Lenno and the lakeside are a walk down a steep hill but manageable. Local public transport options are also excellent should you decide to leave the car at the property during the stay.

There is lots to do locally; walks; boat trips; boat hire; lake swimming; adventure sports or more leisurely mini golf and lido at Mennagio. Lenno has a great gelateria with lots of wonderful flavours requiring a daily visit!

Overall a comfortable property offering amazing views of lake como and a convenient location for exploring locally and further afield to some of the many interesting local towns and cities.

Seeing Lake Como at its sparkling best

  • 5 of 5

The views of the lake from the house were inspirational and a delight, especially when you have all the windows wide open. Being on a small working farm is a true delight, and we were provided with fresh milk and eggs. All very personal, authentic and just a little quirky - just how we like it. The landscape was lush and green, and we were lucky to be there when there were two electrifying and dramatic storms over the lake. Jays, woodpeckers and beautiful butterflies and moths abounded. The house met all of our needs and we enjoyed it immensely. We'll be back for sure!

Idyllic Property

  • 5 of 5

we have stayed at this property several times and it is fantastic with breath-taking views over Lake Como.

The cottage is well-furnished, scrupulously clean and contains everything a family could want in an idyllic location.

We loved evenings sitting on one of the patios gazing at the amazing view whilst enjoying the property's delicious own-produced olive oil and cheese with a glass of local vino.

The cottage sits in its own substantial grounds and yet restaurants, lidos and grand villas are merely a short walk away to explore. Make sure you hire a boat on the lake for a day to enjoy a magical experience.

Beautiful cottage - breathtaking views

  • 5 of 5

We spent the second week of our honeymoon at Roveglio after spending the first week travelling around Italian cities and were ready for a change of pace. Jeannie, the owner, had been extremely helpful and provided us with excellent directions from Milan Airport as well as answering any queries we had. When we arrived at the cottage we were met by the lady from the farm next door who gave us the key and showed us in to the property. We were delighted with the property. It was light and airy and very clean. There was also a pack with lots of information on things to do and see and places to eat etc. We cracked open a bottle of Prosecco (from the little supermarket at the bottom of the hill) and ventured out on to the balcony terrace. The views are completely stunning and photographs simply do not do them justice! At the time we stayed the weather was beautiful, warm sunshine and blue skies but the mountains were still snow capped, it really was breathtaking. We were also able to purchase various items of dairy produce from the farm next door and they were very accommodating and happy to show us round the farm.

There is plenty to do and explore in the village. There is a delightful local market on Tuesday mornings where we purchased some lovely fish and vegetables. There are many delightful public walks of varying levels of effort/length to take in the surrounding sights as well as activities and cafes around the lake. We would recommend the little boat trip over the lake to Villa del Balbianello (Star Wars fans may recognise the view from the balcony there!).

Jeannie also gave us details of plenty of things on offer just a short drive away but we found on this occasion that we simply didn't get chance! We will just have to go back again to continue where we left off!

Peace Personified

  • 5 of 5

This "cottage" is charming, spacious, and peaceful with superb views of the lake and mountains. Sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine was a wonderful thing. The lake, restaurants and shops are nearby and a walk down the hill to the bakery and back an enjoyable stroll. I could not recommend it more.

Lenno has its own Lido (private beach and lake swimming, free for children), as well as two small public beaches. 5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walking. There are swimming pools at the Cadenabbia Lido and at Gran Hotel Tremezzo (15minutes drive). Menaggio Lido (north of the town) is the most spacious, with a pool and paddling pool (bathing cap required), play area, small beach and restaurant.

The nearest airport is Milan Malpensa (Milan Linate is considerably further), between 70 and 90 minutes driving time. Bergamo is only a little further and less than 90 minutes driving time. A car is essential - although only 5 minutes from the lakeside, the road up is steep and narrow. Detailed directions will be provided to visitors.

The centre of Lenno is two kilometres from Roveglio. Tremezzo with the Famous Villa Carlotta is approx 8 kilometres to the north and Menaggio a further 5 kilometres beyond this. Varenna and Bellagio are close as the crow flies but the first lies on the east shore, the second on the central peninsula, both reached by regular ferries (car and pedestrian). The medieval walled city of Como is 22 kilometres to the south and Milan some 45 kilometres to the south.

Further Details:

Lake Como offers something for everyone - glamour and retreat for the Hollywood "A" list and other celebrities, beauty, tranquillity and wonderful food, as well as a variety of activities for families. Full details of what is available as well as a detailed description of the amenities of Lenno are available in a file in the Cottage as well as on our website.
