Villa Zalia is an immaculate, three bedroom villa with two private pools in large private grounds at the edge of Alcaucin, a typical Andalusian white village, one hour from Malaga. The house is fully equipped with modern appliances, Gas BBQ, Internet and AC/Heating in all rooms. The large balcony and covered terrace and pool areas are great places to relax and offer far reaching mountain and lake views.

About Dr. Stephan Engel

It has always been my dream to live in southern Spain, somewhere close to the Mediterranean. After 30 years of working for an international oil company, I finally managed to realise this dream, and we are now living in a rural property not too far from Alcaucin. I am a geoscientist by background, with a love for the outdoors and nature in general.

Following my retirement, my wife and I have now taken over management of Villa Zalia, and are aiming to provide our guests with a great holiday experience.

We had a fantastic time staying at the villa in such a beautiful setting. I have stayed at several different villas across andalucia and this is by far the best I've experienced for views, pools (there's two completely private ones!), kitchen (very well equipped) and rooms (all with air-con which was a life saver in 35 degree heat).

Notes on accommodation: Villa Zalia is situated on the slopes of the La Maroma mountain, thus the grounds are steep. The second, larger pool is situated below the house and reached via a short path and set of stairs. It offers a large area for sunbathing, shade, shower and great views as well as privacy. The small pool next to the house is ideal for younger children - but supervision is essential. The house is prepared to a high standard for you with many of those basic necessities you might need provided (basic cooking ingredients, washing powder for example). Outside: If you just want to relax, Villa Zalia is unique in so far as it offers 2 private pools - a smaller one (2m x 3m) right next to the house (great for a quick dip), and a larger pool (8m x 4m) on a terrace slightly below the house. Sun loungers, deck chairs, tables & chairs for outdoor dining, umbrellas etc. are at your disposal. Utility Room: Washing machine & dryer, iron & board, hoover, drying rack. Cleaning / Towels / Linen: Property is provided with all linen and towels for up to 6 persons. Please bring your own beach towels. For stays of 2 weeks or longer, change of towels & linen will be provided weekly. Other: Large garage used as store for extensive garden and pool furniture, firewood.

Stunning Surroundings

6 of us (2 adults, 1 OAP, 1 teen and 2 children) stayed in the villa for 12 nights and we all had a fantastic holiday. The villa and pools were lovely and clean and we had everything we needed for cooking etc, plus a few extras we werent expecting which is always a bonus. Yes, as one reviewer said, the walk to the pool isnt something a young child could do by themselves, but who would let a child attend a pool on their own anyway? I liked the fact the pool wasnt just outside the back door as it meant i didnt have to worry about one of the children going in without me knowing.

Alcaucin is a beautiful place with great places to eat. Vente la parra on the hill on the main road up and the new bbq restaurant next to the indian palace were our favourites. Arkrights is a great shop for all your bits and bobs and I would recommend Lidl over Eroski for a big shop as the prices seemed a lot better.

Burriana beach, maro beach and torrecilla beach were our favourites. Torrecilla is particularly good if you have children as the water is nice and shallow where as other beaches we visited got deep really quickly. The cable car ride up to the bird of prey centre in Benalmedena is also a must and is the best bird show we have ever seen and we enjoyed the rope bridges of los cahorras, although I would recommend going back through the gorge rather than climb the mountain, especially on a hot day as it is further than you might think with no shade.

All in all we had a fantastic stay and there is plenty to do in the surrounding area but you will definitely need a car if you stay here as for us, even the town didnt seem like a walkable distance although I know some reviewers have said they have done it. And the aircon was an extra we would definitely make sure we werent without when we rent a villa again, made such a difference especially when we were trying to sleep.

A very pleasant holiday in a wonderful environment

Villa Zalia is located in a beautiful area of Spain, up in the mountains north of Malaga near the lovely typical Spanish Village of Alcoucim. The villa is a couple of miles from the centre of the village along a track which winds along the side of the mountain giving wonderful views. The village has some lovely eating bars/restaurants and for real value for money visit "The Ranch". The villa itself has all the amenities one needs for a family holiday and the second very large swimming pool below the villa was a great hit with the children. We do feel that overall the villa offers a good venue but is a little tired and would benefit from some work on decoration etc.

Great location near lovely Alcaucin

This bright, airy and spacious villa has fantastic views across to Lake Vinuela and Comares. It has a well equipped kitchen and all you will need for a relaxing holiday break. The pretty village of Alcaucin is a not too challenging 25 minute walk away. There are several great places to eat as well as a small supermarket and a bank with an ATM

Get away from it all

The villa is as described by the owner and as per the previous reviews. Totally relaxing place away from the maddening crowds. The views are tremendous. The lovely village of Alcaucin is only 15 mins walk away.

spacious and private property

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this villa. A very relaxing stay in a remote area. A car is essential due to distance and terrain from nearest village. Villa has great amenities including washing machine, tumble drier, a well equipped kitchen, wi-fi and air con. Villa is large and airy and has fantastic views. Good supermarkets in Velez Malaga approx. 20 minutes away by car. Overall we all had a very nice and relaxing stay like a home away from home.

Great Villa perfect country escape

The photographs don't do justice to this villa, it's much larger than it looks and the location is perfect just outside the village and in easy walking distance.

The views are exceptional with so many places around the property to sit and take it al in.

It is fully equipped with almost every thing you could ever need

The two pools are a nice touch one on the rear of the villa is just a plunge pool, but a great place to sit drinking a glass or two bubbles.

The second pool is much larger with lots of areas to sit and take in the Rays, with an area of shade when you need it.

Coast/Beach:

The well maintained beaches of Torre del Mar are just 20 mins away. For the more adventurous, take a slightly longer drive towards Nerja and explore the beautiful sandy coves near Mara. These offer the clearest water, excellent snorkelling and some fantastic scenery.

Travel:

Use of a car is essential! The nearest airport is Malaga, some 60 km, first along the coastal motorway then inland on a good road. The last 1 km is on a graded, well maintained road which serves many properties in the area.

We will provide detailed route description from Malaga airport to Villa Zalia upon completion of the reservation.

Distances:

Alcaucin is a picturesque small town, the centre of which is a 5 min drive or 20 min walk from the villa. It offers a variety of local restaurants and bars, banking and shopping for day to day supplies. The El Ingenio Mall, 20 mins towards the coast, contains a large modern supermarket, designer stores, fast food etc.

The beautiful cities of Malaga, Granada, Antequera are just an hour away. Cordoba, Sevilla and Ronda require a slightly longer drive, but can easily be visited on a day trip.

Further Details:

Villa Zalia is not just for summer, but can be the starting point for exciting vacations all year round. The two pools and nearby beaches are the places to be during hot summer days. Spring, autumn and usually mild winters are the times for sightseeing and more physical activities. For the nature enthusiast, active hiker or geocacher, Villa Zalia offers paradise. The possibilities during the cooler seasons are endless. You can begin your hike at the house, a 20 min walk will bring you to the edge the National Park. Or, a short drive will take you into the Alcazarra area, a picnic site and starting point for hikes to the top of the Maroma. The Zafarraya pass, on the way to Granada, offers beautiful scenery, mountain flora and fauna and marked hiking trails. If you want to wander further afield, try the National Park of El Torcal with amazing limestone formations, the hot springs in Alhama de Granada or the lakes of Fuente de La Piedra with thousands of breeding flamingoes in spring. And, as mentioned earlier, the cities of Granada, Antequera, Cordoba and Sevilla make for excellent day trips.

A full refund will be given for cancellations up to 6 weeks prior to commencement of the lease. Cancellations between 6 and 2 weeks before incur a 20% charge. 50% of the rental fee is charged if cancelled less than 2 weeks before the start of the lease.

Changeover Day:
Preferably on Saturdays, though we will attempt to accommodate other days. Check-in after 4 pm., check-out by 11:00 am. If more flexible arrangement is needed please discuss with owner or caretaker.

Notes on prices:
Payment of the equivalent Euro amount into German or Spanish bank account will be accepted. A 10% discount will be given for 2nd and 3rd week. Request for long term rentals will be considered:
