Chocolate box cottage in the heart of the market town of Saffron Walden and yet situated in a quiet back street a few minutes walk away from the shops and restaurants of the town. The cottage has recently undergone extensive renovation to include new kitchen, bathroom and en-suite yet retains all of its historic character. The cottage is heavily beamed with a large inglenook fireplace to two rooms, oak floors to the downstairs. It has a small and very private courtyard garden. The property has on road parking available outside. Ideally situated to explore Saffron Walden and Cambridge and London is easily accessed by the local station Audley End which is a 5 minute drive away from the cottage.

About Deborah Wheatley

This cottage was bought to be my personal bolt hole when visiting England and also a home to share with my friends and family as I am currently living in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I have dual British and American citizenship having moved to the USA 17 years ago.

The cottage is my personal pride and joy and it will be a pleasure for me to share it with you.

Why Deborah Wheatley chose Essex

I fell in love with the cottage in 2012 while visiting Saffron Walden; it was so pretty with roses around the door and only a 5 minute walk from the town's restaurants and shops. I had lived in Saffron Walden before moving to Chicago, USA in 1999 and now live in Fort Lauderdale , Florida. I am very happy to have bought the cottage with a view to my husband and I retiring there in a few years time.

I love Saffron Walden with its historic centre and market place and the cottage's location, though in a very quiet street, is only a few minutes from the shops, market place, pubs and restaurants making it unnecessary to drive anywhere when in town. The cottage is only 25 minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge and a 45 minute train ride to the London Underground.

What makes this cottage unique

If you are looking for a romantic period cottage to spend a week or weekend this cottage is an ideal match. 15th century charm with brand new plumbing,kitchen and bathrooms.

It's location between Cambridge and London make it an ideal base for visiting the UK as the Audley End train station with its regular service to both cities is a 10 minute drive away making it unnecessary to drive into the cities. It is also perfectly situated for touring the East Anglia area including Suffolk and Norfolk.

The cottage oozes character from every beam and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Audley End Park is only a 5 minute walk away from the cottage meaning you can enjoy the English countryside as well as all that the town itself offers.

Outside: Property has a small private courtyard garden with outdoor table and seating for six. Barbecue available. Courtyard has garden border which is heavily planted. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linens are included with weekly cleaning and change of linens. Other: Dining room has an extendable dining table with seating for 6 and is open plan to the kitchen. Inglenook fireplace with electric fire.

Absolutely beautiful cottage in a fantastic location

We had a lovely stay at Drake Cottage and were reluctant to leave our 'home away from home'. Lucy the housekeeper met us at the property to show us around and answer any questions. We love the authenticity of the cottage which is beautifully presented and very comfortable. Our only issue was that parking was difficult as there was no designated parking for residents and others tended to use the parking spaces in front of the cottage. Overall we loved it and would definitely re-book Drake Cottage when we come back. Thank you Deb for sharing your lovely cottage with us.

Owner's Response: Dear Melanie, so glad that you loved Drake Cottage and very sorry to hear you had issues with parking. It is difficult when so many of the smaller older cottages do not have designated parking and often more than 2 cars per household. I will be chatting with my neighbours to see what can be done. It seems to be an on going problem in the medieval part of Saffron Walden and just wish I had an easy fix. I so hope it didn't spoil things too much for you. I'm just glad that Swan Meadow public parking is an easy 3 minute walk away for when this does occasionally happen. A charming "fairy tale" cottage with 21 st century facilities.

My Belgian young family loved the location of Drake Cottage. They loved the prettyiness and excellent facilities within the cottage. In all the cottage was a wonderful unique holiday. They are already hoping to be able to return.

Prepared by excellent communications between Deb Wheatley and ourselves beforehand, we enjoyed the fine holiday we expected.

The cottage's great character, it's position in the town, the friendliness of the town's inhabitants, the fascinating Fry Gallery and the surrounding characterful and culturally rich villages, galleries etc.made the week very special!

Booking by conventional mail, email or telephone. Deposit on confirmation. Full payment 6 weeks prior to stay. Sorry we only accept payment by cheque or by electronic transfer at the moment.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day Friday. Weekend bookings may be possible out of high season.
Arrival after 4 p.m. and departure before 10 a.m.

Notes on prices:
Weekends and short breaks available out of high season by arrangement. The cottage if available is charged pro rata per night for use of two bedrooms with an additional £20 charged per person on the total price for use of the sofa bed. Apologies but this is due to laundry and housekeeping costs. Do please enquire.
Your deposit is non refundable but please contact us if you do have to cancel and if we get a replacement booking we are happy to give you a refund.
