Idyllic - Your own personal version of "The Holiday"

  • 5 of 5

Drake Cottage was truly a dream come true for my husband and me. The location is perfect, all within a 5-minute walk of all that the town has to offer, including multiple restaurants, the supermarket, fish and chip shop, etc. Then the house! This cottage has been renovated with such care for detail and character you can tell the owner really cares. The bathtub was heavenly, and now nothing quite compares back in America! For a relaxing, quaint getaway don't hesitate to book Drake Cottage. We will be back.

Darling, Delightful Drake Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here 6 nights and have been very comfortable. Drake Cottage is just a short walk from Saffron Walden’s Town Square and services, and on Tuesday evening we heard the most joyful church bells pealing! Turned out to be the St. Mary’s bell ringers practicing! A lovely place to stay.

Owner's Response: Hi Doris, Thank you for your lovely review and I do hope you both had a wonderful time and got to hear much music. Nothing says home to me more than when I hear those St Mary's church bells ringing and in fact they will be ringing the bells for my daughter's wedding blessing very soon. In the summer I like to sit out in the courtyard and listen to those bells; they practice on a Tuesday evening and most Saturdays. Safe trip home and do come back and visit us again one day. Best wishes Deb

We Loved It !

  • 5 of 5

Our four night stay exceeded our expectations.

The cottage is a delight and it's location is perfect for discovering the many attractions of Saffron Walden and nearby villages.

We were very comfortable and we soon got used to " ducking" under the low beams.

The property is just as described and it's quite clear that it's much loved.

It was carefully prepared for our arrival. We found it to be well equipped and enjoyed cooking in the charming kitchen after buying fresh produce from the great little Saturday morning market.. (I think it's held on Tuesdays too.)

We visited the Fry Gallery twice and it's highly recommended for anyone interested in the artists of Great Bardfield. Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden to name my favourites. It's closed now for winter but Great Bardfield makes for a worthwhile visit. The bookshop will give you insights into the artists who lived there and a cup of coffee too.

Thaxted is a beautiful and interesting village. You can pick up a village guide in the splendid church which must not be missed.

We were fortunate to be visiting when the Haverhill Silver Band were holding a concert in Thaxted one evening which was most enjoyable.

Make sure you visit Finchingfield too, another attractive village.

Equally we were happy to spend a day exploring Saffron Walden and were delighted to discover beautiful gardens, a great local museum, 2 mazes, a labyrinth, and outstanding architecture at every turn.

What a happy few days we had where everything exceeded our expectations.

We are so pleased we found Drake Cottage and we hope to return one day.

Owner's Response: Dear Wendy, Thank you so much for your wonderful review of Drake Cottage and indeed the Saffron Walden area and you are exactly right, I love the cottage, the town and the local area with all that it has to offer. You're right the market is held on a Saturday and a Tuesday and it's always fun walking round, browsing and making a few purchases of the local produce though there is always so much more on offer at the other stalls. The white metal bench and table that sit out in the cottage's courtyard came from a Saturday browsing session. I always have to walk round the Bridge End Garden maze even though I know it now like the back of my hand. Now we have Saffron Screen and Saffron Hall there is always something on in the town to go to. Not to mention the wonderful musical events that are held at St Mary's Church which is only a minutes walk from Drake Cottage. It is best though to look online at Saffron Hall's website for tickets to events as soon as you have booked a stay with us as they do sell out quickly. Thank you again and come back soon to visit us.

cottage Saffron Walden

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the whole Saffron Walden experience - the cottage and the town. The cottage has character and is comfortable and well equipped with quality furniture and appliances with instruction books (thankyou). The bed rooms are attractively decorated with good linen and towels. We always had plenty of hot water for showers. After a day's outing, we always found a parking space outside the cottage.

About Deborah Wheatley

This cottage was bought to be my personal bolt hole when visiting England and also a home to share with my friends and family as I am currently living in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I have dual British and American citizenship having moved to the USA 17 years ago.

The cottage is my personal pride and joy and it will be a pleasure for me to share it with you.

Deborah Wheatley purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Deborah Wheatley chose Saffron Walden

I fell in love with the cottage in 2012 while visiting Saffron Walden; it was so pretty with roses around the door and only a 5 minute walk from the town's restaurants and shops. I had lived in Saffron Walden before moving to Chicago, USA in 1999 and now live in Fort Lauderdale , Florida. I am very happy to have bought the cottage with a view to my husband and I retiring there in a few years time.

I love Saffron Walden with its historic centre and market place and the cottage's location, though in a very quiet street, is only a few minutes from the shops, market place, pubs and restaurants making it unnecessary to drive anywhere when in town. The cottage is only 25 minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge and a 45 minute train ride to the London Underground.

What makes this cottage unique

If you are looking for a romantic period cottage to spend a week or weekend this cottage is an ideal match. 15th century charm with brand new plumbing, kitchen and bathrooms.

It's location between Cambridge and London make it an ideal base for visiting the UK as the Audley End train station with its regular service to both cities is a 10 minute drive away making it unnecessary to drive into the cities. It is also perfectly situated for touring the East Anglia area including Suffolk and Norfolk.

The cottage oozes character from every beam and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Audley End Park is only a 5 minute walk away from the cottage meaning you can enjoy the English countryside as well as all that the town itself offers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We returned yesterday from such a special week at Drake Cottage, we all adored your home and the way it was fitted out and decorated. Lucy was more than helpful and was on hand to welcome us on the 22nd, We were so happy there over Christmas. The restoration you have done is so authentic and in keeping with the cottage

In short, we were so sorry to leave, you have such a magical place there." Peter M December 2013

"Seriously, I can honestly say that it is as good as it can be and there are no other improvements I would make or suggest. We have fallen in love with Drake Cottage. We look forward to using it as a Saffron Walden base in the future, bookings permitting, as I just know once word gets properly out you and it will be very popular. Thank you for your kindness."
