Resorts : Haraki Bay / Agathi Beach: At 4km, Haraki Bay is your nearest resort. Leave the car in the square, wander down past the church, and one of the most beautiful horseshoe bays in Greece will open out before you. Take a walk along the pedestrian only promenade with its single row of laid-back tavernas and friendly family run restaurants. The bay is overlooked by the ruins of Pheraklos Castle, which provide an especially dramatic backdrop when lit up at night. During the day, some tavernas will offer you free use of their sunbeds and parasols if you make good use of their bar facilities!

Also at 4km are the soft golden sands of Agathi Beach, backed by nothing but mountains and sand dunes. The sea is warm, shallow and clear, providing safe swimming for all, and great snorkelling. Sunbeds and parasols are available to rent, and not overcrowded, and there is a choice of 3 licensed marquee style-tavernas serving everything from cold drinks to a 3 course meal at very reasonable prices. Perfect family beach resort!

A free basic welcome pack is provided for your arrival, or the kitchen can be stocked to your order at cost, leaving you more time to enjoy your stay.

An introductory tour of the village and the two nearby resorts is provided free, and you will find guide books, information and maps in the house should you wish to venture further afield.

Local Transport : A car is highly recommended for your stay, though not completely essential. Two well maintained bicycles are provided free of charge. Hitch hiking is still a good way to get around the island during the day.

The bus services through the village are regular (hourly) if not entirely punctual, and will take you to Rhodes Town, Lindos and all points between for just a few euros.

Safety advice............

Motorcyclists beware! Wear helmets, and spend a few Euro extra on a trials bike, or at least something with full sized wheels. Scooters and step-throughs have a tendency to fish-tail without warning when the roads get dusty.

Steer clear of quad bikes, they are NOT fun; they are underpowered and roll over at the drop of a hat.

About Martin Kerry

50 something former technician. In 2006, I went in search of a little bit of paradise, and found it. As well as the Old Olive Press, I have refurbished two other houses in Malona, and I now take care of 6 other holiday rental properties in the village for English and Greek owners. So much for early retirement !!!

Martin Kerry purchased this house in 2006

Why Martin Kerry chose Rhodes

The Old Olive Press was a derelict when I found it. However, it had a bit of history about it. Following a devastating earthquake in 1887, Malona and the neighbouring village of Maseri were completely destroyed. The villagers were persuaded to stay and rebuild by the local priest, using stone from the Templar Knights castle at nearby Haraki. The Old Olive Press was one of the first new buildings constructed in 1888, helping to re-establish the local economy, and the village of Malona.

What makes this house unique

Being situated on one of the oldest lanes in the village, the houses on both sides have courtyards, giving a good feeling of openness and space. The lane is entirely residential, and is not on a 'through route' to anywhere, so there is no traffic, and plenty of room to park. The commercial centre of the village is a 200m walk, as is the village square, where festivals are held throughout the year. I developed the roof terrace in 2007 to take advantage of the cool evening breezes and great views of the mountains. In late summer and autumn, the breeze brings with it the smell of wild herbs and pine. There is also a drinks fridge, soft lighting, and a CD/USB player, so after a meal at one of the excellent tavernas in the area you can settle down for a serious nights chilling !!!

Best vacation ever.

We stayed here years ago, and while looking around the site I remembered I'd never left a review! Yikes! We had such a lovely time in Malona and were so well taken care of. The house is wonderfully cozy and gorgeous. Everything we needed was there, and Martin was very kind about showing us around the area and suggesting good places to eat and things to see. We stayed with our son who was a toddler at the time. He was enchanted with the beach and pleased that there was a piano for singing along with and DVDs for watching on the one rainy day we weathered while there. The property is within an easy distance of two excellent beaches where we spent the majority of our time. We did travel into Rhodes City and into Lindos, but honestly we wished we had just stayed in the immediate area. It was infinitely more relaxing and fun than traipsing around with a million other tourists in the higher traffic areas. The town of Malona itself is a gem. When we were there, at least, there was a truly lovely restaurant on the main street where old men sit and play cards and you can order delicious food to either eat there or take back to the house which is an easy walk away. Everyone in the area was so kind, remembering us from the day before and being super sweet to our son. We honestly couldn't have had a nicer time, and we hope to someday be able to return.

Rustikt och fint hus i by med lugn atmosfär.

  • 5 of 5

Tack Martin! Vi kommer säkerligen att återvända....

/Marie & Malena

Alles super

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful house in an authentic Greek village

  • 5 of 5

From May 7th to May 28th 2015 we spent three wonderful weeks in Martin’s house at Malona.

It was a perfect mixture of relaxing, reading and enjoying the authentic Greek life in Malona. On some days we were hiking in the mountains, watching birds, smelling the fantastic fragrance of wild sage, rosemary, thyme, and lavender, being happy about the millions of blooming flowers. Exploring the island by car on small streets without other tourists, sightseeing (with other tourists) and sweet laziness completed our daily program.

In the evening we liked to cook with fresh Greek food in Martin’s perfectly equipped kitchen. We had our diner and wine in front of the house or at the roof garden - listening to the little owl in the neighbourhood and looking at the mountains around Malona.

Time flew during our holiday and we enjoyed every day very much.

Thanks a lot to Martin and his parents Brenda and Mike. We miss your kind regards in the morning from the other site of the street. If we can manage, we will come back as soon as possible.

Pristine house in a peaceful village

  • 5 of 5

We were really excited to arrive at the house and we were not disappointed. The house is more impressive than the photos show. The house was extremely clean and very well maintained with everything in it that you would need for a holiday.

The main bedroom on the mezzanine floor overlooks the lounge and kitchen which we really liked. The second bedroom is accessible by going up to the veranda which could be a problem for larger groups but we only required one bedroom. It is possible however to sleep in the lounge as there is a double bed settee/ 2 singles but this could be impractical as the main door is located in the lounge, As a couple it was perfect for us! The jacuzzi bath is lovely after a day trip out.

A car is essential to get to local beaches as well as explore Rhodes- which is well worth doing.

A day trip to Rhodes town is a nice day out. Other places worth visiting are Butterfly valley and Prasonisi. Lindos is a lovely place and is worth going to during the day as well as just for food in the evening- about 15 minute drive.

Our favourite beach was Plakia, near Pefkos- a small quiet beach.

Martin is very helpful and is on hand if you need help at any time.

A calm and beautiful holiday home!

  • 5 of 5

This residence is a traditional village house in Malona, beautifully and tastefully restored by Martin, the friendly and helpful owner. We stayed two weeks in May 2014 and enjoyed every single day. The house is quite spatious with living room and large kitchen on the ground level and a sleeping room with large double bed on a platform upstairs. A nice and fully equipped bathroom is underneath that platform in the middle of the house between the lounge and the kitchen. Beds for two more persons could be made available on the sofas in the lounge. A (digital) grand piano is available in the living room, and Martin even provided a guitar in addition, so it is the ideal holiday flat (not only) for musicians. The kitchen is absolutely fully equipped, and everything for cooking, eating and drinking is available in small supermarkets in Malona. Furthermore, even that small village offers several nice bars and restaurants for going out, as does the closest village on the shore, Haraki Beach.

A rented car is highly recommended, most convenient to arrange with Haraki Car Hire in the next village on the shore with nice beaches, ca. 5 km away from the house. Their cars can be picked up at the airport for no extra charges.

Rhodes is a relatively small island but has nice landscapes, on the shorelines as well as inland. So hiking is definitely an option besides of enjoying the sea, but the rented car is needed (or strongly recommeded) to access the starting points of hiking tours. Furthermore, the very friendly local people apparently do not bother much about marking hiking trails (they would probaly find the idea of hiking absurd ;-), so a good guide book (with GPS coordinates) or personal guidance with a group are recommended.

Overall, this was five-star for us without any doubts or restrictions. Thank you Martin & family!

Owner's Response: Hi Michael and Ruth, Thank you for your kind words. I have no visitors for the next 2 weeks, so after reading your review I have decided to take a short holiday there, myself ! I hope you have lots of sunshine in Germany this summer. If not, you know where to come. You will always be welcome in Malona.

Car: recommended

Malona is a quiet unspoilt village set amongst orange groves, 5 minutes drive from the golden sands of Agathi Beach, and the beautiful bay of Haraki, overlooked by Pheraklos Castle. The ancient capital of Lindos and stunning St.Pauls Bay are only 10 minutes drive. Half way up the eastern coast, Malona is the perfect base from which to explore the whole island.

Less than 60 minutes in the car will find you exploring the battlements of Rhodes Town in the north, wine-tasting on the western slopes of Mount Attaviros, or marvelling at the skill of the kite-surfers who come from all over the world to catch the waves at Prassonisi on the southern tip of the island. Also ideal as a base for hiking or cycling, a five min walk will see you spotting honey buzzards on a quiet mountain road, or scrumping the odd orange as you wander the old olive tracks.

The village has a good restaurant, 3 small bars, 1 bakery, 4 mini markets, an English speaking pharmacist and a post-office.

Golf: Afandou Golf Course is approximately 15 km north of the village just off the main road. The fairways can be a little on the brown side at high season, but the greens are kept reasonably green. Not exactly St Andrews, but if you can't go a week without a round, it's there. And yes, it does have a nineteenth hole !
