"Helidoni" is a town house set in a quiet square in the old town, only a short walking distance from the shops and tavernas on the waterfront. The house has been newly restored and decorated to a high standard to provide spacious, comfortable accommodation over 3 floors. The two bedrooms, both en suite, are on the ground floor where it is cool and quiet. This leaves the two floors above with their views of the bay available for easy living. The outside living space incorporates a balcony and a terrace on the middle floor, kitchen/dining floor and a large roof terrace on the top, sitting room floor, all face west.

About Hedley Piper

My husband and I are now retired and share our time between Devon, Poros, sailing in the Aegean sea and visiting our far flung families.

We have always been fortunate enough to live somewhere near water. When we visited Poros, we immediately felt at home. Life on the island is easy, comfortable and safe with a laid back atmosphere but there is always a bustle in the town centre.

Occasionally we take a car and explore the local antiquities of the Peloponnese or the Methana peninsula. Normally we are content to enjoy the amenities of Poros; exploring the island on foot, discovering secret pathways and hidden coves, swimming in the warm clear waters and relaxing and enjoying sitting in one of the many cafes or on our own roof terrace with our cafe frappes while watching the world go by. One of the most enjoyable pastimes is doing the 'evening promenade' after dinner, slowly making our way around the island while savouring one of the many flavours of ice cream available from our local gelateria - my favourite is the mastika - especially when topped with sour cherry sauce.

Why Hedley Piper chose Greece

We had been sailing in Greece a number of times so when we decided to buy a boat, or a share in one, we looked in the marinas near Athens and then the nearby islands of the Saronic Gulf.

While visiting Poros we realized how beautiful it is; green and pine covered and awash with wild flowers; strikingly red anemones in early spring and blousey poppies later in the summer.

Originally we had no intention of buying a house but we enjoyed the atmosphere of Poros, appreciated its proximity to the mainland and its accessibility all year round so, after we had a boat share, we bought a townhouse to restore.

We have owned the house since 2006 and are very pleased that we selected a quiet residential neighbourhood overlooking a small square. It is high enough for good views and a peaceful atmosphere yet low enough to have easy access to the local amenities. We still take great pleasure in adjusting and adding things to enhance that feeling of a home away from home.

What makes this house unique

Helidoni is just high enough up the hill of Poros town to have wonderful western views from the middle and upper floors, but not too far to walk to get home after an evening in one of the many family-run tavernas along the waterfront or in the town centre at the top of the island, both just a few minutes walk from the house. At the house there is plenty of outdoor space for al fresco dining and relaxing. Inside, the open plan layout, with marble and stone floors, open staircases and comfortable furnishings, all add to the feeling of spaciousness.

Poros Island is unique in that it has a vibrant resident population year round and daily transport services between it and the Athens's port of Pireaus. It takes just over an hour to reach the island by hydrofoil, 2 hours and a bit by ferry and just over 2 hours by car from the airport to Galatas.

We also enjoy exploring the mainland or the Peloponnese which is only a short ferry ride across the channel - many antiquities are within an hour of Poros.

  • Description of sleeping capacity: Sleeps 4 (2 Bedrooms) Notes on bedrooms: Both the king and the double bedrooms have en suite shower rooms and plenty of storage space. The double bedroom also has a single width pull-out bed for those in your party who do not wish to share a double bed. Located on the ground floor, the bedrooms are cool in the summer and the ceiling fans and air conditioner/heaters ensure a good night's sleep any time of year.

Notes on accommodation: The house has 2 entrances. The main entrance opens onto the middle floor where there is an open plan kitchen/dining area and a west facing balcony with a cafe table and 2 chairs and a terrace that has a dining table and seating. The kitchen is fully equipped for 4 people. The second entrance is on the ground floor, which is convenient for arrival and departure with your bags. The 2 en suite bedrooms are on the ground floor, both with air conditioners, ceiling fans and plenty of storage space. The front bedroom has a king size bed and the back bedroom a double. The en suite shower rooms are fully tiled and equipped with showers, wc and basins. All linens are provided, including beach towels. Outside: All outside areas face west and so enjoy the afternoon and evening sun. There is a balcony and a terrace, in shade, off the middle floor kitchen/dining area upstairs and a large roof terrace off the lounge on the top floor. Two chairs, a table, and a removable shade in the form of a light weight clip up sun screen are provided. There are director's chairs inside on each floor which may be taken outside for extra seating. Utility Room: There is no utility room but the local laundry is close by. A folding drying rack is provided for handwashing and towels. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen, towels and beach towels are provided. The property is cleaned and the linen changed weekly - more often by arrangement.

The perfect getaway!

This is my third visit to Poros and to Helidoni House and I am never disappointed. The amenities are just perfect for a holiday with all the comforts of home (especially now that the wi-fi has been installed). I always feel so welcome by the owners and the island.

Thank you to the owners for the suggestion to check out Poseidon and their Greek night. I really enjoyed the music and traditional dancers, it was a lovely evening.

Sad to leave but can't wait to come back.

Escape from reality

We were looking for a relaxing break, where we could live comfortably, enjoy leisurely walks, swim in warm sea, explore remote villages and eat well in local restaurants. This holiday provided all of those things and lots more besides.

The house itself is perfectly designed, with plenty of space, attractive furnishings, wonderful views, lovely sitting out areas and all that is needed for a perfect Greek holiday experience. We made friends with local restaurant owners who welcomed us like old buddies on our second visit. The owners gave us some great ideas about places to visit and how to get there. It was delightful!

Beautiful Home! Well decorated and gorgeous view! Bang on with restaurant recommendations and hosts truly care about their guests. My husband and I loved our stay and would return in a heart beat! Home had everything we could ever want or ask for on our vacation to Greece.

Perfect Holiday Home

Exactly what we wanted and everything it says its is. The pictures shown on this site are how it is. Everything and more for a relaxing holiday. Lots of wonderful ideas from the owners so helpful with places of interest - all of which we visited. Wonderful tavernas a very short walk away and on returning to sit on the terrac, with a glass of wine, with the views to watch over the harbour and the next islands, a perfect ending to a perfect day. Poros is a very pretty island with lots of places to visit and ferries to take you to nearby islands for a day out. Everyone so friendly. There is a quiet end of the harbour where the house is with tavernas above and below but a wander further into town you find the hustle and bustle of yachts coming and going. Certainly would recommend to anyone.

Perfect little getaway!

This is our second time visiting Poros and Helidoni House, and it once again did not disappoint.

Centrally located, this townhouse is steps away from the ferry docks, the town of Poros, restaurants, groceries, etc.

The place is extremely well kept, clean and comes with all the basic amenities (i.e. dishes, linens, beach towels, coffee, tea, olive oil, spices, ipod dock, etc.).

We visited with another couple, and there was plenty of room, it was also nice to have our own on-suite bathrooms.

With winter on its way in Canada, we took all the sunshine that we could from the amazing rooftop patio, simply stunning view.

Our hosts, Ruth and Hedley, we very helpful during the planning process, updating us on ferry/hydrofoil schedules, and providing recommendations on laundry services, restaurants, activities (we rented 4-wheelers and toured the island and went to Kanali Beach - also only a 10 minute walk).

Sad to leave after an amazing 6 night stay, but can't wait to start planning our next visit.

3 minute walk to the harbour and a 10 minute walk to the nearest beach. Other beaches around the island can be accessed by using the local buses which run regularly, or by scooter or taxi, all of which are inexpensive. Lunch is served under the trees in summer on Neorio beach and there is a small cafe on Monestraki beach. Water sports are available on some of the beaches.


Poros is 1 hour from Pireaus port by hydrofoil and 2 1/2 hours by ferry; take a taxi or the express bus (X96) from the airport. The bus takes about an hour to the port. By car, it takes 2 1/2 hours going through Korinth and around the Saronic Gulf to Galatas. Rental cars are available at the airport. It is a beautiful drive through the mountains along the coast and a short 10 minute local car ferry ride across to the island. A car is not essential on the island as the public transport is good and everything is accessible by walking, using a scooter or a pedal bike.


Poros town's harbour is full of sailing and motor yachts. There is a classic boat show in June and an around-the-island yacht race in October. Poseidon's Temple and the Museum of Archaeological Artifacts are worth a visit. Many of the antiquities of the Peloponnese are easily accessible by car from Galatas, the town on the mainland, opposite Poros. Epidavrous, Mycene and the architecturally interesting Venetian town of Nafplion are all 1 to 1 1/2 hours by car. Concerts are held at Epidavrous in the summer .

Further Details:

Just below the house on the waterfront, about 3 minutes walk, there is a small supermarket and a good butcher; both carry fresh bread daily. Most of the other shops and the banks are along the waterfront going left from below the house. Scattered among them are the many cafes and tavernas that are so important to Greek life. There are plenty of benches and cafes along the waterfront from which one can bpeople and boat watch.

Turning right from below the house takes you across the small canal that joins the two islands and onto the larger main island. This is where the beaches, the Temple of Poseidon and the pine forests are located.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is normally Saturday but we are flexible. Alternative arrangements can be made when booking. Please arrive after 4 pm and depart by 10 am so that we can clean for the next guests. Returning guests receive a 10% discount. A booking of longer than 2 weeks receives a 10% discount.

Notes on prices:
Prices are for the property per week in sterling but we are happy to quote in euros. Please e-mail or telephone for a quote.
Please note that though prices are quoted Saturday to Friday, departure on the Saturday is included.
Discounts are available for bookings longer than 2 weeks out of high season.

A 30% deposit is required within 7 days of booking and the balance is due 6 weeks before the arrival date. If the booking is made under the 6 week window payment in full is required. Payment for any additional service, pre-arrival shopping, extra linens etc may be made directly to the housekeeper.
