About Elsmore

We (Brenda and Jeff) have lived in Staunton for over 30 years. In 2012 we took the opportunity to buy Steep Meadow as our retirement retreat (stunning panoramic views and a very comfortable home). However feeling too young to retire (young at heart!) we decided to rent the property as a holiday let and stay in our current home.

In Spring 2013 we refurbished the property to a high standard: comfy beds, crisp bedding, soft fluffy towels, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean.

We believe that Staunton is the most stunning village in the Forest of Dean, friendly, welcoming and natural. It is important to us that you enjoy your stay, if you have any requirements please contact us as we live in the village. Equally you may prefer to retreat to the privacy and beauty of Steep Meadow.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Without a doubt, this house has the best panoramic view of any house we have ever seen! Really words cannot express how beautiful the outlook over the village, forest, & fields is. The house itself is wonderful too - modern, spotless, & very cosy. So many lovely & thoughtful touches - very well equipped kitchen, comfy sofas & beds; lovely linens; big fluffy towels; games for the kids, maps & brochures, idyllic patio, BBQ & table, & absolutely delicious sponge cake!"

July 2013, Cumbria

"Fantastic luxury home which is well equipped. Magnificent views in a peaceful and tranquil setting. Great walks and cycle rides on the door step with an abundance of wildlife to see and hear. This is our second visit to the FOD and we much prefer this area, easy reach of forest activities and quaint Monmouth. We only ate out once as the Aga was a dream to cook on. Our 8 year old loved playing in the paddock and the playroom, and especially enjoyed the visits by 'Socks' the dog."

Lovely stay in a beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

This property is really nicely laid out for a family holiday. The lounge/diner is perfect with floor to ceiling windows. The Aga in the kitchen is always on, which can make things a bit hot, but a fireguard is provided to keep little fingers safe! The bedrooms are downstairs, really generously proportioned - we actually put the travel cot in the en-suite, kept it dark for baby to sleep! The landlords baked a beautiful cake for our arrival. There are loads of little and longer walks right from the door of the property and lots of open space to explore. Perfect for a family get-away or a group meet up. The games room in the roof is a total bonus -seperate living areas if you need to escape!

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others.

Lovely house, great surroundings

  • 5 of 5

The house is stunning, with fantastic views, had everything we needed. We had 4 adults, an 11yr old, an 8 yr old and an 18 month old, it was great to be able to set off from the house on the bikes, found a great little route for the kids and the dads found great trails further into the woods. A short drive to Symonds Yat for walks too.

Stunning & beautiful

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely cottage with stunning views in a beautiful part of the country. It's contemporary & quite luxurious. We had never visited the Forest of Dean before but we will again. Down by the river it's like being in the Dordogne. Our favourite place was Symonds Yat where we did kayaking & canoeing. I would highly recommend the whole experience....the cottage & it's location.

A car is recommended as public transport is poor. Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham airports are approximately 1 hour, Heathrow is approximately 2 hours.

Monmouth and Coleford are both within 10 minutes drive and have local amenities and supermarkets.

Further Details:

Steep Meadow is within the boundary of Staunton Parish common, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The common is undergoing a re-generating scheme and has wild Exmoor ponies grazing to revitalize the pasture.

There are walks straight from door through the forest and to the Wye Valley Walk, Wysis Way and Offa's Dyke Path. Bird watching on the meend with its wildlife - deer, foxes, wild boar. Nearby canoeing, Go Ape!, golf, fishing, cycle trails and horse riding. There are also many local Golf Courses including Rolls of Monmouth and Celtic Manor, home to the 2010 Ryder Cup.
