About Jania Marzec
Ca La Mercè is privately owned by a local Catalan/English family. Should you wish to ask any questions about the property or the area please feel free to contact me by telephone or e-mail. Alternatively I can arrange to give you a call in the evening at an agreed time. I live in the property in the winter months and my aim is to make it as comfortable as possible for guests in the summer. I'm always happy to provide any information or assistance during your stay to allow you to to enjoy this beautiful area to the full and hopefully take away some wonderful memories.
Why Jania Marzec chose Mont-ras
The land Ca La Mercè stands on has been in my family for many generations. They built their family home here because they loved the view, across olive groves, fields and woodland to the coastal hills and sea at Castell beach and El Crit, a rocky cove where the family kept their fishing boat. Ca La Mercè is a traditional Catalan family house which has been fully refurbished to a high standard.
What makes this Villa unique
Ca La Mercè is welcoming & comfortable, well-equipped & attractively decorated & furnished. The rustic style furniture includes hand painted pieces by Empordà artist Josep Martinell & there are several artworks by Granada artist Angel Campinya. The outdoor areas combine privacy with an open aspect & the pool is conveniently situated & well integrated into the garden & terraces. The annex where the owner stays in the summer is completely independent so guests can enjoy their privacy & have exclusive use of this lovely, well-maintained house & grounds while having the option of on-call assistance if required. Babysitting, bike hire, additional cleaning, shopping & cooking can be arranged on request. This was our second visit to this villa as we loved our time there the first time and weren't disappointed! The villa is charming and immaculately maintained, along with the pool and lovely garden. There are so many lovely places to visit nearby! We plan to return again.
Perfect in every way
From first booking to final departure, Jania was the perfect host. Nothing was too much trouble, and she remained available throughout our stay to give advice on the local area if needed, including “insider” tips on local beaches, and the best way for us to make the trip to Barcelona for a day. Communication was excellent throughout.
The villa is simply perfect. Spotlessly clean, well appointed, and with everything provided to make our stay there relaxing and trouble free. The views from the terrace and pool area across to the Med are stunning - I can honestly say the pictures perhaps don’t do this wonderful property justice.
The outside space is perfect to enjoy lazy days and evenings, and the inside clean, spacious and comfortable. We are very particular about where we spend our holidays and could not find any fault anywhere.
With regard to location, the villa is five minutes’ drive from a good range of local supermarkets, and only ten from the lovely seaside resort of Llafranc with its pretty promenade and fine range of restaurants where you can enjoy al fresco dining.
There is so much to see and do here that two weeks are not enough. Our favourites included;
Begur - a lovely hilltop town.
Pals and Peratallada - medieval villages where you can enjoy exploring the cobbled streets, shops and restaurants.
Beaches - too many to mention, but Castell and Aiguablava were two favourites. Be sure to arrive early as most beaches get busy and parking near some of the coves appears quite limited.
The water park at Platja d’Aro - Aquadiver - a great place to have some family fun.
Girona - a lovely town about 45 minutes by car. Again, lots of shops, bars, restaurants and places to explore.
As a family we try to visit different places on holiday, only returning to old haunts if they tick all the boxes. The Costa Brava in general, and Ca La Mercè in particular, are both firmly on our list of places to return to.
Thank you, Jania, for a memorable holiday.
Fantastic family trip, exceeded expectations!
A fabulous stay! Everything we could possibly need as a family was available in the villa (check out the listing/ booking info as it's VERY accurate). Jania has thought of everything you would need. Good location for supermarkets too, 5 min drive. We went to the beach at Callella which was beautiful but, to be honest, the pool was too tempting to leave and garden very beautiful we only went out 2 days. Very peaceful area. Jania close by but left us to it. Communications before, during and for check out were brilliant and all very clear and helpful. Would highly recommend.
This villa is beautiful, spacious, very well-equipped with amazing views over wooded hills to the coast, just visible in the dip of the hills. Jania is a perfect hostess in every way, especially in the generous provisions there on arrival and her desire to make the holiday the best it can be. There are some lovely places to visit and we look forward to returning to this beautiful area of Spain.
We loved it.
We spent two weeks across the end of September and beginning of October. Our time was evenly divided with days in just lounging outside with a book and a cold beer/wine or venturing out on day trips to see and experience some of the many wonderful places in the surrounding area.
The villa is spacious, beautifully decorated with a well stocked kitchen. Rooms are clean, comfortable and well furnished. The outside area has multiple options for relaxing whether poolside, the covered patio or the large terrace. The garden and pool are well tended and regularly maintained.
Jania is an excellent hostess who manages the property brilliantly. She is always happy to provide advice and guidance on all things local. Although she lives in the adjacent property, she is discreet and unobtrusive.
Ca La Merce is very close to the rugged wild coast of Spain's Costa Brava which is dotted with pretty little beach resorts. Inland and along the cost, there are plenty of attractions, towns and villages well worth a visit within relatively easy reach. The wonderful gardens at Cap Roig are very close and we loved wandering about Girona's old quarter.
Eating and drinking - there is just so much choice. If feeding yourself, fresh fruit and vegetables are plentiful and available from the daily market in nearby Palfrugell as well as the various supermarkets. Jania's uncle sometimes provides tasty peppers, tomatoes, courgettes, onions, beans and aubergines from his allotment. If eating out, there is a huge number and choice of options whether tapas or amazing variety of seafood. The wines of the local Emporda region are a hidden gem and of course Catalunya is well known for Cava.
When arriving at a holiday rental property the hope is always that the property description on the rental site reasonably matches the reality. Alison and I have rented numerous holiday properties across France and Italy. Ca La Merce did not disappoint in any way.
There are many beautiful beaches & coves within a few minutes of the villa. The sandy virgin beach of Castell (5 km), just north of Palamós, lies within a protected nature reserve. The lovely coastal villages of Llafranc (5 km), Calella de Palafrugell (4.7 km), Tamariu (6 km), Fornells (9.5 km), Sa Riera (11 km) Sa Tuna (13 km) have sandy beaches & rocky inlets. The renowned beauty spot of Aiguablava is a 20 minute drive away. La Fosca and Palamós (7 km) have long sandy beaches.
Nearest airport is Girona (Ryanair) and is approx 45 minutes drive away (47 km). Barcelona airport (Ryanair, Easyjet etc) (133 km) and Perpignan airport (Ryanair from Stanstead and Bristol) (115 km) are within 2 hours’ drive. For those who prefer to drive, Catalunya is easily accessible by road.
Nearest beach-side dining: Llafranc (5km), Calella de Palafrugell 4,7km. Palafrugell (daily fruit & veg market, colourful Sunday market) 2 km. Begur (stylish medieval town, chic shops, tapas bars & restaurants) 9 km. Figueras (Dalí museum) 50 km. Pals (delightful medieval village) 9 km. Girona (historic cathedral town, wonderful medieval quarter, fine restaurants, excellent shopping) 50 km. Palamós (fishing harbor & fish market, tapas bars, some of the best fish restaurants in the area) 7 km.
Catalunya is an ideal holiday destination, offering something for everyone: sporting and cultural activities, fascinating places to visit, excellent restaurants, beautiful scenery and beaches, all very accessible from Ca La Mercè
WALKING & CYCLING
The area is a walkers’ paradise and the villa is located near one of many signposted walks. Choose from the Gavarres hills, the Empordá plain and coastal walks. Information and walking maps are supplied for guests at the property. The area is also excellent for cycling and mountain biking. Castell beach can be reached by the new “Green Way” for walkers and cyclists. Cycle hire can be arranged by the house-manager
WATER SPORTS, TENNIS & PADDLE
Water sports are well catered for on the nearby beaches including sea kayaks, sailing, scuba diving and motor boat hire. There are many rocky inlets and coves that are excellent for snorkelling. Tennis and paddle can also be played locally (3 km)
PLACES OF INTEREST INLAND
The Baix Empordà plains are home to the beautiful medieval stone villages of Ullastret, Cruïlles, Torrent, Palau Sator, Peratallada, Pals and Fonteta. The Empordà is also known as Dali’s “Golden triangle” as three of his most important museums are located here: Dalí Musuem Figueras (51 km); Gala’s Castle Museum Púbol (21 km); Dalí House and Museum Cadaqués (advance booking recommended) (72 km). The centre of the local ceramics trade is in La Bisbal (12 km) which also has a lively market.
EVENTS OF INTEREST ON THE COAST
The pretty white-washed fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell plays host to the festival of “havaneras” or sea shanties, in the early summer, and to the Music Festival of Cap Roig in July and August. The Festival is set in the botanic gardens overlooking the sea - an opportunity to hear world class singers in a beautiful outdoor setting. Palamós fish market is worth visiting.
