Apartment in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England - Peaceful location overlooking the comings and goings of the High Street

Mariners Loft is a modern apartment on two floors, part of the conversion of a former Mariner's Store. There is a small balcony at the back overlooking a tiered garden and excellent views of the High Street from a window seat at the front. All shops, restaurants and cafes are within easy walking distance. Aldeburgh has two good independent book shops and a thriving independent cinema. Local fishermen sell their freshly caught and locally-smoked fish from stalls on the beach. Aldeburgh is a good base from which to explore this part of Suffolk. We provide maps and details of walks both starting from the town or a short drive away. Aldeburgh has inspired many authors, poets and musicians, most notably Benjamin Britten. The annual Aldeburgh Music Festival which he co-founded in 1947 attracts visitors from all over the world. The August carnival is a big draw, as is September's annual Food & Drink Festival.

About Caroline

We (Richard and Caroline) live in Lewes, Sussex and have been visiting the coastal areas of Suffolk on and off since our children were little. Our first stay in Suffolk was Iken where we were captivated by the views, atmospheric and unspoilt landscape as well as proximity to Minsmere and the musical events at Snape.

When possible we shall also be booking in breaks for ourselves at Mariner's Loft, enjoying walking and exploring more of Suffolk. We very much hope that you will feel as 'at home' there as we do.

Why Caroline chose Suffolk

We stayed at Mariner's Loft on 3 occasions and felt really comfortable there. On trying to book a 4th stay (November 2012) we were taken aback to find that the apartment was for sale. Readers - we bought it! The previous owner was nothing but helpful and efficient and we hope to follow in her footsteps.

We are currently making some minor changes only, but welcome your comments /suggestions.

Notes on accommodation: Mariner's Loft is non-smoking accommodation. Pets are not accepted. Outside: Small patio with table and chairs overlooking a peaceful tiered garden. The garden does not belong to our property but there is access through the garden, with light sensors for the evenings. Steps lead to The Terrace at the top which has free parking. Parking at the front of the building is free for 2 hours only between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. Utility Room: There is a washing machine in the utility cupboard in the bathroom. A vacuum cleaner, iron / board and cleaning tools are also provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels / tea towels and linen for use in the flat are provided. Please provide your own beach towels.

A great stay in the historic seaside town of Aldeburgh. Conveniently next to the supermarket and surrounded by pubs and restaurants and only 2 mins walk from the sea! The flat is spacious, well equipped and there is lots do in the area. I recommend it whole heartedly.

Lovely light flat in great location

We have enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing extension to our New Year break at the Mariner's Loft with our 2 children aged 4 and 6. The property is in the middle of the High Street, so less than 30 seconds from the beach, it is well equipped and deceptively spacious. A great property Winter or Summer we would imagine. Great flexibility regarding check out too as we stayed during January, this was very well received, thank you.

Really Lovely

Superb apartment right on the High Street. Very well equipped with quality furnishings, etc and immaculately clean. Lots of information on the area in the apartment and was great to see lots of books, games, dvds to use. Cannot fault a single thing and we won't hesitate to visit again. A perfect stay and we loved it.

Great end to our summer

This was our second stay here, and it was even better than we remembered it to be. Very comfortable. The location is ideal for giving pre-teens/teens the freedom to explore the town by themselves. Being able to pop out for morning coffee/croissants etc. is such a lovely way to start the day - makes me wish I lived in the centre of a town! Great location for exploring the sandy beaches of Southwold (can recommend the new Sail Loft, Gun Hill, Southwold), crabbing in Walberswick, boating in Thorpeness and of course for Aldeburgh itself.

Perfect flat in Aldeburgh

Mariner's Loft ticks all the boxes for a perfect place to stay in Aldeburgh - well equipped, well designed and ideally located right on the High Street, minutes from the beach and all the High Street essentials, from coffee to fish 'n' chips and everything in between. We know Aldeburgh well having stayed in the town with relatives for years, and this was the perfect place to stay on our own (two adults, two children, 7 & 9) for a big family event. Thank you!

Autumn break

Absolutely lovely apartment. I spent an incredibly relaxing few days in Aldeburgh. The property is perfectly positioned in the High Street and is just like home from home. Perfect to come home to after an enjoyable day walking on the Suffolk coast. I cannot suggest any improvements.

Mariner's Loft is a short walk (5 minutes) from Aldeburgh beach. The beach is predominantly pebbly. A walk along the beach to Thorpeness will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour, passing the fishermen's huts on Aldeburgh seafront and Maggi Hambling's Scallop sculpture dedicated to Benjamin Britten.

You could walk there or back along the old railway track. We provide maps and guides.


The nearest railway station is Saxmundham. There is an hourly bus service from Saxmundham to Aldeburgh (xx:23) until 19:20 but sadly this does not co-incide with the arrival of trains from London, which arrive at xx:40. There are however local taxi firms. Taxi fare from Saxmundham to Aldeburgh for 2-4 people: £11.00. Can be booked in advance from, e.g., Swift's on 01728 602986.

Minsmere, 8.5 miles, 20 minutes

Snape, 6 miles, 10 - 12 minutes

There are two Co-op stores (one is next door but two, next to the Post Office, and the other, slightly larger about 3/4 mile / 15 minutes walk).

In addition to the fish sellers on the seafront there is a fishmongers / organic greengrocers with an attached cafe. Lawson's Delicatessen is opposite Mariner's Loft, providing home cooked food from local ingredients.

Aldeburgh has seven cafés / restaurants, all but but Prezzo being independent, plus take-aways and (of course) Aldeburgh Fish & Chips (2 shops).

Aldeburgh has numerous opportunities for coffee but, so far, no national chains.

There is a thriving Cinema with comfortable seating and a new digital projector.

Contact Caroline or Richard by phone or email. We will send you a booking form, to be returned within 7 days together with a 20% deposit. We also ask for a deposit of £100 which we will hold against breakages.

Full payment is required 28 days before your arrival date.

Changeover Day:
Change-over day is Saturday. Arrival 16:00, departure 10:00. There may be some flexibility regarding changeover day and length of stay out of season.

Notes on prices:
Prices are for the property per week, in GB Pounds and for 4 people maximum.
Bookings of less than a whole week are priced differently, and we will be pleased to provide prices on request.
Where bookings of less than a full week are accepted we charge £90 per night for two nights and £80 per night for 3 - 5 nights. Six nights are charged at the full weekly rate.

Owners Direct will levy an additional charge which is payable directly to them.
We do not accept bookings for one night only.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

100% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
