About Renate Huckle
After many years of being a GP in South Devon, where we enjoyed boat building, sailing, renovating houses and where our 4 children were born, we decided to move to the countryside to live a different life and try farming. After much searching we found the perfect place, unspoilt and secluded Bradford Barton in the middle of Devon, on the Two Moors Way between Exmoor and Dartmoor with a large enough farm house for all of us and many substantial, interesting barns in quite good condition.
Renate Huckle purchased this Cottage in 1991
Why Renate Huckle chose Witheridge
The farm consists of 150 acres of lovely meadows surrounded by high hedges, ideal for any wildlife. After a lot of work on the farm house and the cottage we are very lucky to live here and now manage 3 productive apple orchards which supply our 250 year old cider press for apple juice and cider making in October/November each year. We have 3 old decidious woodlands as well as a beautiful 10 acre arboretum with 330 specimen trees, some on red list and a recently planted 10 acre grove of 350 Giant Redwoods (Sequoia dendrum Gigantium). The best tree for carbon capture over the whle its 3000 year lifespan.
What makes this Cottage unique
At the moment we keep a flock of pure bred Poll Dorset sheep as well as completely free range chickens, ducks and geese. There are 3 ponds and our visitors have total freedom to explore the farm and the farm buildings, the orchards and the tree plantations. At lambing time we are happy to let them experience this amazing time (bottle feeding the lanbs etc.) and in the autumn they are welcome to help, if they wish, with the apple harvest and the pressing. Should anyone really wish to help out with any other jobs around the farm, they are always welcome, yet this is definitely not expected.

Wonderful house in a perfect location
This was my second stay at Pond Cottage, the house is lovely as are Renate and John. We hope to visit again next year!
It was a pleasure to have you and your family in the cottage again.
We also hope to see you again next year.
Lovely property in a lovely location hosted by a lovely couple.
We had a lovely time staying at Pond Cottage. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the countryside.
Not a five star property
I wasn't going to review this property as I didn't want to spoil the record of five stars.
As I have now been asked twice to review this, I will. I don't know what happened on Saturday 1st September but the cottage did not appear to have been cleaned out properly before we arrived. This is what we found on arrival. Dirty windows, dirty bathroom mirrors and inside bathroom cabinets.
Some chipped crockery, dirty tin opener that didn't work..Only 2 decent glass tumblers,
An old 2 slice toaster still covered in breadcrumbs left from the previous guests.(we were a party of 4). Even though this cottage had all the amenities listed in the brochure
it is very disappointing to find this in what is listed as a five star property. Also, the bedding was not up to 5 star standard e.g white cotton as we have always had in other 5 star properties. No way could I call this a luxurious five star cottage. I can't comment about the owners. We did meet a pleasant gentleman on arrival but I never met the lady to speak to.
I am so sorry to read that you found quite a few things that were not up to your standard. I was very disappointed and like to let you know that all the issues you mentioned have since been addressed and rectified.
With kind regards,
Fantastic cottage in outstanding location .an
We had a wonderful time at the lovely Pond Cottage. Very peaceful and quiet with very friendly owners.
The pool and the farm itself were a joy to use and walk around .
Good base to explore Devon.
Thank you for letting us stay. We certainly wish to return in the future.
We are a family of four with daughters ages 14 and 11. We stayed at Pond cottage for 3 nights at the end of May 2018. On arrival we were warmly greeted by John and shown around the property and farm. This is a beautiful part of the world and the farm and cottage are as picturesque as you could imagine. The ducks, chickens and lambs were a highlight for the girls and we were able to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The cottage has everything you need to self cater and there are some lovely pubs nearby. Renate was very kind and provided some fresh eggs and homemade jam on arrival! a lovely treat x
We still managed to sight see during our stay and travelled to both Sidmouth and Hartland which we did with ease.
Pond cottage is a central base in the heart of Devon - perfect for a break for anyone !
A perfect setting for a relaxing break
We cannot speak highly enough of this charming and idyllic little cottage, set in truly beautiful countryside. Everything about Pond cottage is perfect. Renate and John are so friendly and were only to happy to share their beautiful farm and well cared for animals with us .The ducks, geese and lambs are delightful and really kept us amused with their antics ! The cottage and garden are pristine and have everything that you could wish for, and the added personal touch of fresh flowers, eggs and homemade jam really were the icing on the cake! Thank you Renate and John for a lovely relaxing break, we hope to be back very soon

Tiverton is a historic market town occupied by the Romans who used it as a base for their activities in the West country.
The local museum provides an interesting insight into this aspect of the town's history. Visit the castle with its famous tapestry hangings and the pannier market held Fridays and Saturdays. There is a newly built leisure centre and a cinema.
The river Exe passes through the town as does the Grand Western canal and horse drawn barge trips take you through the most picturesque countryside. Knightshayes and Killerton House, two National Trust houses with beautiful garden are close by and well worth a visit.
Pond Cottage lies halfway between the villages of Rackenford and Witheridge.
Detailed information on how to get from the A361 to the cottage will be supplied on booking.
The beautiful North Devon beaches are about an hours drive away.
