Period cottage in area of outstanding natural beauty, between Cheddar & Wells

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Country cottage in a peaceful village at the foot of the Mendip Hills. Recently renovated, with pleasant gardens and play area.

Jessie’s Cottage is the end property of a traditional period Somerset long house. Recently refurbished, but retaining the original character. Sleeps 4-5 in 2 bedrooms. Positioned in the peaceful village of Rodney Stoke at the foot of the Mendip Hills, convenient for Cheddar (3 miles) and the beautiful cathedral city of Wells (4 miles). The closest large cities are Bristol and Bath, less than 1 hour’s drive across the Mendips. The village of Rodney Stoke has remained little changed over the years. The church is 11th Century and well supported, as is the local pub, both within easy walking distance from the cottage. The area is popular with walkers and cyclists. The Mendip Way passes close by. There are many other designated walks over the Mendips and south to Glastonbury and the Somerset Levels.

About Derek Paget

My wife and I have owned property in the Cheddar area for many years. We have recently sold our interiors business, but are still involved in design projects. We have indulged and spared no expense on this project and the result is stunning.

We have been involved in letting holiday properties for many years. We go

to great lengths to provide friendly customer care and ensure that our guests are greeted by a high standard of accommodation.

Why Derek Paget chose Glastonbury & Mendip Area

Jessie’s Cottage is positioned at the foot of the Mendip Hills, in the midst of beautiful countryside. There are lovely walks and a local pub very close by. The accommodation has recently been totally refurbished to a very high standard, incorporating the most modern appliances, within a cosy character cottage. You can enjoy log fires, fabulous walks and friendly village life. The property has excellent road transport links and is convenient for Cheddar Caves and Gorge, as well as the ancient market City of Wells.

What makes this cottage unique

Experience one of the most beautiful areas of rural Britain. Central to the Mendip hills, and, a little further away, the Quantocks and Exmoor.

Wells is on our doorstep, and Bristol and Bath less than an hour's drive away, as is the south coast, and the Severn estuary.

Walk drive swim, or explore underground in one of the many caves in the area. The choice is yours.

Derek and Irene provide a beautiful English cottage with the most beautiful gardens. My family and i had a wonderful time here. So clean and beautifully decorated. The beds are to die for so comfy. they provided a travel cot. even milk and wine for us on arrival and not forgetting the tea bags. I would recommend this cottage to anyone. Parking provided just be careful coming out as near a bend. A great holiday and so much to do in the surrounding area's.

super clean and lovely hosts

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 5 (10yrs, 8 yrs and 5mths) enjoyed a weekend stay at Jessie's cottage, using it as a convenient base from which to explore Somerset (Bath, Cheddar gorge, Wells Cathedral, Bruton). Hosts Derek and Irene were lovely to deal with, replying to emails super quick and with helpful instructions. They had even bought us some milk for our late arrival in case we needed it and tried to make restaurant bookings knowing places would be full due to the busy long weekend. They also supplied us with a cot for our 5mth old which was super helpful.

The cottage has everything we needed for our stay and we cooked up a big Sunday morning breakfast in the well stocked kitchen. Great fluffy big towels in the bathroom, nice big walk in shower. All very newly renovated and everything super clean.

The area is well-known for its spectacular caves. Wookey Hole caves, about 2 miles away, is open to the public all year around, as is Gough’s Cave at Cheddar Gorge.

Somerset sandy beaches at Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-Super-Mare are both at a distance of approximately 12 miles. The beautiful landscape of Exmoor and its seaside resort of Minehead is about an hour’s drive. The south coast, with Lyme Regis being the closest, takes about one and a half hours to reach.

Bristol Airport, with frequent flights to most destinations, is 8 miles away. Castle Cary and Weston–Super-Mare train stations are both 30 minutes’ drive. There is also a local taxi service operating from Rodney Stoke.

Wookey Hole Caves: 2 miles

Cheddar: 3 miles

Wells: 4 miles

Glastonbury: 12 miles

Weston Super Mare: 12 Miles

Bath: 18 miles

Bristol: 18 miles

Further Details:

Local footpaths and beautiful countryside walks up on to the Mendips are within a few minutes of the cottage.

There are many local tourist attractions close by including Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole Caves, Wells Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace and Glastonbury Tor and Abbey.

There are two golf courses nearby, Wells and Mendip, both a short drive away.

There are swimming pools / leisure centres at both Cheddar and Wells.

There are many lovely restaurants and traditional pubs in the area. The closest pub is the Rodney Stoke Inn (5 mins walk), which does very good food (booking advised). A local food directory is provided in the cottage.

Great shopping facilities are located at Wells, Street (Clarke’s Retail Village) and a bit further away at Bath and Bristol. Glastonbury, with its ancient links to King Arthur and the Avalon legends, has many interesting New Age shops.
